Am I the ONLY one who thinks MUSICOLOGY sucks?

I know I'm probably gonna draw a lot of heat over this, but IT MUST BE SAID!

As a longtime Prince fan (since the Controversy album hit the shelves, I was hooked into this man and bought practically every one of his records since), I found it hard to listen to "Musicology" without grimacing more than a few times. I didn't even grimace this much when I got "The Rainbow Children" because there was a little more funk in the mix there... yet and still, that was ANOTHER project that didn't impress me.

And before anyone says it, yes, I KNOW the art of music and the goal of the musician is to evolve and change... but DAMN.

The only track worth a damn -- in my opinion -- was 'Illusion, Coma, Pimp and Circumstance'. Musicology didn't raise my eyebrows, nor did any of the other stuff on it. It was like Prince decided to rehash a bunch of old ideas from every genre, throw them into an incoherent jumble on one CD, and call it "The Study of All Music".

I KNOW the man has better chops in him... but I cannot honestly say that he used any of them for this project. Why??! WHYYYYY????!!!

And no... I'm not one of those guys who goes to his concerts and only gets on my feet when he plays the OLD shit, either.

I have ultimate respect for his vision and his abilities... but PRINCE... if you EVER slip in here to read these threads... DOOD, PLEEEEZE... bring the FUNK next time, muhfuggah! Damn!

And by the way... these opinions in no way reflect the views of the management... and this has been a Public Service Announcement.

First off, you're surely not alone. I can think of atleast 10 other orgers whom agree with you. I'm not one of them but respect your opinion none the less. Maybe Musicology isn't your cup of tea coffee

Some people think Chaos & Disorder is crap, some love it.

Some think LoveSexy is one of the best ever, some think it's overrated.

Some think TRC was an atrosity, some think it was of the most creative, musically solid albums ever.

Just goes back to taste and preference man. Fans of other musicians (even some of the greats) only have one, two maybe three albums to compare and contrast with. We have damn near 30 as Prince fans! Our taste in music, is just as diverse as our race, gender, and sexual orientation. Which is cool

Bottom line: It's not a funk album...was at a bar tonight where they threw on some Dirty Mind tracks and I had a moment where I was, like, damn...old Prince funk. But it's really something different now, either you go with it or you don't. It really is a tribute to the old artists he loves, which is real sign of maturity to me. Came home, put on "On the Couch," and realized it's pretty much the best Al Green tribute ever. And that's no small feat. ICPC is actually my least favorite song.

I was attempting to describe it to someone who had not heard any of the tracks. I said, if you hold it up against his old stuff, it's not that impressive. On it's own, it's a decent effort, IMO.

...Yeah, that was how I felt about it too...but as others here have said, different strokes...all I can do is shrug and wait for the next album...

Well said. It's a major reason why this "ride" is so much fun. biggrin
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

It's too bad but it seems Prince often pays for his versatility. You never know which Prince you are going to get on any album. Will it be funk Prince, rock Prince, R&B Prince, or rap Prince. He's bound to leave someone disappointed. Not me when it comes to " Musicology". At least we can't say the guy is predictable. Don't worry, I'm sure your Prince will return when you least expect it.

I'm an old-time Prince fan and will always be a devoted fam. However, I NEVER once liked a Prince album upon first listen. I always understood that his music has to grow on me. Perhaps you'll like it more as you listen more. The only album that I disliked with a passion no matter how much I listened was TRC. But even then, there were some songs that I loved once I really listened and opened my mind...and ears to.

Does anyone else have this experience? How many times should you listen before you conclude that you like/dislike a Prince recording (song or album)?

I get the idea that some of you think along the same lines that I do... and I HAVE read other threads...

And some of you are so hard-core that Prince could make a whole record of himself grunting and taking a shit, and when it went "Kerplunk" you would be the first in line to buy it...

...and then some of you think that I only like the FUNKY stuff. But this is far from the truth.

I have listened to -- and appreciated for its genius -- many of Prince's different styles. Even the "Old Friends for Sale" CD had it's appeal. TRC didn't have much, although a few songs grew on me.

But the basic idea of a compilation is COHESION between the different elements (songs) that draws them together. Any musician here will be happy to explain to you the concept of "concept" if I'm not being clear here.

To say that Musicology has an ounce of that cohesion is overstatement... and the marketing genius that Prince IS, he probably realized it and decided to call it Musicology, as in "the study of music" in its various forms... so that he could throw together too many unrelated cuts into one CD.

The funny part is, not one of the songs really tells me anything about the study of music, or so-called Musicology. Most of the tracks are pretty forgettable, with no strong hooks or stand-out lyrics.

IT SUCKED.

Doesn't mean I've given up hope for the brotha.

But as a man who respects all opinions, I feel as entitled to mine as the next guy is entitled to his.

Who's the next man...?
