Joe Jackson: "I don't want her sounding like Prince. We don't like Prince."

Apparently what he told Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis upon learning that they would produce "Control" album for Janet. Jimmy Jam made this statement on a documentary about Janet. I wonder why Jimmy had to say anything about Prince, even if Joe Jackson DID say that.

I know that at one point JJ/TL and Prince were at odds. Anyone know if JJ/TL made amends; or are they still on the outs?

[Funny thing is: I think a lot of her earlier stuff DID in fact sound like Prince.]

There is no animosity toward Prince from Jam & Lewis. They've been in tv and print interviews and none is displayed. They always seem to express gratitude and admiration. Janet wanted that Minneapolis sound, or else she wouldn't have wanted J&L as producers, and when you get to be an adult there's nothing a parent can do about it.

Of course she did

Control, What have you done for me lately, Love will never do ..... Oh my god I miss U much

All Prince sounding records

Her first 2 or 3 records were Prince/Time records and since Prince wasn't doing that sound any more she moved right comfortably in

no doubt.

and I know for a fact that that burned joe jackson's ass like never before. He could control his sons, but not his daughter, and it probably almost killed him.

technically, Janet is a Prince protege, wouldnt u say?

Heh. That's a good way to look at it. Janet digs the hell out of Prince's old stuff, and not just sonically either - thematically it's the wave she's been riding for a while now. biggrin

Shew...I was afraid this thread was about Joe "Steppin' Out" Jackson saying he didn't like Prince, which would have been TRULY disappointing.

I was really wondering why he would have anything against Prince... but it's nice to hear the name again. Had forgotten all about the guy. He had some good stuff out in the 80s.

I saw him today on a morning show. He went to a small village in Germany to promote his new book. WTF? He got 100 % attention by the residents, but there were just 5 people. What a sad fuck. Sometimes I don't get their way of living eek

i found that kinda laughable as well. still sounds like prince influenced to me. but at the minimum, you can not seperate the minneapolis sound from prince. its clearly an album that was made by people associated with prince. mixture of the time tracks, and jesse johnson music.

Jimmy didn't say anthing insulting about Prince, it was just a statement Joe Jackson made when he heard J&T were gonna produce Control. Goes to show, never judge a book by its cover. Just cause Jimmy and Terry learned a lot from Prince, don't mean they ARE Prince. They took that sound to a different level.

Jimmy & Terry and Prince buried that hatchet WAY LONG ago, where have you been??? Remember 1990? Thats when Graffiti Bridge came out and The Time's Pandamonium album, Prince gave Databank, Jerk out and Chocolate to them, as well as those Graffiti Bridge songs.

damn right....she was once asked on TRL if there was anyone she would camp out to see (if she werent rich and could go to any concert she wanted) without hesitation, she said Prince.

This is hilarious!!! I actually love Joe Jackson and have a couple of his albums. He actually one of the most brilliant keyboards of the modern era. Great songs, too in the '80s!
