I don't hate everything Prince does, and I give him credit when he does good. But most of his recent output is trash.

Evil, I got absolutely nothin' against you just cause you don't like any of Prince's new music.

Still though, you do seem a little too critical.

I'm just wondering, did you like anything off prince or Gold Experience?

I dunno, I just don't hear anything but good-great songs on Musicology. I'm far from being a fam too. I was hoping he'd do some more quality r&b/funk/pop/rock music, and he did exactly that with this album. I'm very satisfied with it.

Don't see anything to possibly complain about.

Still though, you really can't deny that 2004 has been successful for Prince so far. It doesn't matter that it's cause of his past hits, cause a fact is a fact.

He's playing in front of sold out arenas and getting great reviews, regardless of the possible speculation surrounding the reasons why.

I wouldn't say "blowing it". They album didn't do much for me either, but the TV performances he's done were absolutely incredible in my book.

It's the same paradox thats been going on for the past several years. Prince gets people all excited with live stuff, makes some pretty interesting and insightful comments in his interviews, then when you get the album in your hands its like "WTF?"

Even with his only official live album, you would think there's no way that could go wrong. With all the incredible bootlegs of the ONA tour that were circulating prior to its release, it was a bit of a downer to hear the versions he ultimately chose for the CDs.

I don't get it, but at a certain point it almost seems like its not worth worrying about anymore. I mean, Joni has recorded some stinkers as well, but I'm not hunting her down screaming "That fucking cunt! How dare she!!!".

It's kinda nice to just pretend those less than stellar P albums were never released, and ejnoy the ones you like.

Yes, I liked Love 2 The 9's, The Morning Papers, The Max, I Wanna Melt With U, The Continental, Damn U, 7, And God Created Woman, 3 Chains O' Gold, Pussy Control, Endorphinmachine, Shhh, Dolphin, 319, Shy, Billy Jack Bitch, I Hate U.

I dunno, I just don't hear anything but good-great songs on Musicology. I'm far from being a fam too. I was hoping he'd do some more quality r&b/funk/pop/rock music, and he did exactly that with this album. I'm very satisfied with it.

That's good then. I personally think it's dry and empty. Good thing we have free downloads.

Don't see anything to possibly complain about.

I guess you really love it.

Still though, you really can't deny that 2004 has been successful for Prince so far. It doesn't matter that it's cause of his past hits, cause a fact is a fact.

But Musicology has nothing to do with it. It's all about the hits, and I know that.

He's playing in front of sold out arenas and getting great reviews, regardless of the possible speculation surrounding the reasons why.

I'm criticizing the new music most of all. I enjoyed his RRHOF after party.

I think our intreped friend meant that this is not a good artistic move. We have to admit, the album is pretty much an excuse to get radio play; which is not a bad thing, except we are not exactly talking about a Purple Rain or SOTT quality album here. This is light weight stuff for the most part. No way it will beat the artistically complex stuff Outkast is doing.

What Prince needs to do is sit in a dark room, grab the hash pipe and listen to different cds of exotic music. He needs a new direction. He has tried the pop star turn. Time to grow a bit more. The dude is 45, for Christ's sake.

But the critical love for this album doesn't surprise me. Critics these days are some of the worse in years.

We miss the old Prince, but frankly, that guy has gone on the yellow brick road--and he may never come back.

Come on. Musicology stinks. Prince has got a chance to make a big come-back and he's blowing it with a bad album, just like he blew his chance when he made a little stir before Rave was released by announcing in a press conference that "Prince" instead of prince would be the producer.
All Prince is going to do after stiring up this new interest in him at the grammies, is remind most people of why they turned from him in the first place. Crappy music.
I really think that this is his last chance.

Do you really believe that? The majority of people didn't turn from him because of his music, but his other antics. Name change, legal issues w/Warner Bros, and going independent. His material and name sank into obscurity. His name was like a four letter word in the industry after that. Regardless of whether or not you like the album, you're reaching.

Why do you even care so much? If critics are happy, its a good thing. It might very well drive sales. He will be in a position to experiment more after that if the album even amounts to a decent profit for Columbia. The masses aren't going to buy experimental at this stage from Prince. They didn't buy experimental until the success of Purple Rain. All you cats on here can lie as much as you want, but I'll bet the majority of you didn't listen to Prince until after that album. Prince has got to rebuild his fan base. 'Musicology' is like 'For You' in the sense that he is almost starting over. He is a lot more confident in himself as a musician, now he just has to work on getting the right mix. There is nothing bad about 'Musicology' save a few tracks. The songs are well crafted, and are performed well. For Prince standards however, it is kinda safe. He just needs more solid reviews and he will be on his way. For those of you commenting on the song "Musicology", and whether or not it can get people to buy the album, you forget that the album isn't even officially out yet. You don't know that it will not succeed.

Thanks.

It's true though. No matter how lame Prince's music is, the fans, or "fams" will claim to love it. They want to love it so much that they actually will.

Really? How many people here say that they LOVED "New Power Soul", or "Rave", or all the worthless rap tracks w/Tony M?

Just seems like you build yourself up for disappointment more than anything else. I do think some people believe he can do no wrong, but it is equally true that some people set themselves up for a disappointment. I can't really say if that is what you are doing. How many people do you think would really take to a Prince dropping an experimental album. I give him credit for dropping new albums. He could just as easily re-record a lot of vault songs that he knows are huge amongst his fan base and let them loose on the public.

That's not true at all (and even if it were, I don't see why that would matter at all). My little sister, who has been a VERY casual fan since the Purple Rain days, just told me that she's been listening to this album a lot since I burned it for her. eek I've been burning her Prince CDs for at least 5 years and she always listens to them once to be nice, but that's it.

She said the new one reminded her of his old music.

Anxiety

Look, I seriously doubt there are enough "hardcore fam" types to fill the Staples Center for five nights. Fact of the matter is, the guy's on a high right now and the "mainstream" is all over his scrawny ass this year. He's in Time. He's in Newsweek. He's becoming more ubiquitous in the media as the year progresses. It's not some kind of fan delusion - the fact is, the guy is making a full-on comeback.

So you don't like his album? Fine. I don't like pickles, but that doesn't mean stocks in Vlassic are plummeting to disaster levels. Don't confuse your personal opinions and tastes with what's really going on. It's kinda delusional and self-defeating.

It'll all be forgotten about soon enough, cuz it sucks. And who cares about reviews? When the Rolling Stone gives 2 stars you all say they don't know what they're talking about, but now suddenly the review means something. Prince's new music won't get him anywhere.

YOU?
He seems to be pretty happy with all that's going on.
I happen to like the old Prince style as well , but some of you (like EWM) act like your whole
world is going to end if you don't get Prince to play his music the way you want it played.
If you have the formula, why not try and get a record deal yourself. If not, find a new artist to
