Magnificent stronger than anything on Musicology?

“Magnificent” showcases Prince at the top of his game. While the Chocolate Invasion is above

average (I can’t say the same for Northside) it’s bogged down by four or five filler tracks and

the best tracks (Underneath the Cream, When I lay My Hands on You, The Dance, U Make My

Sun Shine, Sexme) lack the labored (perhaps to some, overly-labored) perfection and

cohesive popfunksparseness of most of Musicology. But, as has been said before, Musicology

lacks that instant classic song and memorizing hook. “Magnificent” is that song. What do

ya’ll think? And does anybody know the recording history of this track?

Musicology definitely lacks that one amazing five star song to me.

Purple Rain had the title track (my fav song of all time), When Doves Cry and Beautiful Ones, 1999 had Free and International Lover, Gold Experience had Gold, Rave had I Love U..., prince had 7, etc.

The closest Musicology comes to having a classic to me is Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance.

That's a ****1/2 star song to me.

Luckily, it makes up for this by having no real bad songs and many 3.5-4 quality songs.

I'm sorry but "Magnificent" is very weak- weaker than any of the Musicology songs.

I don't think it's even good enough for a spot on New Power Soul.

Sorry, Magnificent ain't that great, imo. Certainly isn't a 5 star classic. Personally, I'm glad this didn't make the album because it's just boring.

Hmmm... I beg to disagree. Magnificent is a wonderful track that I find bobbing my head, singing the chours and tapping my feet. I really think it should replace LOP. (Hell, Sex me/sex me not could replace LOP. ) Unfortunately it doesn't fit the over all sound of Musicology.

I must admit, i am quite confused on why it is not that great. To me, it is quite a tight joint. The lyrics make sense and actually convey emotion. The instruments complement each other and Prince's vocals really feel as if it is part of the song.

Magnificent is pretty decent, for a throwaway download. But that's exactly what it sounds like. A throwaway download, like all of the other throwaway downloads that he's put out: Decent, but you can understand why they don't get proper releases on albums.

two words:

FUCK NO.

Magnificent is a crappy leftover from Rave (note the slightly distorted vocal mix, a la Rave).

It's AVERAGE, at best.

Magnificent most definitely does not work on Musicology. The song is basically a key

board driven dance song that lacks the ology (any real overt relation to Sly/JB/Curtis/AG/Etc)

and light, airy, and accessible popfunk sparseness that provides the vision, weak as it is,

that unifies Musicology. However, I strongly disagree that Magnificent is a throwaway song on

par with Rave or, and this is just plain silly, anything on the horrible NPS. Magnificent would,

with a little more work (tightening up some of the transitions, adding a track or two, and a

solo or two), be comparable to the worst songs on 1999 which is to say the shit is hot and

representative of Prince at his dancehall strongest. Can’t believe ya’ll are sleeping on this

track. Really this song inspires instant movement, clocking you on the head with two distinctly

intertwined keyboard hooks. Slamming.

Magnificent SUCKS! I like the Musicology album as it is. If this song would have been on the album, I would have been very dissapointed. It's just boring, like he really felt the need to record something but had no inspiration or feel at all. 77 cents down the drain. Don't get me wrong, it's the only song out of all the downloads I don't like (plus a couple of the slaughterhouse album). But that don't mean it has to suck for all of us. If you enjoy it, good for you. Me, it just bores. neutral
