I went to see Prince last month at the Staples Center and as usual, it was a great show. It was the eleventh time I had seen Prince live. Watching Prince is always an experience and being a musician myself, he's someone to take notes from and study. As Prince played at Staples, doing his "hits", it came to me how glad I was to have seen Prince when he was raw and polishing his act. When the songs were brand new. The first time I saw Prince in concert was at the Santa Monica Civic on his Controversy tour. Then twice on his 1999 tour. Then twice again during the Purple Rain tour. And so on and so on. Seeing Prince do "When Doves Cry" and "1999" live when they were his current hits compared to seeing him do them now is well...different. I'm happy for Prince that there is still an audience there who loves him. And well they should. Personally, I would have loved for Prince to tour off of his new album and not made it a "hits" tour, but I understand his doing this. Just for the people that were fortunate enough to had seen Prince when he was "His Royal Badness" in his purple trench coat and the "rude boy" buttons, we were lucky indeed.

the shear energy and intensity are gone. Too bad he's become a "follower" of a religion. I always felt that Lovesexy was breaking new ground beyond and above the established religions.

Too bad he's become a follower...Too bad he's become a follower...Too bad he's become a follower...he has been on a path for well over 20 years...I hope I'm not alone when I say that Prince is and has always been religious. You don't come up w/those lyrics unless you've had a foundation. Similar to Marvin Gaye, Al Green, etc. And Lovesexy was probably his most religious and personal disc...and he put that out because he didn't like the negativity of the Black Album (I still think he pulled it cuz it sucked...)

well, as someone who's seen shows 'back in the day' and today, i can say prince has not performed this well since 1988. i don't hear a vegas-y thing going on. i hear a man making fresh bread out of stale dough. i know the kinds of performances you're talking about and yeah, they had a different groove to them. the way his aftershows are now is the way the whole live thing was then.

personally, i think this hits tour is a way for prince to re-introduce himself to the masses and make some money for future independent work. sometimes you've gotta please the masses to have the funds to afford freedom. if this album is a hit with the general public, i don't doubt we'll see a large scale musicology material tour...perhaps a second leg with an all new set list. if the album doesn't do well, he'll probably go on an independent small club tour a la one night alone.

either way, the man has obviously found a new muse because the intensity with which he's been performing so far is unmatched in recent years. i don't miss the 'old days' at all. well...not much, anyway wink

I don't hear the vegas thing either...I heard it in '94 in WA and I loved him for doing that...and especially because the entire audience was silent. I tell ya, that is one sexy MF.

I saw him at Staples and I just loved the fact that he was sharing w/his band. And the fact that he did "Let's Work"....I'd never heard it and that made my night...cuz that bass line it tuff!

He puts on a helluva show...and yall keep seeming to not mention that he IS 45 years old. Don't know 'bout you, but he's in much better shape than me!

I didn't go to my first Prince concert until 1988,but I would have killed to have seen him in the early 80s,before he became a superstar. From listening to the boots of these shows,I really missed alot! One of the Controversy shows is just outrageous...he was so raw back then!!

He's one of those artists that has such a large catalog that he won't be able to please everybody at once. Not possible. Even if/when he strikes a nice balance it's not going to be to the liking of every fan.

True that, Supernova. When I was walking to may car after the Raleigh show, I was reflecting on everything mentioned in this thread, especially the first time I saw him in 1981 at the Dorton Arena, which was about a 15 minute walk from The RBC Center. As I watched him on stage during the Controversy Tour, I knew then that he was something special, eventhough there was only about 3k peps there. The 2 1/2 Musicology concert seemed like 30 minutes to me because the 20 to 25 songs he performed where just a scratch on his catalog. Too much music to make everybody happy...

I would love to have gone to any of the concerts from Prince's beginning through the "Purple Rain" tour. I live in Mississippi and he only came here once in 1980 when he was on tour with Rick James. That would have been a show from hell because Rick James is my second favorite artist. I was only in the sixth grade back then and begged my family members to take me. Prince audiences back in the day, before "Purple Rain", were 99% black and I am white. That never mattered to me though because I have always hung with the blacks and the blacks have always considered me as one of them. My family refused to take me though.

When Prince finally came back, it was the 1997 "Jam Of The Year" tour. Thank god I got to see him before he became a Jehovah's Witness. I went to it and thoroughly enjoyed it but I know it was not a third as good as the tours back in the day before "Purple Rain". After that, he changed his style and started adding all this damn psychadelic and jazz stuff. Every album since then, I have to listen to it over and over before I like it. He has definitely challenged my taste. I finally have learned to love them all but there is nothing like the synthesized jams he did from "Dirty Mind" through "Purple Rain".

I am going to "Musicology" in Bosier City, LA in a few weeks. I know I'm going to have a great time but I know it won't be as good a time as I could have had back in the day!

i agree with many that it's time to promote musicology a little more and i think by taking out some of the "obscure" not prince songs you could easily fit in new music not heard live before for the most part and still have a greatest hits package. Below is the most recent set list from Staples in L.A. I've added in my idea for songs in place of what is currently being played in that spot...I think it works but would welcome other suggestions of course;

musicology
lets go crazy
I would die 4 u
when doves cry (at least 2 verses?)
baby i'm a star
call my name (shhh)
dmsr
love bizarre
million days (i feel 4 u)
controversy/housequake
God (instrumental)

Acoustic set
Little red corvette
Cream
Rasberry Beret
what do you want me to do (jailhouse rock/telemarketer blues)
alphabet st. (bluesy version)/12:01 (shortened up but left in for fun)
adore
dear mr. man
reflection
7

back w/full band
SOTT
Cinamon Girl
Let's Work
U got the Look
Life of the Party
Illusion, Coma (whole lotta love)
Kiss
take me w/U

encore;
The Beautiful Ones
If I was the Man in your life (nothing compares 2 u)
Purple Rain

Whatcha all think? Brings 8 of the 12 tracks from Musicology into the fold instead of 3 or 4 at the most and doesn't lose any of the "Hit's" feel or promise of the show's intention.

I like that setlist. I would have liked to have heard him do more Musicology songs, especially Call My Name, but what he sang was good enough for me. He rocked it hard in L.A. and it has easily been the biggest thing for me this year.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I agree but he needs a hit album to pull off the new stuff. Is it really a hit? Not from radio play. U2 and Springsteen had hit albums last time they toured so they could play new and old stuff and everyone knew the songs and was ready for them.

Time has passed and 1999 and some of the hits will never regain their freshness, but his current version of DMSR is surprisingly funky even with real horns..

Prince hasn't had that many black fans in his audience in years. What happened?

I saw him at the Staples center a week ago in LA, it was a great show, hes definately giving it his best, ive never seen a performer work so hard, he gives you his all, and thats all you can ask.
as far as Las Vegasy, i kinda agree, but i know a lot of the younger crowd and the non-hard core fans like my girlfriend would probably not like, or get into something more experimental or jazzy or off the mainstream hits they know and love.
The main thing i got from this show, which will probably be my last, is that he's getting old, im getting old, and this kinda show cant happen to much more, it'll kill the little guy! and finish off whatever hearing i got left, i was deaf for 20 minutes after the show!
great show, he had a lot class.
im glad he played mostly hits, i loved DMSR. and Maceo kicked ass! im gonna buy some of his stuff, man i admire this guy, he played hiss ass off!,...so if maceo can still be playing this good, i guess the little guy can too, for some time to come.

I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO CATCH PRINCE FIRST TOURS (CONTROVERSY, 1999, PURPLE RAIN, AND PARADE). I HAVEN'T SEEN HIS RECENT TOURS, BUT I WILL BE AT MUSICOLOGY
JUNE 20TH. WHEN I FIRST SAW PRINCE IT WAS THE CONTROVERSY TOUR AND HE CAME OUT SINGING SEXUALITY EVERYBODY AT JOE LOUIS ARENA LOST THEIR MIND! IT WAS THE BEST!!
AND TO SEE HIM IN CONCERT WITH VANITY 6 AND THE TIME AT THE MASONIC TEMPLE
(HE DID 6 SHOWS THAT WEEK AT 7P.M. & MIDNIGHT SHOWS) GOD IS GOOD, GOD IS GREAT!
I REALLY DON'T FEEL BAD FOR NOT SEEING HIS CURRENT SHOWS, BECAUSE I KNOW WHAT HE
IS CAPABLE OF DOING LIVE. AND I'M SURE THAT I GOT MORE BANG AT THE BACK IN THE DAY SHOWS THEN WHAT HE WILL DO NOW. TO SEE HIM PERFORM DARLING NIKI LIVE AT THE HEIGHT OF PURPLE RAIN, ALL I CAN SAY IS HA HA HA, I SAW IT, I SAW IT nutty. I DON'T MEAN TO RUB IT IN, BUT IT WAS ON & POPPIN BACK THEN! lol thumbs up! bow
I'M NOT SHOUTING, JEEZ!
