Graffiti Bridge? By far the worst song in Prince history. Absolutely horrible. Not a track 1(album opener) song. Oops. I get the concept now. http://www.facebook.com/p...111?ref=ts

Rave is a pretty good candidate for worst opening song. I can't really say much about the opener of NPS because, in my opinion, it's the worst piece of trash as a whole that he's ever put out. I can't even say that it's "better than anything else out there" as I do to defend some of his weaker work. That album is a stinker. About as bad-- again, in my opinion-- as NEWS which I couldn't even bring myself to listen to more than twice.
I let my bro-in-law borrow the copy of Musicology that I got at the Cincy show, so I haven't heard it yet. Looking forward to it. It's gotten nothing but good reviews, for what that's worth.

The Rave single started out promising to me and then just got too sparse. It's still okay, but among the weakest of his album openers, imo.

My Name Is Prince. It would be interesting to know what Prince was thinking when he wrote it. I think it would be fair to suggest that he was feeling somewhat insecure as his star began to wane. The suggestion that Prince was angry that hadn't been a hit and wanted Warners to release another album of material perhaps strengthens this view if there is any truth to what I've read.
I find the song whilst OK-ish musically, the vocal delivery and lyrics somewhat embarassing and unecessary. Speaking as a fan, there was and indeed never is no such need for Prince to prove his worth as an artist. I can only imagine listeners who have no interest in Prince would find My Name Is Prince perhaps-pathetic? narcissistic? boring?... All this and no mention of Tony M!

to avoid being negative i'll just say the best opening track is lets go crazy..
may be the best way any album has ever started.

Rainbow Children, no contest.
It goes on forever boringly, stars Darth Vader as lead vocals, and dear God that chorus sounds so piercing my ears start to bleed. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

'North'. Its even more boring than 'The Rainbow Children'.
I've never been too fond of 'Can't Stop This Feeling I've Got' either.

I'd have to go with 'Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic'... it's just not opening number material
(well, not that sparse version anyway). It just doesn't live up to it's title.

I like that track, plus it's a great opener! Man, Rave WISHES it was Thunder!

I think you all should have to include what song you think should have been the opening track as well. I think the worst opening track would be NPS and a better opening song would have been nothing because the only great song on there is The One and that wouldn't have worked. He should have just shelved that whole damn album.

Hmmm...lest favorite opening album track... :hmmm: Minneapolis from 1-800-New-Funk Next to Hollywood by George Clinton sounds like a cat struck by a baseball bat. _________________________________________

I think Come On is good & a better song than people give it credit for, but it still wouldn't have saved the album...

Rave was a HUGE MISSTEP. It should have been on Crystal Ball. Not a bad song, but it wasn't quite ready for the primetime slot it was given. Title song and opening track to the album that was supposed to be his big commercial comeback??? No way.
BUT - Rave is a better song than NPS. Weakest? Rainbow Children. 10 minutes of gibberish.

IIRC, "My Name Is Prince" was a last minute addition to the album. Well, not last minute, as "I Wanna Melt With U" was THE last-minute addition, but that's beside the point. Anyway, MNIP didn't sit well with the band, really, because before that track and IWMWU were added, the album was almost completely a band collaboration, opening with Sexy MF. They weren't real happy that he was adding solo tracks at the last minute, without much involvement from the rest of the group, especially when one of them was a track all about him, and his name in the title. And the lead single for the album (Sexy MF had already come out many months before the album was even ready for release) But hey, he's the one with the contract and paying their salary, so what could they do...
