Next Single......Call My Name?

I was in the local wrecka stow last week, when all of a sudden Musicology is blasting in my ear. There are a bunch of dudes just standing around talking and when they hear the song they all start bouncing they're heads. They start talking about the song and how they like it and all, which was pretty good to hear because none of them look like they listen to Prince (look like they were more into full R&B/rap music).
Finally when I get up to the counter, me and the store owner start chatting about the song, and he's going on and on about how he really likes it and that this is a good comeback album for Prince.
Ok yada yada yada.....The guy that brings him all the CD's and things for the shop.....He starts asking me what I felt about the album, because earlier I had mentioned I have the whole thing, and I tell him I like Call My Name the most and that I think it should be his next single and he informs me that it will be the next single off the album.

Now until Sony or Prince actually mentions this, it's a rumor, but the source can't get no better then that. The guy actually gets all the music that this store sells, so he would know. He was the one that bought the Musicology single that they played while I was there and ya'll know the single ain't even out yet or at least it wasn't then.

Sorry so damn long ya'll.....I'll holla!!

No. it's gotta be I.C.P&C. With the right video (comically acting out the words) It would be BIG....

I'm thinking a rehash of Raspberry Beret - half animation/ half live action.

He needs to follow up Musicology with A Million Days, it is a definite number 1 single if it gets airplay.....Call my name would be a nice 3rd release after everyone calms down from the 2nd release biggrin

I actually think he should put out 2 singles next, one for R&B crowd and one for Pop crowd.

Of course I've already said I like Call My Name as a single(R&B), but I also like Cinnamon Girl a lot(POP).

I think Call My Name would actually cross over though and be a bigger hit single.

We should all know by now that Prince's audience is all over the map. Why should their appearance have you convinced that they don't dig Prince?

They just didn't seem like the type, that's all.

Well, I personally feel that although Call My Name is a good song (it took a while to grow on me), it'll be a poor choice for a single.

There's so many other radio-friendly songs on the album that would raise it's profile a lot better, A Million Days, Illusion, Coma, Pimp and Circumstance and Cinnamon Girl to name but three. These three songs have more of a poppy appeal and are more likely to grab the non-fan's attention.

I can't imagine many non-fans humming along to this one.

I agree. Million Days goes number 1 with the right marketing, Reflection goes top 10, and What Do U Want Me To Do? goes top 20. ICP&C maybe goes top 40.

I agree with the notion that P should do what he did during D&P and the prince album, by releasing two singles. One aimed at the pop or adult contemporary stations. "Call My Name", while not a favorite of mine from the album (to me it sounds like waaaaay too many other Prince ballads), could definitely get some airplay on R&B stations, while "A Million Days" would definitely work on the "Mix" type stations. All depends on what P and Sony decide to do.

definitely needs to do a double a-side promotion, a la "The Holy River/Somebody's Somebody" with "A Million Days/Call My Name"

if this is really a comeback, then pop/rock radio won't wait around for the 3rd single to show interest. they'll have moved on if there's nothing for them to put on the air. and "Musicology" single, even with as much crossover potential as it's got, isn't doing it.

musicology still has a ways to go,,, its just really getting started... and you aint gonna get another single if you dont support this one! so go vote for it at MTV.com and call your local radio stations!!

that said...
a million days will be the next pop single and call my name will be the next r&b single...

then based on those it will be decided as to what to do next...

More than likely it will be the next single since it's mentioned on the sticker on the CD cover.I got this pic from Housequake:

Damn, that sucks. I love the song, but I think Prince really needed to release an upbeat pop song to build some momentum for this album.

I would've been more than happy with ICPC (my fav song on here), A Million Days or Cinnamon Girl as the next single.

Musiclogy is probably the most upbet track on the album. I think he should attack the R&B charts with "Call My Name" It's a truely beautiful song. When it comes down to it, the whole damn album is off the hook. So whatever he puts out will be a HIT!!

GrayKing - you might be right, there.

As much as I love 'Call My Name', IMO it's a better strategy to plug the new album with a catchy, up-tempo song as the lead and second singles, followed by something more chilled (i.e. Call My Name or Dear Mr.Man).

My Musicology single wish list would be:

1. Musicology
2. Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance
3. Call My Name
4. What Do U Want Me 2 Do?
5. Dear Mr.Man

An upbeat party track to get things swinging; a funky-@ssed tune to follow (God, if ICPC came on in a club I'd go beserk! Imagine the remixes); a sweet, soulful ballad to whet the appetite; an absolute gem of a song showcasing Prince's brilliance (who ELSE could write WDUWM2D?) and an absolutely classic, 'Prince' song to finish.

I really, really could see Dear Mr. Man being an Xmas No 1. I imagine this sepia-tinged video, filmed in New York; Prince on the street, guitar in hand.

Right - time to take the medication lol

Yep, it looks like "Call My Name " is it. Today on the R&B radio airplay chart 3 spins are showing up for the song. Some station has already jumped on it.

For Prince to connect with a wider audience I believe he needs to put out songs like Cinnamon Girl, Call My Name, A Million Days(not to big on this one), What Do U Want Me 2 Do, and The Marrying Kind(though it's kinda short)

I think all other songs from the album that we enjoy as hardcore fans are for us only. Like I don't think Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance or Life 'O The Party would be radio friendly for the common person who just likes Prince, but doesn't follow what's going on with him.

That's why I believe like I wrote in an earlier post that he should release 2 single, one for the Popcrowd and one for the R&B crowd.

FROM GERMANY

Actually, this is correct...

Having never heard "Musicology" on the radio over here, it was to my utter surprise to have heard "CALL MY NAME" on HR3 yesterday afternoon.
The DJ was excited to announce that "this was the current single from Prince." He also added that 'Musicology' would be released next Monday, 19.04 (Tuesdays is the norm in the US?) and that their evening show "Madhouse" (strange, eh?) would air the album in it's entirety starting at 20:00.

I must admit that I was kind of disappointed by the release of a slow jam, as many of you are, but it is beginning to seem as though Prince can do no wrong as of late.

PS. I haven't heard one of his new songs on the radio since.....
