Prince fans will always be divisive because... ....amazingly, Prince is the only thing that unites them.
In every other way they are different. Fans fall into two camps: 'the haters' - quite frankly, they are 'haters' of the 'non-haters', not Prince. They are usually articulate, culturally aware and see Prince as a critical aswell as cultural sensation. Prince's wide ranging and eclectic style of musiciansip and iconic status is what brought these people into the fold in the first place. Yet, when he falls short of this mark by making generic shite, they are extremely disapointed. This is why newer stuff is compared to old. Still, they remain fans because they have faith that Prince can regain the brilliance they once saw. He has certainly showed that he is capable of it. Finally, the 'non-haters' very obedience to all things Prince is a very affront to 'the haters' right to ask questions, be objective and to not conform. 'the non-haters' - Can't understand why anyone who doesn't praise Prince would take the time to come to this forum in the first place. Would disagree that they slavishly follow each new song with applause because, after all, they do actually like it, don't they? Probably, have less cultural influence and therefore have no point of reference. Michael Jackson is probably a fave too. Might be a little younger (but not as a rule). Musically pompous because they don't listen to Britney Spears but to a musicain that writes and plays his own songs. Point is, I think Prince isn't the source of conflict here. I think his fanbase come from two very opposite camps that are so diametrically opposed to one another that they'll never agree. | |
