How was it in school probably being the only 1 diggin Prince? How did it feel bein the funkiest classmate in the room?

I remember tryin 2 get my friends 2 listen 2 Diamonds & Pearls in the 5th grade...they didnt get it much...but older people who heard me playin it loud in my room used 2 say, "what u doin playing that?! Hey Cyen (my mom) your son be playin some good shit in there!"

Prince is cool, and it's more the music for me lol .

It was even like that when I was in school...I remember being high school (9th) talking about Prince before Purple Rain came out and getting ignored. LOL. Then as soon as the movie and album came out it seemed like EVERYONE was a Prince fan. Then it died off again.

At school, none of my mates were into Prince and I remember mentioning he was cool and getting slagged for days so I kept my mouth shut.

But there was this guy, about 3 years older than me, and he saw me putting a copy of dirty mind into my walkman. Turned out he was a prince nut, and he hung around the music room at lunchtime and just played all sorts. Asked me to check out a few covers him and his mates were messing around on. He played ICNTTPOYM, and he played the solo on guitar, and you could tell he was just totally wanting to be Prince, but it was pretty cool.

Anyway, the point is he played it at a gig organised by the school, battle of the bands type crap, and when he played the solo, everyone went nuts. Though it turns out because they thought he wrote it. Out of 400 people or so, not one knew it was a Prince song. He also covered Pastime Paradise by Stevie Wonder, and they asked if he wrote the lyrics over the beat to Gangstas Paradise

Ever since then, I just ignored everyone and talked about Prince constantly, because the vast majority of people had no fucking clue about music, and liked Happy Hardcore.

I'm a Prince fam unda 20(hell I ayn even 16 yet-will be 2005) Newayz. I LOVE Prince. & where I live & go 2 school @ pplz think I'm crazy(the 1s that know-friends). The 1st time I brought him up they be like "the freak?" & etc. shit. I dun like 2day's music esp. in rap/hip hop(Lil Jon as an example) I know sum my friends probably think I've abandoned that genre but the thing is Prince touches them 2 in many of his songs. I dun see how I'm the weird 1 & they like Lil Jon & eventho Outkast are sum type like Prince(dun see it unless they talkin' 'bout how they dress-Andre 3000) I h8 that song 'Roses' of theirs. They lost me afda 'The Way You Move','Hey Ya',& 'I Can't Wait'. The typa R/HH I like is ol'skoo type & a few new 1s(J-Kwon) but that's mainly it. I have majority ol'skoo songs on my puta than new skoo. I'm proud of my collection of it & my growing Prince songs. The funny thing is they thought Prince wuz all skin 'n bones but when I showed them pix from the simulcast(Oh how they changed!-shallow heffas!) Now a few of'em talka'bout him but mainly his body not music. My best friend is the only that talks albout him @ the same level as I do. She loves that song 'D&P'. So she be the only 1 I'd talk 2 about him. Some boys that'd say he gay & mess like that are only haters. Cuz they know they ayn got half da balls 2 be wild as Prince rock those heels like he do. Cuz they dun got the body 4 2 wear his past clothing(& bet couldn't even afford it). Only a man witta shape like Prince can wear that cuz he got curves in all the right places & cute ass...I dun like flat ass brothas-uh uh. But back 2 his music..yes Prince is a lot betta than 2day's type & thanx 2 him I stay @ a manageable stress level & I'm able 2 draw even betta as I listen 2 his songs. Like I had said b4 in anotha post if I eva find myself in the far future accepting an award 4 my drawing I would defintely giva shout out 2 Prince. & yea if the pplz aroun'cha dun like Prince hey it's mo' music 4 ya like sum1 said earlia. The thing is I always felt outta place I neva felt like the age of my school peers, ofthen wish I grew up in the '80s instead(not down wit the fashion) but the time periods seems so koo. I hope Prince still be doin' his thang 'round Summer 2007.

well i became a prince fan when i was in 8th grade around the time "the most beautiful girl in the world" came out. one of my friends and I convinced our moms to get the triple disc of emancipation and we would listen to it all the time. we played Purple Rain almost everyday. we really didn't care what out other friends said about it, we just liked him and the way he moved.
i even broke the purple rain tape in the vcr because i had played it so much and my mom made me replace it.

now that i'm 21 and in college, most of my friends are into Kanye West and Twista, and they are okay, but i appreciate good music. i mostly listen to oldies music anyway because it makes me feel good.

I get tired of hearing about cars and jewelry and looking at half naked women in videos all the time. Prince's music feeds my soul and thats what I need other than some clubbin music to play with the windows down when i go out.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I first heard an entire P album when I was 12 years old. We had a weird P.E. session and walked around the gym multiple times while listening to music. Well some kid brought 1999 in (it was new at the time) and we listened to all of it while we walked around and around. Before that I had only heard the singles on the radio. By the time I was 17 I had all the albums (Sign o the times was new then) and Prince was my favorite artist.

[EDIT]

By the way the FYE music store at my local mall had a new copy of Emancipation for $9.99. I was so shocked that such an excellent album with a three hour playing time could be so cheap.

My first exposure to Prince was around 5th-6th grade in 1995. Ever since I have been a huge fan. All throughout school all I ever heard was "Prince is a Freak" "Is he gay? Come on, just cuz he's married doesn't mean he isn't gay." or the worst "Why do you like him?" and they can't seem to accept an answer of "I like his music cuz its funky." I hardly ever question people as to why they like someone's music, let alone question their answer. Now that I'm 20 and in college, I find more people who enjoy his music, or at least can stand him.
You would think that with all the negativity I get for being a Prince fan that I would keep it closeted, but I don't. I wear plenty of T-shirts, have some posters, listen to the music all the time, and make sure its something that people know about me soon after we meet. It has become just another of the countless things which makes me "different" from others, and I feel special for enjoying an artist that noone else my age gives the time of day to.

I've been a Prince fan since I was 15 years old, and I'd always catch shit for it at school. Friends would think that he wasn't talented, which obviously isn't the case.

I'm 19 years old now, and I have found people who have a passing interest in Prince, but I'm the only Prince fan that I know of in concrete reality. It's lonely sometimes lol , but I feel like his music is my treasure no one else around me knows about.

its a shame that when you are young, and you are a die hard prince fan, that you are critcized for it by your peers. Kids can be cruel, but if your devotion to prince and his music is real, then it doesn't matter who thinks P is whack, who isn't...all that matters is P and how he influences you.

I know one thing, everytime I hear "Somebody's Somebody" it reminds me of middle school, I think thats a good memory.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

sounds like you and I are very close in age. Perhaps the same age. Anyway I been rockin to Prince since I was in diapers! No one really ever understood my love for him and his music. Strangely though now everyone is callling me up and asking me to make them cds of all his music. I think it was good for me being a Prince fan all through school because it showcased my individuality in a place where everyone else was listening to the same thing.

I've been a fan for over 4 years now, and have been bullyed 4 being a PRINCE fan/fam lol, i never really told my friends at school, untill about a year ago.

My really close friends, respect that i listen 2 PRINCE, they can listen 2 him, but dont hear what i do, other friends call me gay, or PRINCE gay, they cant just accept that i listen 2 him, they always compare him to MJ, which i can sorta understand.
When i ask them if they wanna listen 2 PRINCE, they will laugh in my face and tell me 2 get lost, just becasue the song's artist is PRINCE, they wont listen to it, 1 friend i got him 2 listen 2 Endorphine Machine and he really enjoyed it, untill i said it was PRINCE, which is sorta hard 2 get around, y wouldn't U listen 2 good music if its by sum 1 who U cant accept?
If U cant accept the artist they at lest accept the music!!!!!

Hi everyone - my name is Matt, I'm a long time lurker, first time poster.

Prince has been played in my house for a long as I can remember, my parents have been into Prince since Dirty Mind (I try not to think about what this means they've been getting up to over the last two decades :S) and I've always been around his music.

There was the self concious time at school when I was around 13/14 when addmitting to enjoying an artist as 'fruity' as Prince would be an offence punishable by extreme wedgie and immediate social outcasting. Luckily, that never happened and I kinda forgot about Prince for a while untill about 4 years ago (in my LOOK AT ME - I LIKE DIFFERENT MUSIC AND WEAR BLACK!' period), picked up a copy of 1999 and was hooked again.

Now that I actually listen to music I've found that a well of interesting and experimental compostions that are unlike anything else.

Which is cool wink

As a Drummer friend of mine said - 'Prince is a proper musician'.

I know I'm too old 4 this thread but fuck it whatever.

I'm 34 been a P fan for over 20 years, been with my wife for 5 years (she is 25). And she refuses to admit she likes Prince. But when I play stuff I catch her tapping her foot or whatever, I say 'but i thought u didn't like Prince' she replies ' I forgot it was Prince'.

Still tapped her foot.

Everybody on this thread(includin' future posters & the whole site) that likes Prince are very special. & we all MOST DEFINTELY know what REAL music is. Otha pplz that dun undastand him or don't like him but like otha crap out there in the music biz have this sickness MUS(musically unintelligence syndrome) LoLz it's not exactly real but it's 1 the things we'd like 2 call them or would define pplz like that. I am proud 2 be a P fam esp. 4 my age group. It really is hard these days 2 admit 2 bein' a fam,but wheneva sum1 askes me "So,u like Prince?" I 4sho'lly tell'em wit my upmost pride. All of ya'll stories are real good 2. It's pitiful how most my friends are shallow & only like him 4 his body-girls side & the boys just h8 cuz they know they ayn got the ballz 2 do the things Prince has done & know it ayn all 'bout dressin' all gangsta-like 'n shit. This wuza good thread,I look 4ward 4 more good threads on this related topic.

Im 20 (21 April 26th) and back at school it was fucking cool diggin Prince even if i was the only 1. I grew up listening 2 Prince and ive always unashamedly been a fan, singing his songs in class (then getting thrown outta class 4 it confused) and even singing GOLD in the school talent show.

There were always ppl who liked a few Prince songs, no real hardcore fans like me that i knew of but ppl always asked me about him, so i was always talking 2 ppl him.

Nowadays its even cooler, cuz now that just about every1 who knows me knows I love Prince and that im also more expressive about it I find Prince fans coming outta the woodwork from all over the place.
Mainly these ppl are over 25, but recently ive met alotta ppl closer 2 my own age who respect Prince 4 his talent or are already starting 2 get in2 his music.
As soon as I get a sniff of a potential new Prince fan I buy 'em Purple Rain or SOTT.....cuz im such a nice guy. wink

I just asked my 7 year old this question.....
She said she feels "popular" other students are always asking her questions about him.....she diggs it.....ps, she says Prince is SO SEXY!!!!

She saw him at the regal cinema in Alhambra and was interviewed for tv,when she was asked what she thought about Prince, she basically said the same thing. She saw him live in Bakersfield the next day, and LOVED the whole show, she cant wait til he comes back to the Staples center.....

I'm 19. I was first exposed to Prince from watching Batman (I loved Partyman, but had no idea who it was)when I was 4, but I didn't start to like him until I watched Purple Rain with my best friend in the 10th grade.

It's weird being one of the only people my age that likes him. I'm slowly converting some of my friends tho. A few now own some of his albums. One guy was up until a short while ago strictly into hardcore goth and industrial, until I had him listen to Annie Christian. Now he's working on building up his own P. collection. smile
