Oooooh toughy!
I have to agree, the Rainbow Chilllen has more to it, the only detractor being that God Bob George voice, but oh well. But damn , I do love me some Lovesexy. Actually, I can't differentiate.....they BOTH win!

I like both of them albums too but I think TRC is a more consistent release as far as continuity...that BOB GEORGE voice can be irritating but the music is just awesome!

LOVESEXY-
Short, but sweet. I still have the original cd with only one track. Never bought a new one. If one takes away the racy cover art, the presentation of the disc is minimalistic, in proper Prince form. ('Sign O' The Times' had the best album art, in and out, as far as I'm concerned) The music definately takes me on a trip. Because I first bought it on vinyl, "Dance On" starts part two. It was always like two seperate discs to me. "disc one" started with a bang and then cooled off. "disc two" started with a boom and then intriqued. Then, I had to start over, playing "2" before "1". Then came the "I Wsh U Heaven" maxi-single, which is another story, since we are discussing the albums as a whole, right? THE RAINBOW CHILDREN- Long, but sweeter. I sent the downloaded version with downloaded cover art to my father, who is 834 years old, and he said to me (like most everyone here agrees) that it was hard to get through the segues, although the music itself was well above par. As a lifelong fan, I have grown to accept Prince's babble as part of the package (I often wonder if something is wrong when it isn't there!). I am not sure if it was the lack of truly great music from him since '97, or the fact that he finally said "fuck u" to the mainstream machine, but this disc really brought my jaw back to the floor. This, of course, is without really paying attention to the lyrics, which after awhile, sunk in. He is really serious about this new religion, isn't he? MUSICALLY- 'The Rainbow Children' LYRICALLY- 'Lovesexy' LOVESEXY wins because he created his own world with it. THE RAINBOW CHILDREN loses because he followed. THE RAINBOW CHILDREN wins because he flexed every musical muscle he has LOVESEXY loses because he was trying to get away from a certain genre PS. I HATE comparing albums. But, I love the interaction we can have because of it!!! "Whatever skin we're in
we all need 2 b friends" | |

The Rainbow Children is the winner hands down.
Even with the voice it is on a higher levek to me. The Voice to me adds to the record, it was not supposed to be a dance or even contemporary Lp in the first place. Prince was conveying his new message straight and to the point through music. What makes TRC even more powerful I think is the fact that it is uninhibited by potential for commercial sucess or should I say lack of commercial viability. This is one of the Prince LPs that I think Outcast was listening to when they were producing there LP. Lovesexy on the other hand would have been greater had it incorporated within it the Black Album. A "salvation and sin" so to speak. Prince accomplished this with TRC some 13 years later. and Musicology is still better than Lovesexy musically and listenability. And I would have said the same thing if they both came out at the same time. With the exception of 4 songs LOvesexy is just too damn jumbled

My vote is for Lovesexy. Sometimes I still can't decide if my Number 1 album is Purple Rain or LoveSexy.

I'm offended by the comparison. In fact, I'm sick to my stomach. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

They're not as different as one might think. I look at TRC as an extension of Lovesexy/The Black Album. It just took him 10+ years to get there. Like them or not they are both landmark albums but Lovesexy, like others have said, really needs the Black Album to complete it. My preference depends on my mood really.

U know..TRC and Lovesexy do have similarities....I just think that Prince was more focused musically on TRC even though the ideas on TRC(and LoveSexy for that matter) may have been a bit unfocused...I am very surprised by the number of fans that dis TRC...It shocks me because he was on a musical plateau...FAMILY NAME..I mean come on now!!! That song is one of his best EVER!

Ditto. Rainbow Children, Muse, Mellow, The Work, Everywhere, and Wedding Feast just irritated me to no end. Too bad too, cause Family Name, Digital Garden, Sensual Everafter, 1+1+1=3, Everlasting Now, She Loves Me 4 Me and Last December were all fantastic songs to me. So, Lovesexy is better to me hands down. I love almost the entire album. Lovesexy, for its pure message and studio genius.
Rainbow Children is slightly distorted by the message, but a strong album.

TRC.
I never really liked Lovesexy, not when it came out and still not 16 years later. I only like a few songs on that album, while I like almost everything on TRC. Musically it was a great return to form in my opinion, and I don't really mind the religious lyrics. If he hadn't used that "Darth Vader" voice, the album would have been perfect... RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

2 me this is like saying what's better..."Jughead" or the original no horns version of "Old Friends 4 Sale." Are you kidding me?? TRC is a fine album, take out Darth Vader's narration, and it's a mighty fine album. Lovsexy..is GROUNDBREAKING. Now..as far as the songs go. Who is going 2 take ANY ..I say ANY track off of TRC in place of Anna Stesia, When 2 R In Love, or Lovesexy??? How could U? Is "Everywhere" better than "I Wish U Heaven?" Hell NO!
Is the Wedding Feast better than "Positivity?" NO Is 1+1+1 better than "Dance On?" NO...Dance On is different. Since Lovesexy came out first..it does have a little advantage. "Family Name" is a great track, but we've heard that groove all over 70's music. Perhaps if U have no education on old school, it might sound fresh. "Everlasting Now" is a nice song...but has anybody heard the bass line in the Rod Temperton written final song (Burn This Disco Out) on MJ's OFF THE WALL? SAME BASS LINE. Now TRC has 2 b considered 1 of Prince's best albums from 1991 on, but the music isn't that original. Either Prince or some1 else has traveled down that road b4. The Jazz of the title track is a basic vibe from HUNDREDS of other songs. And the other poster who said "1+1+1=3" is a watered down version of "Erotic City." is pretty close 2 the point. And it doesn't even come close 2 EC. Now the only big advantage TRC has over Lovesexy is that there is no RAP. The rap on Alphabet St is somewhat embarrasing now. And that GOSH AWFUL Dog Barking sound Effect was damn lame on the tour, and on the rehersal of "Rebirth Of The Flesh.." Which wasn't on the album, but was rehearsed. "Last December" is another GEM off TRC, but would u take it over "EYE NO?"..probably not. They R both great albums, but Prince was much hungrier back then. TRC has its moments, but pales in comparison. Even if TRC came out in 1988, and Lovesexy in 2001, I'd still pick Lovesexy. 2 Bad the brain dead masses wouldn't make it a hit. 2 Bad Prince didn't realize how good Lovesexy was, and delay its release a year or so, and perhaps open it with Thieves In The Temple, 2 give it a big hit, and have it end with Anna Stesia..sort of a spirtual low at the start, and spirtual high at the end. That band was superior in each in every way, save 4 John Blackwell..who is a better drummer than Sheila..but sort of lacks her soul and presence. (Don't get me wrong..JB is INCREDIBLE..) ..but Oh well...

Gotta go with Lovesexy, because it's an album with a message clearly delivered in song. Prince seemed to just let it happen on Lovesexy.
TRC, while I like the album a lot (especially the "sound" of the album, which carried over into subsequent instrumental efforts), rams it up your a** with crazy narration that seems forced. I Love both of them. It's so Hard to Choose. Lovesexy but Rainbow Children is Really Great. Prince does Tend to Get Even More Amazing with Each New Effort. He is such a Genius that he has so Much To Offer and We Will Always Suckle that Honey so to Speak. He's Divinely Gifted and we as fans are Truly Lucky to actually have him Bestow the Musical Gift through his cds and concerts.

Did someone call me? j/k... DITTO! Lovesexy is the one! Prince took us on a spiritual journey with this one. TRC is good, but the religious overtones kinda hurt it for me. But let's not start the whole "Lovesexy is a religious album too" cause it's not. Huge difference between the two with where his honesty was coming from. Lovesexy came from his spirit, his heart... you felt what he was sayig if you "got it." TRC was coming from his mind... his newfound "knowledge." But it's still a good album, good music.
