after watching the grammys performance again...it is concerning to me...

what is the deal with the mic/gun thing ?? i am not trying to be negative, but, really, what is that about ? what a horrible thing to look at, and once i did really pay attention to the horror of what i was looking at, it was hard to see anything but that...why o why would prince sing with a gun pointed at his mouth ? what message is there to get out of that ??? confuse

Maybe it is just because it makes him feel different and not like every one else! I see nothing wrong in it! I m OK with that mic and any thing Prince does in his life because I know that is Prince and that is who and what he does! big grin

ok sweetie, but what im saying is....its a horrible image, the man that i love to watch/listen to, singing his heart out into a gun ??? disbelief maybe i am old, and dont get it, but it doesnt seem to be a very 'warm' feeling, does it ? im just saying, there are lots of things he can put to his mouth (like my lips for example smile ) that would be more appealing.....ya know ?

the return of the gun-mic also caught my attention. not crazy about it, to say the least. one of my least favorite prince props of all time.

reminds me of back in 1994 when he and Nona did that PSA about gun violence, and Kurt Loder bringing up the hypocrisy of him having used the gun mic prominently for the previous two years.

I was actually relieved that he still used the gun-mic. I kinda had this feeling...that maybe there is hope yet. As long as he's not singing into a "stauros" looking thing, shouldn't be a problem. LOL

See I have problem with it being old because no one else has something like it! That is why it is so cool! Because it is different!

ok ok ....but why choose the gun ? thats what my whole point was ? what made him choose that, and what is the message we are supposed to get out of that ? you know he didnt just one day say, how bout i sing into a gun....there has to be some kind of logic for it, doesnt there ?

It might be used just cuz it looks cool.

Or it might be to emphasize the idea of music as a weapon, or something of great influence (or, like, fighting fire with fire or something).

Why the gun mic? It looks cool, it's different and it's a helluva lot better shaped than a normal mic which looks like an erect penis ... now that's a disturbing thought! eek

I think it was the "gangster glam" thing of the Diamonds and Pearls era. He's had it since then.

And he used it in the Sexy MF video. But I know what you mean. I don't really like it.

I think it was possibly inspired by the "love sign" song where he speaks of throwing up the love sign and not the gun. Also speaks of singing love songs while your aiming your gun at me and i'm aiming back at you. Not verbatim on the lyrics i know but the point of the song in making love not war and letting music be your weapon of choice i think inspired the idea of a Gun being used for something positive.
Just a thought since it seemed to come out about the time this song and others like it were being written.

Never liked it. I asociate it with the begining of the end of Prince as we knew him in the 80s. It coincided with massive rise of gangsta rap. It always seemed like a lame attempt to look hard. Back when it seemed that Prince was unsure about himself and tried too hard to appeal to the hip hop community.

you guys it is his way of saying "shooting out lyrics" nothing else instead of using the gun to kill he is using to shoot you all with music.

i do however understand the controversy.

but i love the black one better than the gold gunmic from the symbol album.

SHOOTING OUT LYRICS Y'ALL - SHOOTING OUT LYRICS.

it is however how you look at it. i always try to put things in a positive note instead of looking at it negatively .

I remember in an older interview with prince, I think the one he did for VH1 with Chris Rock (but don't hold me to it) he explained that he uses the gun-mic because the gun is violent, and he negates it by singing his words of peace into the gun. I may not have the exact interview correct, but that is what he said on the subject. I hope this clears things up a little.

Also found it a bit disturbing. The old one was a shiny gold thing that I found kind of sexy. His new one looks more like a real firearm.

WHAT YOU TALKIN' ABOUT WILLIS???

There's no gun mic on the Grammy show - there is teh pretty standard microphone which has a bit that slots onto the stand *used during Baby Im A Star)...is that what you are on about.

Where is the gun mic???

NEWSFLASH:

It's not a gun. It's a microphone, it's not loaded so he's quite safe.

I don't think his safety is the concern, at least not mine. It's hard to describe precisely why it bugs but it has something to do with violent imagery and glamorizing a weapon.
