Not Sign - that was done at Sunset Sound. The first record to be assembled at Paisley Park was The Black Album. There were several tracks done at the studio during 1987 but the first full record to be tracked there was Lovesexy in late 87 early 88.

We were told on the tour that parts of Sign O' The Times was recorded at Paisley Park. Edit....maybe they were talking about the live tracks for the movie. . [This message was edited Wed Apr 7 16:47:21 2004 by lovemachine]

Lovesexy.
Wasn't The Ballad of Dot, the first song to be recorded there? It kind of shows, there is a definate line between the pre and post PP recorded material.

'The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker' was the first song to be recorded in Prince's new home studio in March 1986 (March 15 is cited in Uptown's 'Days Of Wild') over a year before Paisley Park studios were built. He started recording in the Paisley Park Studios in July, 1987. As Jestyr said - 'The Black Album' was the first album to be recorded there. Uptown's 'Days Of Wild' gives a date of July 8th, 1987 as the first day of recording at Paisley Park with the first songs being 'No Changes' (unreleased) and 'Melody Cool'. . Ahh, right, I must check DOW more often (or the Vault when it lands)
Was the Black album recorded there though, or just compiled there, since the material was mainly from earlier projects - will check that out in said Uptown book. I don't think being cocooned up in PP did the music any favours, seems like Prince tried to seclude himself after disbanding the Revolution, holding himself up in PP, then not long after getting rid of the management.

I stand corrected: Uptown's 'Turn It Up 2.0' indicates that 'The Black Album' comprised songs which were ('When 2 R In Love' aside) from the vaults, recorded in 1986 and 1987 ('Days Of Wild' states between September 1986 and March 1987): Le Grind: December, 1986 Cindy C: March, 1987 Dead On It: March, 1987 When 2 R In Love: October, 1987 Bob George: December, 1986 Superfunkycalifragisexy: September, 1986 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton: December, 1986 Rockhard In A Funky Place: October/November, 1986 The compilation began in October 1987. So the first album compiled at Paisley Park and comprising material (but only one song) recorded there was 'The Black Album'. The 'Lovesexy' album was recorded between December, 1987 and January, 1988, and it was almost entirely recorded at Paisley Park. . ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

It wasn't even built then. Don't the linear notes of ATWIAD incidate that some songs were recorded at Paisley Park?

you maybe thinking of the soundboard in STUDIO B, sign o the times was the last full album recorded on that soundboard, which made it from prince's home studio.

OK, the original question was: 'What was the first Prince album recorded at Paisley Park?'
However, the first complete album to be recorded at Paisley Park, and also the first to then be released, appears to be Madhouse's '16', recorded during the last week in July and the first week in August, and then released in November, 1987. . ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

For several years before the facility was completed, Prince would call his various home recording studios and warehouses where he recorded, 'Paisley Park'. Plans for the actual facility were drawn up as early as 1985, but it went through various changes and different sites before the Chanhassen location was settled upon. So yeah, Paisley Park was a metaphorical place for many years. I'm sure most fans don't even realize the place they visited during the celebrations is not the same place the song Paisley Park was recorded.
