As much as I'd like to hate it (we all know what Prince is capable of), I have to say that after letting it marinate for a few weeks, Musicology is a perfect pop album. He has lowered the bar somewhat but it's either that or go completely over people's heads. I think he has found a good middle ground.

this is such an eclectic collection of tracks. you know, since lovesexy every release has had some kind of musical theme. not since sign o' the times has a prince release been so all over the place, musically speaking. you've got funk, soul, rock, pop...whatever. it's a great summation of his career. i'm not mad about life o' the party but, other than that, every song is pretty strong. there is a spark of revived interest, it seems, in prince's atttude towards the music world. kind of like he knows its time for him to say something to the general public, rather than 'preaching to the choir'. look, its been a long while since i've been able to put a NEW prince cd on repeat for a few hours. probably not since 'the truth', actually. it's pretty exciting!

Somebody's Somebody & Holy River were good singles choices. I would have preferred Jam of The Year over Face Down. And why on earth overlook a song like The Love We Make.

I'm sure between the Musicology downloads over at NPGMC and the feedback from live performances of material from the release, he'll get this singles thing right this time around.

With Musicology as a lead, it's only uphill from there.

Don't forget why Prince chooses his singles though. It's not all about sales for him. The lead single for Prince always "symbolises" the general theme of that particular album. For example, Betcha By Golly Wow might not have been a good idea for the first single for Emancipation, but it was the song that P felt most expressed his love for Mayte...an important message for that era.

Same with Musicology, P is trying to remind people of the OLD SCHOOL. In fact, all the reports I've heard about the track on TV sad they like the song - it's different to what's on todays radio.

I think it's a grower.

Combined with other singles and videos (whch I'm excited about) this album could become a classic.
