Where did you read that? UPTOWN?

I can't imagine that he recorded it 45 times. There are only 24 tracks on many tape machines. I guess he could have used a 48 track machine, but still... 45 times!

How can you be sure?

I am not debating the whole 45 voice thing, but a 24 track machine doesn't have to mean only 24 parts. Couldn't he simply have recorded multiple vocals on the same track?

Prince spent five months in the studio before he released "For You."
Except Chris Moon's lyrics for "Soft and Wet" everything is done by Prince. Songs, music, arrangement, production, right down to the cover of the LP which is designed by Prince. He played 27 instruments on the album and sang all the voices. On the first track, "For You", he made a "choir" by recording the backing vocals 45 times, sung by himself every single time.
