"Cream" vs. "Musicology" If "Cream" can generate interest for "Diamonds and Pearls", I say that "Musicology" is more than enough to get people interested in the new album.
That was THE first time concerning Prince that I was like "damn, people like this song?" If someone tells me they liked the two ladies in it, I might understand. That was the first time I can think of that Prince got over. It was rather simplistic yet catchy tune, and you could tell a rather large production for back then as far as videos are concerned as well, but it didn't grab me. I've since gotten over it, and don't mind the song. It was still different from most people's idea of a pop song. But to this day, I never think to play it. "Musicology" on the other hand (the single), is a better song. The song is growing on me, but I still think he could have made this track better. Very repetitive, but there are other things that redeem it for me. P's vocals, and John Blackwell's playing. We've heard better when he plays it live. I don't think the same can be said for "Cream". It just doesn't translate that well over to a live format.

Some nice guitar riffs on that if i remember correctly, and here in Australia it went very well. I know that it was no1 on the radio station here.

Cream had an immediate, irresistable hook. It's such a great single.
Musicology's solid enough, but Cream kills it. I think Musicology as the first single was a big mistake. He should've picked a song with more of a hook to start his comeback. A Million Days or Illusion would've been better choices imo. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I do miss those riffs i mentioned tho...and him being raunchy in the vid with the dancer...Gett Off also had great catchy riffs on the MTV Awards he did...1991 I think?

Some quick, catchy guitar work was plastered all over "Cream" so it probably had that hook that made it a success in the eyes of many that weren't into P. It didn't have the Jazzy flavour to it that Musicology has, so it was more radio friendly, yet at the same time bordered a little on pop and something different that wasn't being played (like most of his back catalogue that hit radio since he first started). It was very quick and smooth....almost like P sat down and was forced to pknock out a hit for the next day. It could get on your nerves after a while tho...if you listened 2 it a lot....but i guess that's the case iwth most good and catchy songs.

The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

As for "Musicology" being a good choice 4 the first single.....well for starters, P has released some utter shite as we all know 4 singles.....esspecially follow up singles.....so let's pray he makes a good decision on the next one. This wasn't a bad choice 4 the first 1, though almost anything P makes could do just as well commercially as "Mucicology" if he gave it the push that "Musicology" has received 4rom him with all the shows, tour, and label. Also, I have heard (or more like read) that the first single is not as important as the second and then third.

Well, I never much cared for "Cream".Never could figure out why people loved it so. Sounds like a half-baked cover of T-Rex's "(Bang a Gong) Get It On". Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

I've only been here a short while, but i've been surprised at the grief that Cream has got from some - that's fair enough of course, just surprised me. I think it's one of his better songs of the 90s, period.

Creams a great little track , nothing groundbreaking but so what , its catchy as hell,
Musicologys growing on me but its not as good as Cream. Nver agreed with that "whereas you cannot listen to something that is catchy instantly over and over, because it tends 2 wear thin quickly" argument incidentally... Check out Chocadelica , updated with Lotusflow3r and MPLSound album lyrics April 2nd 2009 :

I don't agree with that either. Hell, just look at When Doves Cry. This song kills that argument. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

The big difference is that Cream is a good song, not garbage like Musicology. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

I never said it was rule of thumb, and certainly not an "argument". it was just something that I personally tend 2 find. This mostly goes for the majority of crap on radio.....including countless shit by Britney Spears for instance. So catchy, plastic and shallow, that by the third listen i've had enough. Not that I've listened 2 the radion in since 2002.

I like 'Cream' matta fact I'm listenin' 2 it now afda readin' whatchall said about it. Everybody's talkin' 'bout the beat but what about the lyrix 2 Cream? Their very positive in my opinion. That's what I tryda listen 2 1st & then I listen 2 the beat & da lyrix & beat match perfect 2getha. I've also heard 'Musicology' real good,of course I only heard it 1nce so I needa hear it a few more times 2 really make a betta assumption on that song. Others ya'll mentioned 'Gett Off' & 'D&P'(my top 2 fav P songs). I like'em each, 'Gett Off'-the beat(this time it comes 1st) & it's funny 2 me when he screams @ the beginning. U even hear a lil' rappin' outta him which is koo. 'D&P'-the beat(1nce again 1st,cuz it's whatcha hear 1st) It's beautiful & upbeat but still in a soft soothing way,& lyrix are nice he really sang real good in that 1. Newayz, all these 3 songs mentioned I love'em & itz koo how I still play'em excessively even tho they're old. Thanx 2 these 3 I got many of my friends 2 like Prince. My best friend wants 'D&P' 2 play @ her future wedding. My 2004 August Highlights: *Tuesday 24th*-best day of my lifeI get my *LEARNERS*-Oh yeah it's ALL good!!
