People's opinions influence me all the time - it's how I process those opinions that matters.

i try not to, but sometimes if i love something and other people on here are bashing it, i think wow, is something wrong with me... but i dont start hating it cause of them... but at the same time if i discounted an album in the past and i hear a lot of people saying good things about it, i'll go back and try and listen to it from another persepective thinking maybe i did'nt get it the first time... sometimes i change my opinion, other times i still dont get it.

I believe the real underlying issue here is how secure each of us are in our opinions...I mean, I used to like jughead until I read all the opinions about it and now I dont listen to it anymore...but back in 1991, before the internet, I had no idea jughead sucked....it was okay to me...but does that make me a bad person? I don't know.

I had no idea that wendy and lisa impacted Prince's music in the 80s so much until I read about it...but during the 90s, (again, before the internet) It didnt make a difference to me...I dug the symbol album. It's AMAZING how other people's opinions can sway your feelings about something, I mean like flimsy paper, it can sway with the wind, just like that...if you're not secure, that is.

sigh, I'm going to admit something personal here, but....I'm not that secure. I'm a little better than I used to be, but I'm still not where I should be. But I learned a powerful lesson from spending years on the Org and struggling with other peoples opinions who differed from mine...at the end of the day...when you sit down and listen to a song you like...its about it makes YOU feel...not anybody else...but YOU...each of us are different, unique individuals...if jughead puts a smile on your face...then that's all that matters....but the hard part is being secure enough to tell other people that (if you want to at all, sometimes, its nobody's fucking business) That's the disadvantage of the Internet, IMO...it requires everybody's feelings to be somebody else's business...

on the other hand, sharing opinions can also be very good, of course...I've learned that it's always good to have a flexible attitude and a willingness to learn...and for us more ahem, sensitive personalities, an ability to be secure enough to get through to the point of the more agressive opinions, which is very important, especially on the Org (lawd ) like manoearth said, because of opinions he's read, he's gone back to listen to something, and it changed his perspective...there's nothing wrong with that at all...that's how we learn, ya know?

anyway, I'm rambling, but...again I say at the end of the day, its about how his music makes YOU feel, and more importantly, being SECURE in that...I got a long way to go, but at least I have a goal now...

No, I don't let other peoples opinions influence me. Most of my friends and family are not Prince fans, they think he's quite bizarre, although they do not deny his talent. Prince is not always an easy musician to love, but I'm in this for the love and enjoyment of his music. I try not to think about his religious yadda, yadda or all the other silly things he's said and done over the years. He is a superior musician and I'm sure I will be enjoying his music for many years to come. If others lose interest or don't care for him, that's up to them.

i have never really understood folks that dont care for prince, but, to each his own. i go on my merry way, everyone that knows me knows i love the man, my kids are well used to the idea of hearing him daily, they enjoy the music as well...nothing better to me than to see my babies break out in starfish and coffee makes me smile everytime. as far as everyone else, i used to feel the need to 'protect' him, you know, stand up for him and his interesting ways....now i just look at them and say, " thats prince for ya "

Hmmm. I'll admit, I used 2. When I first became a fan back in the early 90s, I was still in Middle School. It wasn't exactly the cool thing 2 be a Prince fan when every1 else was listening 2 Nirvana, STP, all that kinda stuff. However, the older I got, the less it bothered me. Why should I give a damn what people think? Now I actually get respect 4 being a Prince fan, and my friends are more curious than they are detractors.

Hence, why I'm able to happily say that I think that the Sign O The Times album is Prince's most overrated work, and I'm also quite happy to say that I absolutely love the New Power Soul album.

I have quietly amassed my Prince collection and enjoyed it on my own, but my enjoyment of Prince has always been dependent on my ability to tune out people who have told me that he's crazy or that his music isn't good for me or whatever the case might be. Sometimes I'm in a frame of mind where I'll find a song to be excessively dirty or silly, but never more than any of today's music, which puts it all in perspective.

I also think that it's important to note that only an artist like Prince could be so diverse in his abilities as to create a flowing fountain of songs so that we could argue over what we find good and bad...the typical artist does the same thing forever and you either like it all or you don't. Prince is so diverse..and so are we. It would be a bit unnatural for us to like 100% of what he puts out...and it's fun to see where we differ and what we value.

Ultimately, though, since I'm the only one around me who loves Prince, I have to remind myself that I'M the one who's RIGHT!!!

This is a good thread. Ya'll post where good. Like many newbies I joined the Org 2 learn more about Prince. But the things I'm interested in2 learnin' more about him is his 'personality' I know enough 'bout his music but I like 2 here more about that. Just the everyday Prince not 'The Artist' or just 'Prince' as a regular guy. Everytime I starta thread askin' sumthin' that's in relation 2 his 'personality' I get SO MANY views but few responses. Unless I gotta pic 2 share/article reviews/hey my topics are up 4oa while. IMO there needa be more discussing of his personality. In my environment I only have 1 friend that's in2 his music ALMOST as much as mine. The song that converted her wuz 'Diamonds and Pearls'. I take my CD Player 2 school @ times when I have last lunch & of course those devices aren't allowed @ school I just stay in the bathroom & play my Prince CDs. Pictures I've draw of Prince I'd carry wit me everyday 2 school but I neva exposed them..so not many know how much I like Prince. I know all the reactions I'd get...& many would be very crucial esp. livin' down the Southern VA. Ne1 eva asked me could they see my folder(a Light Navy Blue color folder I keeps the pix in) I'd say "Sorry,it's private". & 1 time on the bus(I seriously h8 ridin' the bus-gonna be drivin' next April!) I said "No" & the boy wouldn't take my answer & tried 2 take it from me he got it & then anotha boy(ughz..I can't believe 1 my friend's liked him Aak!) took it from that boy & I said "Gehme my folda" & just constant bickerin' I jumped ova the seat pushin' da otha boy out the seat & I hit da otha boy 2 get my Prince pix back. He seen 1(It wuz of P when he wuz playin' the guitar solo @ the end-loved it so I hadda draw it) & he seen it he wuz like "It jussa dude that's playin' a guitar..that ayn private..I seen plenty of private art b4"..blah blah shit basically I got it back but the thing wuz it where sum pix I found from the net & I've drawn cuz I liked'em & I didn't want him or nebody else 2 see'em. The boy obvisiously didn't know that wuz Prince. Still from then on,when I'm on the bus I neva carry my Prince drawings so openly,the folder @least. Only when I walk around in school tho. I always said If sumbody @ school or even out of school asked "Do u really like Prince?" I'd always answer wit Pride & say "Yes,I do". But until that happens I keep his likings of him on a DL,only my best friend & a few close friends know I like him. I think I use Prince's songs & charisma 4 my own personal use(Art Inspiration-the most) not sumthin' I place as an open thing,unless sumbody asked me. I wuz gonna start sumthin' back wit her since she started wit me,but I thought about it & the area I am in..& decided 2 w8. I mean if she said all this 'n that Why she not gonna say it in MY face..not 2 sumbody elses. & that's the thought I kept in reminding myself id I ovaheard her say sumthin' 'bout me. 'Let her talk all that shit..she gon' see I ayn e-z 2 get mad & da only way she gettin' my attention is 'til she starts sumthin' physically'-since then I've kept that thought & I'm still always PO'd when I hear her talk shit but afda in2 listenin' 2 P's songs & drawing I'm okay afda awhile. Like I know I dun like his song 'Raspberry Beret'...I'm just not feelin' that song in particular. I use 2 not like 'Automatic' until I gave it a chance & I started feelin' that but the ending I neva let that play alla way thru. Most da time if pplz comment negatively on 1 his songs & if I got it I tryda check it out & listen 2 it & see if I'm hearin' whatchu hearin' & then I give my opinion. Actually, I've followed P's career since the beginning and used to find myself in bitter battles over him. But, since I've gotten older, I just shrug it off. Case in point: Just yesterday my sister claims two things...one, that Prince has undergone plastic surgery; and two, that Prince is mixed. Well, we all know the truth, so I didn't engage in a major battle with her. I just simply told her that his album is coming out this Tuesday and I'll buy her a copy. She laughed and went her merry way...

I wish that fams here at Org. were a bit more accepting of the fact that we all have differing opinions re: Prince. Some of us feel that P could do no wrong, even on his worst day. Others feel that it's healthy and good to be critical of P every now and again. I fall in the latter category. It used to be a time when I would defend any and everything P did, even though I didn't like a lot of music from the 90's. I'd just find a way to defend the music [and sometimes the man's actions] because I just think it's a travesty that people refuse to accept the fact that he is a genius. The most frustrating thing is knowing that he has composed such great music, but because he is who he is, no one wants to listen. I think it's very sad. So, yes as for the music, I often get defensive. But, if people are criticizing P for superficial things (e.g., feminity, symbol, record battle, etc.), then I don't let their ignorance influence the fact that I'll continue to listen to his music...even when I don't necessarily agree with his approach.

And, I understand how relaxed "the rules" of grammar and such are on the Internet (especially on a fan site). But, sometimes, writing in personal shorthand makes it just as difficult to read as a 10-inch, unbroken block of text.

When people feel it's too hard to go through a post, they most often skip it. We're not harping on you. (Look how many of us praised your good post!) We just want your posting efforts to be worthwhile and well-read.
