I agree that Call My Name should have been the single released for R&B audience. That point I agree with you on. Of course I don't think there's anything wrong with religious beliefs. It's just that if you're going to talk about your beliefs in your songs n' things, at least stay true to the calling, one; and two, don't force your beliefs on anyone else; and three, you know that there will be some moments when things will happen that go against your beliefs...so realize that the world doesn't revolve around you and your beliefs...

Ok...i agree, but when you are faced with a situation that calls for you to choose to follow your beliefs, you have to, even tho others may not understand.
As far as staying true to your beliefs, I'm with that too...but I have never met one who could do so perfectly. So if he (or you or I for that matter) fail to live up to what others expect of us at all times, then we should give him benefit of the doubt.

When Prince released prince or The Rainbow Children or Rave, did you see him on the cover of Entertainment Weekly or in a featured article in Newsweek or Time? Some of those magazines didn't even review his last few albums. I think his career is far from over. People other than us - his hardcore lifelong fan base, are actually paying attention this time.

i think you've missed one of laylow's more valid points. the media coverage / reviews is down to Sony using it's in hour publicists / promotions departments and putting the heat on. all rock critics / magazine editors have been aware of prince releasing records through the internet for the past few years. they all know his site (npgmusc.com). they don't actually care any more than they did before. they're just doing what sony are asking. so i wouldn't judge princes' career status on the column inches he's getting. look at the units sold. that's what makes a career. sadly.

Yes, the Sony publicist put guns to the heads of the music critics to make them write good things about the record.

The Sony people also forced thousands to pay $15.00 to watch the concert in the theathers.
Did you know they forced the radio stations to play Musicology and forced the concerts to sell-out.

Prince has turned his carreer around and I think Musicology is just the begining of a whole new
era. Save your chicken little crap for another board.

I should reiterate that when I say his "career" is over, I mean *commercially*. Sure, he'll still play and record music. I'm not stupid and I do have faith in him as a musician, just not in his quest for commercial success...

Well maybe with all the rounds he's making at the moment that will change. I would like it to happen for him if that's what he wants. But what has made me proud for him to start is him getting inducted into the RRHOF. I was so proud of him I wanted to cry. As a fan I want him to keep playing by his own rules because it has been working for him so far and has kept him out of trouble as well. Sometimes commercial is good and sometimes it's not. If it ain't broke don't fix it. I keep bringing up the MJ thing because if I was P I would be feeling good about myself right about now. Let's be glad he hasn't gotten to that, not saying it can't happen to him, but so far, it hasn't and it doesn't look like it. When that happens he would probably never gain commercial or any type of success whatsoever. I don't believe Michael will.

I will admit:

I'll be afraid to admit that Prince's career is over...

...when it IS over...

...which is no time soon. Heck, even after he DIES, his career won't be over. If Tupac can keep it going, don't you think a man with the most famous vault of music in recorded HISTORY can't.

Yeah...that will be a sad day and I'll be afraid to admit it. I'm just glad I don't even have to think about that right now!

What's up in DC though? "Musicology" is bumping in Detroit! All over the airways! The single and "Call My Name". The radio stations are giving away tickets to see him everywhere, Detroit, Vegas, the Essence show! We can't get enough!! It's a damn good time to be a Prince fan in Detroit!!

You know shit head. I actually understand how publicity works. I said a year ago all Prince had to do was put out a radio friendly record and hire a publicst and he would be in money.

You can send out all the free copies you want to reviewers, buy add time, and pay radio stations if you want to. If the public does not like what you are doing they just will not buy it.

Time and time again we have watched the record industry machine hype up a upcoming star and then watched the star disappear from the face of the earth. Due to the fact that they did
not have any talent or any ability to hold the attention of the public.

I know that Prince has talent and he definitly has the ablitiy to hold the attention of the public. This guy has managed to survive in the industry for 25 years he did not make it that far on hype and publicty along.

Now shut the fuck up and drink some more haterade because I know that you and the rest of the nut ball haters on this board will still be crying about how much Prince sucks this time next year.

I can't think of any music artist who has stayed consistently commercially viable and artistically cutting all through their career - there is always ups and downs.

Add to that that there is always a creative/commercial peak, and after the there are smaller peaks and troughs - but rarely anything that matches the past successes.

My opinion is that Prince is past his creative peak, but since he's such a great live act, and a great musician, and seems to shit out songs like the rest of us breathe air - his career I don't think is ever going to be over.

Are there any pop artists who have been around over 25 years making ground breaking records any more? I don't know of any.

It's a natural cycle.

Thats just stupid to say until the album is released. This tour is not being advertised as the last time he plays hits. Prince always played hits live. People would come if they could get in to a Prince concert. He has not played venues big enough to accomodate the crowd that he never stopped drawing.

It really doesn't matter that he's a genius and has composed some of the greatest music of our time. Very few people take his music seriously and don't really see Prince as an enduring figure in music.

Are we afraid to admit that these critics could be right??

1. First, the tour is doing well...however, I believe that it's doing well on account of the hits being played "for the final time."

2. Musicology is good, just not great. And maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think it'll do much on the charts or sales-wise.

3. Honestly, I'm not sure if the conversion to JW and all the recent self-righteous behavior is helping him at all. I for one am starting to tire of his prostelyzing, yet double-mindedness (e.g., walking out of "Jersey Girl" due to the cursing; however, listening to Janet's new album, which has cursing, sexual innuendo throughout).

4. Finally, the only reason why critics seem to be giving P the time of day is because it's what's in and Sony's really trying to promote the album. Sure there will be buzz surrounding the debut, but it'll all die out a few weeks after the album drops. I think releasing "Musicology" as the first single was a HUGE mistake...one that P and Sony execs will come to regret.

Perhaps I'm wrong and need to have a little more faith, but I am beginning to accept [and agree with the UK standard article] that the only influence P will have on the industry is inspiring the younger generation to produce music. This is not necessarily a BAD thing, I just think that P's career has changed to the point that he won't have much commercial impact on the industry. That's my opinion and my take on the situation.

Any thoughts?

Prince's career will be over when he quits completely. He can release music until he dies, regardless of the quality.

Word. lol nod
I agree with you because like you said Prince's career will never be over. He has written so many songs that he still has millions of them to release. Why waste them? He's worked to hard and i believe that it is way far from over, in away it's starting over. And like EvilWhiteMale ( eek ) said.. Prince can release music until the very day he dies. He has so much music that no one has heard before, why would he just give it all up and never release them. The only way Prince's career could stop is when he quits for good, and trust me folks..that may take a while. Prince has been writting every since the beginning. Before "For you" came out, Prince was writting. Over the years he has continued to write to create more and more albums. The songs that he has collected from the last, what 25 years.. could last him 25 more years!! We don't know if Prince's career is over, yet. When Prince stops making and coming out with albums, people stop buying them, and Prince stops writing, that's when it's over. It's not over until Prince stops writing, singing, producing, arranging, and all the other stuff he does. It's not over until Prince stops with the albums

Any Thoughts???

Yeah this is probably the worst topic in months! Just plain dumb eek lol But hey thats "The Org" lets all pretend we are Prince's Manager & tell us what you would do different lol lol lol

But Over??

The Guy is selling out 6 LA Arena Shows, 5 NYC Arena Shows, etc. He is on Award Shows, Magazine Covers.

As for Playing Songs "the final time", Who Cares he can do another 20,000 seat arena tour with all new/different past hits and play those for the "final time" & then a year after that do it again & then again cool

I think the last guy who has to worried about being Over is Prince! He has a loyal fan base of 120,000 people that bring him in $2 Million per project.

No, it just seems to me it's just taking on a new direction. Obviously the music industry has been paying him close attention, even when the mainstream media wasn't. N.E.W.S. getting nominated for a Grammy when he's not on the charts (or radar according to some), says a lot about what "the powers that be" really think about P, I would say they are impress with where he is musically, now suddenly the media is kissing a** all over the place (it ain't that performance with Beyonce). Whether Musicology makes a groundbreaking splash on the charts doesn't matter, though it's presence will definitely be felt; for now it seems like a prelude of what is coming up next, and we all know it's coming. Since, P is not a product of the microwave generation, instant gratification or bust idealism, I think we should reserve judgement until we see what's happening with this new turn of events, because during the TRC year did anyone, including his biggest fans, see what's happening now coming, I know I didn't, but he was still selling out venues with no special tv appearances, the Kodak Theatre ain't no piano lounge (2x). Wait, they had the Grammy's there didn't they?
