I was listening to TGE las night

I was listening to the Gold Experience last night for the 1st time in a few months and it hit me how GREAT this album is..it's like "my" perfect Prince album...great guitar,,great ballads & lots of Prince screams! (love when he screams on songs) and i was thinking what a shame at the time of the album there was so much crap going on that it stopped it from being a huge hit (altho it debut'd at #6) i think this album is one of his classics and is the "Purple Rain" of the 90's
Check it out ...Shiny Toy Guns R gonna blowup VERY soon and bring melody back to music..you heard it here 1st! http://www.myspacecomment...theone.mp3

Gold Experience is one of the most incredible Prince albums I've ever heard.

A lot of fans don't like that it has such slick production, but I think that fits the theme of it being like the musical equivalent of gold. It sounds so musically rich as a result, so it works.

This album has got some of the most consistently great songs of any Prince album too.

You've got the attitude filled songs like Pussy Control and Billy Jack Bitch, energetic dance songs like Endorphinmachine, Now, and 319, addictive pop like Dolphin, wise songs like Shy, emotional ballads like I Hate U, songs with absolutely jaw dropping guitar like Shhh and Gold, a feeling of Princely sensuality all over and just such a cohesive flow to the album altogether.

Gold is also also one of the most stunning closers to an album that I've ever heard.

The only downside to me are the segues, but they're short and easily skipped.

great analysis..i think if the cd was released when TMBGITW was released it would have been a major seller..the only faults i have with it are minor...1 the segues as you mentioned & 2.i'm not crazy about the album version of TMBGITW compared to the single..i remember reading Prince had high hopes for this album he said it would be he most popular cd ever & sit should have,,,i wonder if they will ever bring back since its out of print

You're dead on there.

The album version of TMBGITW is too noisy and cluttered sounding, and the segues were unnecessary.

The segues aren't that bad - they add a little bit of fun to the CD. I don't think they're as bad as, say, the poem intros on Come or the Darth Vader on TRC.

Gold is indeed a classic . . .

I agree that The Gold Experience was the Purple Rain of the 90's. Even the whole attitude/creativity of Prince was as fierce as it was in '84. Those Glam Slam gigs were the stuff of legend and are on par to to greatness of Prince at 1st Ave in the 80's.

Very well said, though I don't mind the segues, they're kinda fun IMHO.

I like the segue that comes before Now, mentioning all the old dance songs like Housequake, then the way it goes "...but that was then, this is" then it kicks into the opening of Prince yelling "NOW!".

Good stuff.

I don't mind most of them all that much, but as a small preference I would've liked if they weren't there.

The only one that kinda irritates me is the 40 second long one that comes before Gold. A little much.

I was reflecting on this album myself and all of its classic tracks that weren't necessarily "maintstream", but this album definitely stands the test of time. Something came to mind. This was written the same time approx that 'What's My Name' was written. In that song he says, "Take this bass, I can't play it. It only makes me wish for the way things use to be." And I realized that while the Purple Rain era was kind of the 'Good Old Days' as they say, so was the Gold Exprience era. Prince was in that 'I don't give fuck' mode, he had a fucking kick ass album. Mayte and he looked great together and he Tommy Barbarella and Michael B were the best incarnation of the NPG IMO.

If you think about it, this is when Prince was even cooler than Purple Rain. Just one orger's feeling. How great a song is Endorphinemachine? Remember the 10,000 magazine? The Ride? The Soul Train appearance from that year? 1995 ruled! nana

TGE would be perfect for me if I could change the following: Keep Endorphinemachine the way it was and LOSE the cowbell, replace We March with Days of Wild and the single version of TMBGITW. Then this would be one of my favorites.

I actually don't mind them at all, and feel that as bad as segues get, on TGE they seem to fit in because they are worked in so well and the voice is no where near as annoying as the "operator" on TRC- had 2 get used 2 that 1.

His most consistant album of the 90s. Though if it were released just after the name change thing and TMBGITW it might have sold more and kept him in the spotlight. By mid '95 (I think that's when it was officially released??) people were starting to think of Prince as a has been.
