I kinda see it as a metaphor for Prince coming full circle in his career and going back to the guitar that kind of "made him". Okay, maybe I'm reading too much into it.

whatchoo mean "going back" to it? it's pretty much been in the picture, even when he had the other guitars (habibi, the blue angel, ad nauseam)...it's pretty much been a mainstay geetar ever since 1980.

i love the hohner. Tho i did really love the blue angel's look and always wanted a copy - wasn't prepared to fork out the outrageous sums npg wanted though.
Habibi though? | |

Although I really don't have a preference, the Hohner does sound terrific.

I may be one of the few that actually digs that symbol guitar, but I would be curious to know of any differences in sound quality or tone between the two. For example, does he pull out the hohner for certain songs, say Let's go Crazy, and utilize the symbol guitar for blues tracks?

Rowdy said: I think of all of P's guitars Habibi has the hottest solo tone
nothin fonks harder than the hohner tho.. A generally agree. The Hohner is the bomb for funky rhythm playing. All the guitars have their identities for soloing but he has been using Habibi or one of the other symbol guitars for the "big solo" pieces like PURPLE RAIN and ANNA STESIA for years now. At least whenever I've seen him he has.

i think that the hohner is better for rhythm, but the symbol guitars and that dark blue cloud are great 4 soloing [This message was edited Thu Mar 25 13:49:03 2004 by MashedPotatoKid]

Maaann, Prince's HOHNER TELE IS ROCK n' ROLL, baybee!
You can get that chicken scratch funk, that dirty punk rock feel, those searing leads (ask Harrison's boy), it has the leopard skin pickguard, it doesn't look gawdy, it's quite frankly elegant in its simplicity. It's THE ORIGINAL Prince axe. NEVER to be in the shadow of any second tier Prince geetars. It is The Godfather of all Prince axes. Bow down and kiss its leopard skin pickguard. That's the way it is, was, and shall FOREVER be! Learn it. Live with it. Make it a part of your life. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

It was written that Prince once said this about the Hohner:
"I bought this in 1981, and every time I tell people this they don't believe me, but I only paid $30. for it." I hope not, because if so, he was ROBBED. That guitar is a POS. I never liked Teles (always been partial to Strats), and Prince's Hohner is probably the worst copy I've ever seen. Before I became a Prince fan, one reason I didn't like him was because of that ugly-ass guitar. And when I became a Prince fan, I felt the one drawback was that I thought I'd have to try and like that ugly-ass guitar. That's why it was so disappointing for me to discover, while taping the Hall of Fame ceremony, that he was still playing that ugly-ass guitar. My favorite guitar is the peach cloud. You say the Hohner screams? The SCREAMINEST (that misspelling was intentional) guitar is the CLOUD, with those active pickups (I've heard they were EMGs)!! Prince had his best solo sound when playing that guitar: maniacal, cut-through-diamonds on the high end, vibrate-your-skeleton on the low end, jaw-grinding sound. The Hohner gives him that old, light, antiquated sound from his early albums...not enough punch on the lead. You can get the funk out of both guitars, but you've gotta have the burning LEAD as well. Thank the heavens for the CLOUD! "The Hohner is bad, very bad." Zoot [This message was edited Tue Apr 13 11:45:35 2004 by zootjames] If I come back as a woman, I want a body like yours...

What happened to the Fender Tele I've seen Prince with, was it his ,if so why did he get rid for a cheaper copy, I wonder If he had ever been approached by Fender to perhaps play and endorse there model. I must admit to loving Tele's as I have one but the one P plays tends to clash IMO .Outta his guitars I'd like to have a cloud ,I would be fussed on the colour there all neat looking little things.

That's another of my many complaints about the Hohner. He would've looked so much better with the white cloud as he played with the Traveling Wilburys, for instance. The Hohner clashed badly with this outfit, IMO. Zoot [This message was edited Wed Apr 14 12:09:08 2004 by zootjames] If I come back as a woman, I want a body like yours...

Thanx for sending these pix. I wasn't sure if the Blue Angel was the blue cloud, or that blue guitar that he played in the "America" video. By the way: the blue cloud may be about to overtake the peach as my favorite Prince guitar. Blue is my favorite color anyway, so why not? Not to piss on the dream. but the honer tele isn't as authentic as it appears. P gets the things and has every internal upgraded to the best standard. he keeps the 'tele' sound that drew him to the honer in the first place, but it's not with the same picks, bridge, clamp, electronics, etc.
the guitar still rocks though.

Like any maple-neck tele, the Hohner's a great guitar for funky rythm playing and bluesy, biting leads. For longer, psychedelic solo's a Les Paul style guitar (which in a sense the cloud and habibi are: humbucking pu's, shorter scale length) is more useful. Why he used the tele on WMGGW? Beats me. Maybe he was planning to play a short, sophisticated solo. It sounded cool though.
Annnyyway, if you don't like the Hohner's sound, you'll have a very hard time listening to almost any classic 80's prince recording. Lovesexy/Batman is probably where the other guitars first began taking over...

It might've been the only axe he brought with him for that whole gig (with an alternate in case of an accident, of course). I suppose he also wanted a more vintage sound, which is appropriate, since that's an old song. My problem was seeing the guitar again, especially the way I thought it clashed with what he was wearing. Annnyyway, if you don't like the Hohner's sound, you'll have a very hard time listening to almost any classic 80's prince recording. I was thinking it was Around the World in a Day, or maybe Purple Rain, which is when he started with the cloud. As I recall, the Hohner was basically a memory by Sign o' the Times, which is when you pretty much saw him with the peach cloud exclusively. As for having a hard time with the classic 80s albums (Contro, 1999, Purple Rain), I don't, because obviously the music's about more than just that guitar. I'll admit it did sound good on the funk. He just sounded generic on the lead--in my opinion--as he didn't yet have that identifiable sound he acquired after changing to the cloud, habibi, etc. The Hohner is really more of an eyesore than anything for me. What I DO like from the early period is what he was playing on the pre-Controversy albums, like his second album. The leads on "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" and "Bambi" are slammin'! That tone had BODY. What was that, a Les? Didn't he do "I Wanna Be Your Lover" on American Bandstand, with a white Les or Les-based axe? Zoot If I come back as a woman, I want a body like yours...
