LarrytheGOD said: Lighten up.. if you hate everything thats on the radio so much.. um aren't you maybe not with the times? A lot of people here and outside the org agree that contemporary radio is total crap because of tighter playlists and station ownership consolidation. Real cutting-edge music (Outkast notwithsatnding) doesn't get played on the radio because PDs don't want to scare away the majority of their audience. Most people listen to the radio for 15 minutes at a time and just want to hear hits or what they consider familar. The times does not equal cutting edge. Bad choice of words on your part. We don't want Prince sounding like nobody. Just to work harder at some "quality " music. He can do his own thing just be creative instead of doing the same sound over and over. And making excuses up for what he created. Like he's giving out some type of lesson.
We are all fans and the honest truth is this lp is not good. He should call on some of his old croonies and make a great lp. (collaboration). Put his ego to the side. This is a cop out not to have to compete with today's artist. Why should he?....cause he set the bar high at one time. Plus he's not dead yet. My opinion...

This puzzles me.. because Prince was always the one embracing new technology up until 1998.. when I heard the WAR and saw Prince capture the Yahoo award for best internet single I thought he was way ahead of his time. But lately I can understand how with all the techno in the clubs that one would wish the master to take over.

Illusion Coma Pimp and Circumstance sounds like a new kind of mix and sound... doesn't it? Sex Me Baby sounds like a try at sounding like what's on the radio today...
But historically Prince always tries to put out stuff that doesn't sound like what's on the radio next to it... right? My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

During the late 90s artists have taken advantage of new computer aided technology in the studio.. Dance music "EVOLVED" so much that clubs, radio and video moved ahead faster and faster to keep up with new hits delivered by a sexier and more energetic image. While Prince's music was slightly enhanced.. allowing for interesting sound in Emancipation and The Rainbow Children... he has fallen behind the mainstream creatively. I feel its because he has too many compositions already completed in the can/vault.. his work in the past several years is slightly outdated -not fresh. With the release of Musicology its becoming clear (by music lovers in touch with fresh music) that this is a nice little bit of an "old school" nostaligic time capsule. My question (not complaint) is.. When is Prince ever going to retune his aging "do-it-all-by-myself" studio habits out of 1st gear and move ahead with some fresh talent that can produce his work so that its at least up with the times? There is the old saying.. "If you can't beat em join em" Prince has dabbled with embracing fresh new computer aided production methods on some of his 2001 NPGMC jams... but he has retreated back to the piano (ONA), the jazz(Xpectation/etc) and now the old school jam (Musicology) Prince is so out of touch with the times.. he announced that NEWS was some "new direction in music" but it turned out it was only a new direction for "his" outdated music as even some of his die-hard fans yawned it off as another forgotten project. Do you hope with Prince's next release.. that he goes cutting edge again and gets with the times? Maybe even release an all dance album? When Prince calls out all of the sorry MoFos standing up against the wall do you question yourself??? [This message was edited Mon May 3 11:07:37 2004 by Drkman]

He used to be. But today New Exciting and Fresh??? No. Dance music today is Hard Hitting, Fast Moving and Edge Technology. Prince today still has his rad-ride sound stuck in 1st Gear for some strange reason. But I think after this tour he has his best album in 20 years waiting in the wings and he ain't gonna be giving this one away for free. Its my guess that he has been doing what he has been doing for the past years for a good reason. I think someone once said that he made the mistake in trying to get with the times with Rave.

Would it hurt for the brainwashed purple coolaid guzzlers to be a bit more specific when addressing happy MoFos with something to say? I disagree that Prince is completely burnt out. He has shared so much of himself and his life with us througout the years its amazing, through the good times and bad. But is he hip with the times? Uh Uh But does he want to be? He is too comfortable where he is and with what he is doing. While it may be interesting to debate what happened to Prince's competitive nature over the years one thing for sure, music evolved without him.

Prince is NOT BEHIND the Times! His Music is Great! His tour is Selling Out . His face is on Many Magazines. I wouldn't EVER want Him to Do it Any OTHER Way! Prince needs NO Help from Anyone he is Doing a Great Job. Why bring in Different People? His sound is not DATED at All! It's all FRESH! YOU ARE SERIOUSLY TRIPPIN!

Anyone who thinks that Prince should get with the times is straight up tripping. If anything the world's catching up to Prince cause homeboy's been in the top 5 for the past 3 weeks. Not to say that the charts mean much anymore but hey, alot of people are checking it out. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

He doesn't need to get with this times; he just needs to learn how to pick which singles to release. Our boy doesn't have a clue. And for people here crying the blues about the title track getting no airplay....why? It's a weak song.

Prince doesn't NEED to be doing anything. However, if he wants to be the great artist he was in the past he should probably get rid of everything that's familiar. Dump the guitars, unplug the Linn-Drum, lose Wendy & Lisa's numbers for good, and hand Rhonda, Renato, and John Blackwell their pink slips. He'd probably need to get away from music for a while and comeback fresh with some new energy and perspective.
That sounds good. I may do the same-- getting away from the music that is.

Thats the first thing I thought too! He could use an opening act right now!! you where so wrong for that ...prince is a true artist one with real musical talent ..yes anybody can buy a beat box and a acid pro software and make some beats ..but can they actually play..a guitar or piano....and write songs ...prince worked hard for his musical success.he had to crawl before he could walk ..now days all you have to do is come out with one dam hit .and your there on a rolling stone mag and any other mag you will find ...but the question is ...for how long ....will they be on top.. the here today gone tomarrow so called artist..give me a freaking break...everything now is about bleed them dry for all there worth right now ..then when there used up in all of 1 yr you won't even remember there names until you see them on where are they now...so no prince don't need a opening act..

Look I agree that Prince is a genius, his albums have more creative energy packed inside them than most one hit wonders' whole discography. I also think that his recent album is not a sound indication to what he could do in the studio. Unlike half the artists who I admit I love to dance to at the clubs, Prince has tremendous VISION.
But his impact on the world right now in this day and time is microscopic. Given he rang the bell at the grammy opener, it is really an over-exaggeration that he is with the times. He's running a neat cool trick by giving the album away to boost the charts, (which many argue was Sony's brilliant business strategy) and yet Prince will take credit for it. So maybe with tricks like this he is ahead of the game. But he's failing to have IMPACT on generations of music lovers who are flocking to other less visionary acts. While i've argued against this for many months, I think i'm giving in and starting to agree that its going to have to start with a new kind of music video.

Actually, I hope for his next release Prince moans into a Dixie paper cup so that y'all would have something real to "complain" about. Have you heard The Chocolate Invasion or Solaughterhouse...those are pretty cutting edge, if you ask me. Slaughterhouse is as close to a dance album as P is going to get...it's mostly funk tunes. I see that most on here have voiced the opinion that to imply that P get with the times is a silly statement. For him, there are no times to get. He and his music is timeless. They have no meaning...it's probably one of the reasons he releases music on new disks that was recorded a long time ago and it still sounds fresh. Christian Zombie Vampires
