Prince sales of Musicology

Just saw this on Foxnews.com...looks like the man is back!!!! Good to see this. This looks like actual sales & not counting the concert CD's...I could be wrong tho. I went to Best Buy in Raleigh Saturday & they had like 5 copies of the CD left. biggrin

Prince On Track for Biggest Hit in Years

A little hard work is paying off today for Prince. After about a dozen years in the wilderness, he has a hit.

Prince's new album, "Musicology," looks like it sold between 200,000 and 220,000 in its first seven days out and will finish in second place for the week.

It's sort of amazing when you realize that the last hit album of original material Prince had was... hmmm? Wait, I can remember. Was it "Emancipation?" Was it "The Gold Album," in 1991?

Actually, it's hard to say, considering Prince spent most of the '90s fighting with Warner Bros. and releasing his own albums in unconventional ways. But "Musicology" is distributed by Sony, which was a wise move on the label's part and on the artist's part, as well. Appearances on the Grammy Awards and his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame helped make Prince seem a little less kooky and more accessible.

i'm a chart geek but i miss the days when an album would debut in the 80's and 90's and work it's way up instead of debuting at #1 or #2 and dropping like a rock..oh well soundscan changed all that

That was back when the charts were interesting and fun. Nowadays? Garbage. Straightjackets for radio programmers and meaningless blurbs for press agents. They hold NO value for the music buying public any more.

yeah i love the idea of a single being on the charts for 10 weeks before peaking and then you get the success story of a single being on the charts for like nearly a year before peaking at the top! how did soundscan change all that? is it cos everythings geared towards firstweek sales, why would soundscan change that?

personally id love to see rules implemented for singles, they have to have so many tracks to qualift for this pricing. not just shite remixes from djs noones heard of. i mean like, you have 4 new tracks (or maybe 2 inc single and a live one and a alt.version or something) and you can charge £2.99. 3 tracks £2, 2 tracks £1. i guess its never going to happen and probably wont make much difference, especially cos in a few years the band always release a b sides collection and youve essentially wasted your money!

Ya know...I was just quoting the article. I know Emancipation came out in 1996 & TGE came out in 1994. I just thought people would want to see the info I found. If I'm gonna be called an idiot for posting something with a typo that I had nothing to do with then it looks like I'll just go back to lurking & keeping my comments to myself. People need to learn manners.
