Do you think Prince should get with the Times? Back in the day.. Prince was cutting edge, experimental funk/R&B.. his 80's Pop was guitar finger licking good.. and its been well known that the music that came out of Paisley Park was ahead of its time. (ffwd)
During the late 90s artists have taken advantage of new computer aided technology in the studio.. Dance music "EVOLVED" so much that clubs, radio and video moved ahead faster and faster to keep up with new hits delivered by a sexier and more energetic image. While Prince's music was slightly enhanced.. allowing for interesting sound in Emancipation and The Rainbow Children... he has fallen behind the mainstream creatively. I feel its because he has too many compositions already completed in the can/vault.. his work in the past several years is slightly outdated -not fresh. With the release of Musicology its becoming clear (by music lovers in touch with fresh music) that this is a nice little bit of an "old school" nostaligic time capsule. My question (not complaint) is.. When is Prince ever going to retune his aging "do-it-all-by-myself" studio habits out of 1st gear and move ahead with some fresh talent that can produce his work so that its at least up with the times? There is the old saying.. "If you can't beat em join em" Prince has dabbled with embracing fresh new computer aided production methods on some of his 2001 NPGMC jams... but he has retreated back to the piano (ONA), the jazz(Xpectation/etc) and now the old school jam (Musicology) Prince is so out of touch with the times.. he announced that NEWS was some "new direction in music" but it turned out it was only a new direction for "his" outdated music as even some of his die-hard fans yawned it off as another forgotten project. Do you hope with Prince's next release.. that he goes cutting edge again and gets with the times? Maybe even release an all dance album?

I agree with you i dont know what station he listens to but all i ever hear is the same old rap hip hop songs now that is not real music it is all about the younger audience the problem is the kids today dont understand the real music all they know is the hip hop with all of the sampling going on but we have to try and educate our kids for example my 16 year old daughter never use to listen to prince but now that i have sat her down and let her listen to some of his music here and there she is starting to understand what i am talking about oh and by the way me and her are going to the concert together on june 2nd in san jose she wants to see for herself what real music is all about.

I don't think Prince is behind the times at all when you consider:
1) The rising popularity of acts such as The Darkness, whose music and video scream 80s hair metal rock. 2) Popular singer/songwriters like Alicia Keys and John Mayer who embrace real music rather than a lot of electronic, computer generated crap. 3) Artists such as Outkast (whose album I heard for the first time this weekend and has Prince vibes all over it) and new artists such as Anthony Hamilton, who sounds like D'Angelo doing Prince. Old School seems to be the new trend. [This message was edited Thu Apr 15 10:39:20 2004 by Joi]

good for you, and her With that said, if it weren't for my mom listening to all her old school records back when I was little I would not know of all the pioneers and genius people like Smoky, JB, Al Green, and lawd have mercy lets not forget about Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. And what really kicked it off was when I heard the female rap duo Salt & Peppa sample Otis Reddings "Tramp" and my dad said son let me show you something...he broke out the Otis Redding greatest hits album and the rest is history. Good for Her, she will be floored after she sees that. You can feel Prince without seeing him but when you see him OH LAWD you will see the light *********************************************

"The times", IMO, are shit.
What I see in the mainstream now - Tuneless "urban" R&B, cookie-cutter dance "anthems", teen acts (in various 'genres') and tired old rappers rapping about the same old shit they've been rapping about since the mid-80s. So no, I wouldn't like to hear Prince 'get with the times'. I would have liked to see Prince develop (at the time) on the pseudo house/funk of the Black Album/Lovesexy era (The Line, Le Grind, Cindy C, Escape etc) - I think that was the last time that I thought Prince could really add something to a style he was flirting with.

Maybe Mutt Lange or Carole King would be nice Jeux Sans Frontiers

Well, I wish he would at least stop thinking his last several albums are the royal shit compared to the more successful artists that putting out today. Most Prince fans in the org aren't with the times... Most of what I hear at Discos and Pubs (ala MTV) is pretty fun music to enjoy. True his old music is funkier but I don't know. Prince is in a time zone all by himself. God bless him.

Who Da phuck wants Prince sounding like Hoobastank, Blink-182, and the toilet full of crappy alt/emo/mall punk bands that pollute the airwaves. Will any of you naggy haters be paying $80 for a fortytwo year old Britney Spears concert twenty years rom now? Ten years from now, will you fondly remember the first time you listened to Puddle of (poo ) Mudd?
Please!! When Prince is headling the oldies tour to support PBS telethons, I'll be there funkin' for Jamaica! Jeux Sans Frontiers

why on earth would anyone want prince to TRY and be cutting edge? did you people not hear 'loose'? or jughead? or any of his 'remixes' in the last ten years?!?!
the guy needs to just strip it down, have a small 3-4 piece band and write some good SONGS. god, the new album is 12 songs, about 45 minutes, and it still has some complete utter dross.

My mother told me she started dancing with me when I was six months old. From the first time I can remember we had great & different types of music playing in the house all the time. Otis Redding, Solomon Burke, James Brown, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkle(?). I developed a love for all types of music thanks to my mother. My kids are 7,9 & 12 they get tired of a song in a week because the radio plays it over & over & over. There is no "Get with the times" the time is over before you "GET IT". Say what you want Prince does get you thinking, talking, wondering what the hell is he doing, to me that is fresh you stay interested to see what he will come up with next.
Prince is time and that is no trick.

Ahhhhh the comments from the very simple minded... Next time your panties get in a bunch.. try something other than collective babble.. "let prince be Prince"... God bless the weak and the mentally handicapped99 Back to the point.. The thing about listening to Musicology that strikes me as strange.. is that his lyrical mastery has shrunken to where I might even agree that maybe he needs to lay off the self-glorication diarrhea. I mean, he seems to be trying very hard to convince to the world in his lyrics that he is hip. In fact after hearing it several times.. some have mentioned to me that he's trying a bit too hard I mean the reality of the situation is that Prince IS Prince and he's been seen by a new music loving generation as a gone but not forgotten freak for the past 10 years. When a new Prince release comes out.. there always are some new rays of sunshine that show how Prince's music is growing. But whats great about Musicology.. is that he presses pause for a moment and takes us all back to the days of good music done with plain old instruments, and he does it a "back to basics" style that works great in the video. Hey at least he started making videos again.. and its a pretty good one at that.

There's nothing cutting edge about the times. "Getting with the times" sounds more like conforming to the status quo to me. There's nothing special about that. When Prince was in his artistic and commercial heyday he wasn't even with the times, which is what made him such a singular figure to begin with. This post not for the wimp contingent. Do you really want Prince (or any true artist that has established their own unique identity) to produce music that's "...up with the times?"
The worst thing any creative artist could do is produce music that gets stuck in any TIME. This guarantees that in TIME they'll sound dated and have their careers eventually run out of TIME. Great music is that which transcends its TIME, stands the test of TIME and becomes TIME-less. Be careful of what you wish for... "...party's over...oops out of TIME." Tribal Disorder "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

[quote] Yes actually for his first major label release since Rave. Especially in the studio embracing new technology. And most importantly because it can't compete with the new grooves which are all pretty much "with the times" We all know (but don't want to admit) where this is heading once the novelty wears off
