I listened to him since 78, but it was the Controversy Album that did it for me.
In particular "Do Me Baby." ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^

On hearing the songs Red Corvette and 1999 I liked both, though only as much as other pop songs I liked as a kid and I still have a clear memory of seeing 1999 for the 1st time and thought it sounded ace,It was only when my mam and dad taped the Kiss video and watched it thousands of times that I became what I would call an actual fan of Prince ,they also bought the album Parade which I eventually half inched to go with my other vinyl.

I became a Prince FAN when he first performed on American Bandstand (early eighties)....he had the long hair. After that, I just thought there was nothing greater than Prince "Oh my God hear U R, prettiest thing in life I've ever seen....."

[This message was edited Thu Apr 15 10:19:49 2004 by BlueEyedAngel] Your dad bought you 1999 when you were 6??? The music industry seriously needed warning labels back then. My friend and I used to listen to "Let's Pretend We're Married" and laugh at all the swearing. And then we heard Dirty Mind...

First time I heard Controversy and Sexuality on the radio when I was in 7th grade back in 81. LOL. And yes.....WDAS in Philly played Sexuality on the radio. LOL. I will do today what you won't, so tomorrow I can do what you can't.

PurpleCharm said: I became a Prince in 1980 or 1981, when I was in the 5th grade, which was when the "Prince" album was out. I would jam to 'Sexy Dancer," "I Wanna Be Your Lover," and "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad." That year Prince was the opening act for Rick James but the concert was billed as a battle concert..Rick James vs. Prince. I asked my mom to buy tickets to the concert. She did. We went with her friend and her friend's son. He was about a year younger than me. Boy was my mom shocked when he came out in the high-heel boots, bikini and the trench coat. I loved it..that's when I fell in love with the MAN. Then Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999 came out. I lost my damn mind. Especially with the 1999 album. My best friend at the time was a Prince freak too and when spent many days trying to get to his concerts. In addition, there was a dj here in Detroit that went by the name Mojo, he was a huge Prince fan..OMG...he hipped so many people in Detroit to Prince. He would play unreleased songs, extended versions, along with playing the music of all his proteges...I Love You Mojo....
Sorry for the long post...this thread just took me back to my childhood. btw...did anyone else go to the concert with Rick and Prince? [This message was edited Thu Apr 15 10:44:30 2004 by PurpleCharm] Whoa....MOJO...I remember reading about him back in the late 80's. I will do today what you won't, so tomorrow I can do what you can't.

Controversy was the first album I was aware of. I really dug it. I saw the Controversy tour show in March 1982 at the Met Center (right where Mall of America is now!) and the next night I caught him at a surprise First Ave gig! My first of many! I've been on the ride ever since and have seen him at First Ave, St. Paul Civic Center, 7th St. Entry, Glam Slam, Paisley Park (many, many times), Target Center, Northrup Auditoreum, Xcel Energy Center, Downtown Minneapolis outside (Mill City Festival), New York City outside the NBC Studios and on and on. I've seen perhaps 50-75 live Prince shows, sometime I'll figure it out and make a list. I'll add three more at least in June!!! Yay!

Well, damn it but i'm either younger or came later because i'm sad.
Anyway, around Parade my elder bros and sisters were serious Prince heads. They had this two single set which from memory was A/ Girls and Boys + B/ Under the Cherry Moon; and A/ 17 days + B/ She's always in my hair. They were spinning all the time so Prince by Proxy for me. But that was just the beginning - I really got into Prince with Lovesexy. Played it again and again and again - so i suppose that's when i really got into Prince. And if I had to pin it down on a single song, it was Anna Steisa.

Not sure. I just remember being intrigued by a person who my parents didn't like me listening to.

Ive been a fan since about 98. I had known prince and his music, but i never bought any. I was workin at circuit city at the time. I asked the "cute" cd clerk girl which album she thought was really worth tryin, she said "well all of em are good". So being who i am, i wanted the most i could get from one album. I saw the hits but im not a fan of hits albums because they dont allow a newcomer to find their OWN direction in music. ANYWAY, i borrowed like 5 bucks to buy SOTT. I got in my car and put it in. Play in the sunshine came on. Then the last modulation in that song came on. I was hoooked. I had never heard any genius like that before and i was a HUGE music fan, id done it ALL, from classical to zappa. Man, i remember that day very vividly. I liked "1999" and "Little Red Corvette, but it was "Let's Go Crazy" that made me appreciate him and he quickly became my all time favorite guitarist.
But it was his rise, during "Anna Stesia" on 11/3/88, that cemented it for me. Lovesexy Funkateer

I became a Prince fan when I was 7 years old, the time Purple Rain came out. There wasn't anyone better. Its been 20 years and I still think he's the man.

But not as mad as she was when she heard Darling Nikki! She went nuts on my parents for letting me listen to that & for letting me watch Purple Rain too! They still let me though but told me not to let her know! To this day she says Prince is filthy & cant understand why I like him so much! She will admit that she's heard he's one of the best musicians ever but she cant get over Darling Nikki!

That's easy, I officially crossed over the first time I heard When Dovs Cry.
The radio had already been playing 17 days which got me thinking that Prince had something, but WDC was (and still is) soooo different from everything else that I was instantly hooked. I had to hear everything else...
