If You Still Don't Like The Musicology Album...

You just haven't played it loud enough!

After less than five days of listening to it, I have realised that its his best offering since Lovesexy. Its already classic Prince - its that good.

This guy is displaying the correct listening conditions for enjoying Musicology...

Musicology is another great album in the Prince legacy. nod

Other albums like Rave and TRC came close but got dragged down by unfortunate factors (a few plastic sounding songs on Rave, Darth Vader voice and some monotonous/dull jazzy songs in the first half of TRC).

I think some ppl can't get past the fact that Musicology isn't meant to be a sophisticated work of art.

It's a fun album that charmingly explores romantic, societal and political issues while showing ppl that Prince's talent as a great songwriter/musician hasn't been lost at all.

Well, everyone's different I guess, I don't care for the album that much myself.

If some folks don't like it, well they just don't like it - being a fan of a pop artists work doesn't really mean you have to like everything they put out.

Thinks about the thread entitled "if U don't like Musicology, there's something wrong with U".

demon Blasphemer! Musicology is another mix-and-match CD. There's no central theme! The personal yet universal message of Lovesexy is what makes it so powerful.

Not true. There is definitely a central theme to Musicology. It's NOT a mix & match CD.

In fact, Musicology has a very well-planned beginning, middle and end. The ending brings the entire work full-circle. It ends where it begins (thematically, not musically).

Listen to the lyrics and it will open up for you. There IS a 'personal yet universal message' in Musicology. The message is just as powerful as Lovesexy's message, but comparing the two is like comparing apples to oranges. Their goals are different.

Lovesexy is a mood piece and a trip to another world (perhaps heaven), whereas Musicology is a pop album with great pop songs. Still, Musicology definitely has a theme, deep messages and a well-planned structure.

I don't really get a theme for Musicology. I'm not hearing it. It's all over the place musically. A hodgepodge, like a mini-Sign o the Times (but with material not on par with SOTT). It's a good album, I like most of it alot, and it works well. I think the sequencing is pretty good. But I don't hear a theme.

Unless by Musicology he wants to touch on many types of different music, which he certainly does w/ this CD.

To me, Musicology is all about schooling ppl on the of art of good songwriting within various genres, while expressing an important message about the various societal, political, and relationship issues, and sometimes even exploring the way one relates to the other.

I love the way he wisely explored the way he has such a happy, loving marriage in a world that's so politically flawed in songs like Call My Name, or the way he instilled a meaningful message about society's perception of certain ethnicities post-911 in an uptempo rock song like Cinnamon Girl.

I also love the way the album opens with Musicology, a song about the joys of the feeling music used to give you, then ends with the very effective Reflection, a song all about gentle, sentimenal remembrance. It works very well.

I finally got time to download the album last weekend, and all I can say is I absolutely love it. I am diggin Cinnamon Girl, Illusion, Coma..., What Do U Want..., and Dear Mr Man the most. But the whole thing is the best thing P has produced since TGE imo. The only song that I am not THAT crazy about is Marrying Kind...but even that one is growing on me.
It just has a real positive feel to it and he's singing with passion again (something I don't think he's been doing for awhile).
I wasn't expecting much after reading some of the opinions on here...but all I can say is that I can't disagree more with those of you not diggin this music.

Finally, I have not been that into Prince's most recent stuff, Emancipation has its moments, but overall it has too much filler, NPS is simply mediocre...something I never thought I'd say about a Prince album, Rave was a mess, and TRC, I do like, but have a real hard time relating to it (as many of us did). I respect his need to sing about his new found religion, but just can't relate to The New Translation. This is the 1st P album in awhile that I am wanting to hear right after I just listened to it. I am not running to hit the Skip button or making my own CDR to make it listenable. Musicology joins my list of fave Prince albums at the moment.

Yay! It just keeps getting better too. My basic litmus tests: I'm obsessisvely listening to it, and my favorites/weak spots keep changing up on me, but for the first time in ages as a Prince fan, it has me reacting. Right now I'm loving Marrying Kind/Man in Ur Life and Million Days and they were my least favorite tracks at first.

If you can describe the physics behind making that possible, I'll be more than happy to make the attempt.

I'm so seeing where you're coming from, I'm like this too.

At first I thought songs like Cinnamon Girl, A Million Days and On the Couch were totally average, but then I listened to them more and ended up loving them.

I'm obsessively listening to it too, and constantly changing my mind about whether this or that song is a 4/5 song to me or a 4.5/5 song to me, etc.

It's great, it's instilled a strong reaction in me.

Well, though I like the CD, and I've been listening to it over and over, and Musicology, the song has grown on me a bit. I'm still not getting that unique excited feeling I normally get when I listen to a Prince CD/tape/album, like I have to listen to it all the time, something's missin' and I really can't explain what. Only one of the songs hit me right off, though it is simple musically, something about it is just different.

you know what... it's getting better. still getting better.... i'm liking it more on each listen.

tonight me and my roommate were jamming to it in my car while driving around, really listening loud, and it just seemed to click. even Life 'o' the Party, which i loathed, is now tolerable, and I actually kindof enjoy it as a fun, funky throwaway. And Reflection - superb.

The album is growing on me.

And so is the Chocolate Invasion and The Slaughterhouse. It goes to show you how much context means to music. As a scattered collection of random download track... eh. But put together as coherent albums, for some reason it connects much better for me.

I'm waiting to buy my copy, but why does Musicology need to have a theme for validation? There are novels AND short story collections, aren't there? There's Bitches Brew and Kind of Blue. There's Ulysses and Dubliners. There's 2112 and Moving Pictures.

Sure, a common thread provides all we need to tie things up in a pretty package. But it can as easily leave loose ends.
