Got to say,
Very few people taint my decision on what I like or want.
But on the other hand, I know what I am like with people who have negative opinions of Prince.... I push until they admit to liking at least one track OR they will come round to mine and listen- which is of course what I always aim for... that way I KNOW I WILL WIN!!!

This is a bit of an odd topic as most people here will opt for Prince regardless.....?

In the early days - yes. But, instead of having a negative effect on my appreciation, all the voices of dissent actually worked as reverse psychology and made me love him even more.

Hell no.

I let a 26 year old co-worker listen to a few MP3s. He doesn't like a lot of music, but he's mad for Pink Floyd and Alans Parson Project. He listened to Purple Rain and Little Red Corvette and he was like "so Prince remade those songs... I remember hearing them in the past" and I was like "No... those are two of his trademark songs" and he was like "Heh... I didn't like them" and I just shrugged my shoulders.

JaneyPoos used to be it... then they changed what it was. Now what I am isn't it and what is it is strange and frightening to me...

Sometimes I do...I try not to. One needs to keep perspective. But it's really hard when someone makes fun of a song you haven't heard before and when you do it is sort of "ruined" because that persons comment is stuck in your head.

I also have that notion that I am missing something too...Like how everyone here LOVES moonbeam levels...like it's the shit unreleased track. And I just don't get that song...am I missing something? Over time I have learned to take what is said...esp opinion wise... WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. I am always shocked at what I read regarding his music ..especially with the varied tastes around here. Some I have no idea why they even bother coming here.

Here's an excerpt from a previous post I made...I think it makes a point on this subject.....

"I wonder if anyone realizes that negative comments cost P business? I am kickin myself in the pants still for holding off all this time from the membership cuz I actually listened to what some were saying..that it's not worth it. You get nothing for your money..the songs are total crap etc. yes, I need to make my own judgements etc as we all do. But reading chatter between 5-6 folks saying NPGMC sucks...well then it might be true...I'll save my $$$ for something that may be good. "

Didn't someone even sue him or report P to the better business bureau? When I heard that, there was no way I was going to join.

Anyway's lessons learned. Never let other people influence what you think about Prince. It's all relative and subjective...

well as much as i luv P, the people around me know this to a T, and they still try to bash him on purpose just to see how i'll react. I always let them know "don't u talk about my man". It's funny i have a friend who is a R. Kelly fanatic and she likes to fu*k with me by saying how better he is than prince. I mean i find it funny how ignorant it is to compare a genius with a man who can't relate to a woman who is over the age of 15...but hey thats JUST MY OPINION.

Sure people tell me that i'm obsessed, a fanatic, and kind of looney for being a prince fam. but i always know that at the end of the day, it is not them, but p who satisfies my sanity. when i have a bad day i put p on, when i have a good day i put p on, when i'm feeling blue, i put on power fantastic, when i feel happy i put on 17 days.

so basically to sum it all up, i luv p and whoever has a problem with it can go straight to hell.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

No!! I have never let them influence me! I have been called all kinds of things thru the years, for the love of the man and his talent. I will not allow them to influence me. People are still making fun of me for how many shows I will go to (right now it's only 3 are the jealous??)

No. That's why I will always think "All My Dreams" is pure cheeseball corn. While a lot of fans think it's one one his best.

P.S. - The Black Album is quite possibly the most overrated Prince release there ever was.

Deep breaths. smile It's just that you typed AN AWFUL LOT. big grin And, that's cool. But, if you want people to take the time to read what you wrote, make it easy on them.

And, I understand how relaxed "the rules" of grammar and such are on the Internet (especially on a fan site). But, sometimes, writing in personal shorthand makes it just as difficult to read as a 10-inch, unbroken block of text.

When people feel it's too hard to go through a post, they most often skip it. We're not harping on you. (Look how many of us praised your good post!) We just want your posting efforts to be worthwhile and well-read.

I skipped it before I got to this post.

I often have to go back and read and add spaces between thoughts...as a courtesy to others.

Probably yes. All those folks at alt.music.prince calling Musicology "Barfology" certainly didn't raise my expectations to a too high level. So I don't think I was able to see the Musicology single in its right context initially, but that was mainly because I hadn't heard the full record yet. And that applies to a lot of people who dismissed the song at first.

And let's face it, the song still doesn't have a proper chorus. Nothing can change that.

Absolutely not. My feelings of Prince and his music are my own and I refuse to let them be altered.

I've always been proud to be a Prince fan, and I've never let anyone tell me what his best songs are or what albums of his are good/bad.

We all connect with Prince's art on a different level and in our own unique way. No one should ever let someone interfere with that connection.

When people say they don't understand why I like Prince, I just say...And I don't understand why you DONT.

Anyone that flat out doesn't like Prince is just prudish, stupid and probably can't dance.....

Is anyone letting my opinion influence them right now?

Now why on earth would I let anybody's opinions influence my own opinion of Prince? I mean, come on. We all know that opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one. So why, especially if it is a rather negative opinion, let anyone influence your opinion? There is too much negativity about this, that, & the other, & Prince, jmo, is the least of influenced-opinions.

I used to be influeced by people where Prince was concerned, positive and negative. I finally got over people and their opinions with this Musicology project. I wasn't able to download the CD cause I was in Yuma, AZ and I had to use the library computer. But I realized from reading peoples opinions and expectations of this CD that I had to come up with my own opinions and kill my expectations. As a result, I love the CD. I realized that I am my own person with my own taste and if someone doesn't like Prince or the music he does, that their problem, not mine.

biggrin
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
