At what point did u become a Prince fan?

I know it's not terribly interesting but lets hear a couple of your stories. I'd like to know which track it was which pushed u over the edge. I'm claiming Housequake and If I was your Girlfriend.

For me it was when I was sick in bed listening to the radio after SOTT came out. The title track was in the charts at the time. The station played Housequake a couple of times and the new single which was gonna be If I was your Girlfriend. I sent my dad out to get me Parade on tape so I could hear it upstairs on the tape deck. When I was up and about again I went and got SOTT on vinal. Next was Purple Rain and I was completely hooked at that stage. I ended up owning all the backlist before Lovesexy was released.

Purple rain was my first Prince tape and I was hooked. I was listening to that just before D & P was released.

We grew up listening to COUNTRY in my house (Johnny Cash is still the man) but I wasn't that interested. My younger sister and I always looked forward to the days when we had enough money saved up to buy an LP at the local K-Mart.

I have to give credit to my little sis...(she's 16 months younger) for coming home with "1999" while I was buying something far more lame now that all of this time has gone by. "Purple Rain" would be the first time I'd put my money down to pick up my own copy of a Prince LP. Once Sign O' the Times came out, I became officially obsessed and picked up everything that led up to "Purple Rain" and have stayed on board ever since!

First time I saw him on Solid Gold I kinda went like WOW this guy is Hot. I kissed the TV Screen then I ran out to buy 1999. When they used to Show WHEN DOVES CRY on Friday Night videos and Hot Tracks it was like Magic. I had to buy Purple Rain and all his Other albums. I used to Kiss the albums in the store and rearrange the albums so that he was in the front. I still do that. Arrange them in the front. Then when he did the Purple Rain Tour my Uncle camped out since I was sick and got tickets for 6 shows at Nassau Coliseum. The next day I ran to the Village to Find HOW COME U DON"T CALL ME. Only the Japan Import had it available. I took out my Entire savings and bought Every 12" or 7" I could find. People laughed that I bought those Platnum albums . Everybody Laughed as I had Purple Hair streaks and Garters and polka dot Gloves. I was Always like Taken and it was Kinda like us fans had this Cosmic Thing going on. People in High School wanted to Know all about the shows. Anyway, Prince made me Happy cause he was Soo Good onstage and I was So In Heaven. I actually learned about Sex from Prince through his Records and films and appearances. Prince was such a Good Teacher. The Man Sizzled Sex and Still Does.

a late uncle of mine (bless his soul) brought me on the right track, he was the biggest jazz freak I have ever known but also liked his share of Soul & Funk. On a mix tape he had put together with various artists there was "Controversy" pumping hard as the opening track. a couple of days later I heard "Sexuality" on the radio... soon after I was heading straight for the recordstore to get that LP!!
Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

It was about 4 years ago...If I remember correctly someone bought me Sign 'O' The Times for Christmas along with Purple Rain (the movie) after remembering that I liked alot of Prince's songs.

I used to skip through alot of SOTT when I first got it (boxed), listening to only particular tracks at first, I didn't realise how much of a fantastic album it was until after seeing Purple Rain for the first time; that's what hooked me, that's what made me see how great a talent Prince was.
As soon as I'd finished watching the movie, I went out and bought the album, about a week later I got 1999, then Parade and so on... smile

Man, I feel old. I became a fan when I first heard "Soft and Wet" on an Oakland radio station, and I became a lifelong loyalist when I heard "Dirty Mind".

My older brother bought Purple Rain on vinyl, and we'd sing and dance in the basement, me on the high part, him on the low. Yeah, we probably looked like spastic white boys, but it opened my eyes to great music.

When I was 14 I had a copy of Controversy and 1999. Purple Rain was released in theaters and I saw the movie and bought the LP. The next year a friend exposed me to Dirty Mind and She's Always in my Hair and some tracks off For You. I was hooked. When I heard She's Always In My Hair within seconds I just said "Prince is a genius".

It's a complicated story, but the first time I went completely over the edge and never came back was when I saw the trailer for Purple Rain on TV and heard the end of Let's Go Crazy for the first time ever. It's freakish how one guitar solo can change everything. eek

That was the exact moment for me too! I heard When Doves Cry on the radio before then and just thought it was a strange song (no bass). And there was something about the older singles like 1999 and Little Red Corvette that sounded so different from everything else at the time...I can't really describe it, but combined with the erotic, smoky images from the 1999 album, it seemed to me very sinful to like Prince.

But then that MTV-style commercial for the film came on TV with Let's Go Crazy or I Would Die 4 U in the background; I was hooked before I even saw the movie.

Ding, Ding,Ding... same thing for me. I saw the trailer in the Theater -- that is when I flew off the edge. I remember liking Prince 2 minutes into the 1999 album back in 1982.

I became a Prince in 1980 or 1981, when I was in the 5th grade, which was when the "Prince" album was out. I would jam to 'Sexy Dancer," "I Wanna Be Your Lover," and "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad." That year Prince was the opening act for Rick James but the concert was billed as a battle concert..Rick James vs. Prince. I asked my mom to buy tickets to the concert. She did. We went with her friend and her friend's son. He was about a year younger than me. Boy was my mom shocked eek when he came out in the high-heel boots, bikini and the trench coat. I loved it..that's when I fell in love with the MAN. Then Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999 came out. I lost my damn mind. Especially with the 1999 album. My best friend at the time was a Prince freak too and when spent many days trying to get to his concerts. In addition, there was a dj here in Detroit that went by the name Mojo, he was a huge Prince fan..OMG...he hipped so many people in Detroit to Prince. He would play unreleased songs, extended versions, along with playing the music of all his proteges...I Love You Mojo....

Sorry for the long post...this thread just took me back to my childhood.

btw...did anyone else go to the concert with Rick and Prince?

I guess it would have to be after hearing When Doves Cry on the radio back in the summer of 84. I actually had 1999 and liked it a lot, but can't say I was hooked. I kinda forgot about him when I heard Doves on the radio (hey I was 14 and in the midst of my headbanging days), I heard the song, and was BLOWN away. I immediately bought the cassette and was knocked the fuck out. Been hooked ever since.
