Is there really anything new on Musicology?

When I first played Musicology at home, my wife asked if we could listen to something other than Prince. Of course, I pointed out that she hadn't heard this album, and she had no idea what it sounded like. Her response was that it sounded like any other Prince album.

Since then, I've been listening to the album through a different 'filter' - is there anything on Musicology that I haven't heard before in one form or another? It's a very solid album, and very fun to listen to - I still listen to it a lot - but is there anything Prince hasn't done before?

I wonder if Prince made this album to sound like the Prince everyone knows and loves, as if to say "I haven't gone anywhere".

Thoughts?

It sounds like stuff he's been doing since the late 90's, and most certainly not in a good way. Nothing new here at all. He's still in the same hole.

It could be that Prince is out of fresh ideas and has been for a decade or more. It happens to the best of them (i.e. Sly, Stevie, The Stones, McCartney, Springsteen) However, it's cool with me because he's really got nothing left to prove musically IMO.

Sad to say, but there really aren't any new sounds on Musicology . . . Having said that, they are great songs ('cept for LOTP).

Someone who has only heard PR or 1999 will not recognize any repeating themes, though. I agree that this is targeted toward the mainstream, whereas TRC was aimed and the true fans . . .

Well, with the way it's titled Musicology, and the fact that Prince has said that it's an album meant to accompany the concert and show everyone that "school's in session", I think it's meant to sound like a celebration of all the styles Prince has mastered.

I love it. It's like a mix of all things Princely with a modern edge of mature relationship issues and political awareness.

some people obviously don't know what the "ology" in "music" means. Of course it sounds like "all" the other recordings from the past. I thought that was the "PURPOSE."

I've been here since, the late 90's? Wow, thanks for making me aware.
