isn't it amazing how much musicial ignorance there is?

im talking about anytime i mention prince or any other musicial artist who isn't the favour of the month in the charts, you get some dumbass putdown along the lines of " you dont like him, do you?" or" what, that has been" or the witty " oh, he's gay" mad
...
...i am not saying i have superior music taste( ok, i have) but come on, it doesn't take much to work out what is true talent and what is crap. im not talking about teenagers here, you can forgive them for having a crap taste in music with all those hormones flying around, no im talking about adults who think britney spears is a musicial genius, who play celion dion full blast all day long next door uzi who think westlife are better than the beatles eek who think outkast are original missile.....sorry im lost for words now zipped

Well yeah, but Outkast ARE original. Sure, the Prince influence is undeniably strong, but they're still their own sound.

To say they're not original would be like saying Prince isn't an original because he borrows from Sly and James.

My answer to anyone who says that Prince is a has been is, put him on the stage with anyone and he will rein supreme. There is no one that I know of that can touch him on the stage and in the studio.

totally agree with u my scottish friend, but , u have to realise that most of the general public know shit about music, most couldn't tell u the difference between real drums and drum machine, plus prince doesnt exactly promote himself as being a total genius. Over the past few years his image has depleted among the general public due to silly attempts at being commercial and just looking like Craig David. IMO all those ballad single releases should have stopped with TMBGITW i mean releasing IH8U and then Betcha By Golly Wow then Somebodys Somebody then Holy River then The ONe then the Greatest Romance. Thats Seven ballads in a row. Get a Grip , that ruined his image in the 90s, where he should have continued to do what he is only picking up on now, i.e. releasing a Funk Song, a Rock Song, A love song, An RNB song etc! Its his own fault really that attitudes towards him have changed!

Im praying that this is a turnaround and that Musicology will at least attempt to go back to the 80s style where everyone was desperate to find out what he was gonna do next!

Around my way, ive heard talk about "Prince's new single" and "Oh, its really good, have u got the album" from people that dont even like prince!

NOWS THE TIME!!!!

I agree 100%. Those were dark days. I didn't care about his symbol, I didn't care about Slave written on his face. No one cared about his personal beef with Warner Bros, nobody but him that is .He got way off the track and even I was not liking Prince, but I hung out and waited. I knew the evil spell was going away when he admitted his name is PRINCE (and he is funky) once and for all.

There is a lot of ignorance in the music biz, but we Prince fans see things through rose-tinted glasses . . .

Some things are painfully obvious, to all music lovers, such as:

- Britney Spears cannot sing. She sells records because of sex appeal and imaging/marketing. We will never hear her sing acapella or live, at least not an entire concert. It's awful.

- Country artists are very successful - there is no arguing that, and most of them sound very good. BUT, they can churn out album-after-album because very few of them write their own songs. They pick and choose, pay for them, and then record them. That is how they are so prolific. Again, like I said, most of them are great singers . . .

- There are certain musicians who negatively transcend music into pop-celebrity status. 2 examples of this are Lenny Kravitz and Sheryl Crow. They started out as musicians but somehow the "celebrity" took over and the music suffered . . . granted, I am still a fan of both . . . go figure . . . but if you spend more time in photo shoots that you do performing/writing/touring then there's a problem!

- Then comes us Orgers. We elevate Prince to God-like status and then are disappointed when we don't like his latest release. We need to step outside of our bias and judge the music on its merits. THEN we'd see that the reason he's been dissed this past decade is because the music is often subpar. Can you honestly say that you'd buy NPS as a gift for someone? Or recommend it? For most of us, it's a guilty pleasure at best . . .

I'm pretty open to listen to ALL kinds of music, but there are just limits to what I'll actually purchase. Last year, on a trip back from Cedar Pointe (an amusement park), we had 2 teenagers in control of the radio. They played TATU and Eminem, and it was enjoyable! I appreciated the different music . . .

Now, if they would've tried to put Britney on, we'd have a problem . . .

I Totally Agree. It's not about Talent. It's about numbers and what's Hot! Well, that's Hollywood ya know being IN or COOl. Doing what is HOT! This doesn't mean it's SPECTACTULAR . Look at Martha Wash....It's raining Men. It's just about a Look or Image. It's kinda Stupid ya Know. And the Calliber of Musicians well do people or kids Appreciate Musicians Talent or just what is Number 1 one MTv and who has the best Clothes? It is about Vanity ya know. I feel it is so Much More..I feel it is Talent that Counts and This is what has Kept PRINce so POPULar or Around for so Long. Prince has Talent. This is His Sexiest Feature. The fact that he is a Musical Genius that can Write songs about Anything and they Sell millions. This Turns me on like Wildfire ...his talent..His Words..his Music...He has it! God, Prince did ya Ever Think somebody would just have so much Beauty to say about ya? Alot of Times People Tried to Show Prince in a Passive or Disparraging Light and ya Know what? Well, it will Never work cause his fans will Always,Always deem him the Best ever. Doesn't ever Matter ya know. He will be Spoiled with his Fans Forever...I know I am Not alone in Saying that his Fans will Stroke his EGO Forever. His fans will keep him Young and Viable.... It will always be that. We Love him . He is The Star and the DIVa and Should be.. He is TALENT! What Prince has Created for us Girls and Boys well it has brought us so Much Joy and many Hrs of Happiness. His fans will Always be there for him.. Throughout theYears Loyal Forever..

It's highly ironic that in a thread bemoaning the state of musical ignorance in the world, you go on to say that Outkast isn't original.

Why is it that every time someone reveals their Prince influence so many people on here are so quick to say that they are a Prince wanna-be? It's so silly.

The Love Below is the most original album I've heard in a decade at least. It sounds like absolutely nothing else that came out last year...or in the last 10 years. It also sounds completely different than anything Prince has put out in ages.

Don't get me wrong, I LOOOOVE Prince -- but I just find it so silly to immediately put every artist who was influenced by Prince in the category of "Prince wannabe."

Kids are open to older music,it just has to presented to them.At least mtv in the 80's showed a variety of bands(good & bad)Hell.I working out at the gym listening to a band called "UFO"-strangers in the night(live).Great 70's hard rock band, and top notch geetar (played by michael schenker)When I was done this older dude, about 60 something, comes up asking "who was that","it was amazing",etc, and asked who it was.Very cool when I think about it.And the guy bought some UFO/schenker cd's that he never would have heard on the radio.I felt PROUD!
