What do you think of Candy Dulfer's vocal talent?? I truly miss Wendy and Lisa doing backup vocals for Prince... "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

Candy aint Wendy and Lisa but I think she holds her own. But I just maybe the only person up on here that thinks "Life O the Party" is not shite. ego tripping out

Cat even sang better than Candy... "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

Well maybe (Dint mama tell us love is too good to waste?), but don't you also think NPS is stronger than Musicology? (from another post) Now that just does not make any sense to me. So we are hearing P from two very different perspectives. And that's All Good. ego tripping out

The sound of Musicology is nothing new compared to NPS and is a tighter album, for a weak Prince album at that...there's really no uniting theme in Musicology...some tracks are out of place and weak...and going back to Candy...she didn't sound good in the song Life O The Party... "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

Oh lordy what is Rainbowchild sayin? I hear you on the lack of unity on Musicology but I think the guitar driven rock sound contrast nicely with the heavier bass driven grooves, the contrast injects the entire record with a kind of levity that the dreary NPS completely lacks. With the exception two or three tracks, Prince is seriously reaching on NPS. "Let the head bob...freaks on this side...mad sex" I mean these lyrics/songs lack the vitality and edge that makes funk funk. And, getting back to the thread, I think Candy works the mic fine on LOParty. Sorry for the diversion. Peace. ego tripping out

Well, I guess we just differ in our opinion...I actually love NPS for those tracks you mentioned!! MAD SEX is da bomb!! "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

Mad Sex is the only really good song on that album. I can do without the lyrics but I like the music. By the way, I can't imagine Candy's any worse than Wendy and Lisa in the singing department. [This message was edited Sun Apr 4 8:44:59 2004 by whodknee]

You got to be kidding. Wendy and Lisa were horrible backup singers, they off key all of the time!!! Some of you orgers and your romancticism over Wendy and Lisa is just amazing!!! "Say it Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud!!!" - Brother James Brown
"Make my funk the P-FUNK...I want my funk uncut...." Brother George Clinton

I think Candy's doing a great job on sax and on vocals. I wouldn't call her style "stand-out" like I would with Eric or Maceo on sax, or Boni or Rosie on vocals, but she seems to blend in with Prince's sound pretty effortlessly and she's got a great stage presence.

I give her an A for effort, but she sounds and looks incredibly strained when she's singing and that isn't too enjoyable for me. Sheila and Rhonda do a better job singing backup. For that song in particular (LOTP) maybe that's the sound that Prince wanted...

I like Wendy and Lisa to but how can anyone compare then with Rosie, Cat the original,Rhonda, Sheila, and even Candy. I don't understand this. I was actually very surprised when I heard her voice live. Shes the real deal. Boy it pays to be versitale in this business. Don't get me wrong , I'm not saying that she is the next coming but she does hold her own vocally, and on the sax she kicks ass.

I swear he was recording that song and recorded the first avaiable female that he knew. I'm surprised Mani doesn't end up on the tracks! Seriously though, it's like when he got Sheila to sing on Erotic City. Surprise! You're a singer! I think Prince is great at bringing the best out of his band members. "Alright everybody! You're gonna do this dance step while you play! Ready? Go! On the one!" I don't think Candy could do any better with her voice, like this is the extent of her vocal ability. Which is fine, it gets the job done and he doesn't have to hire a back-up singer!

It doesn't make me cry that she's freakin' hot, either. (And my wife agrees!) Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/

I think she's GREAT!
Prince could produce an album for her like he did before for others like Mark Brown and Shelia E. Candy Dulfer singing and with some hot horn solos, that'd be cool. What y'all think? LIFE O' THE PARTY!

I repent. Since my last visit to the org I have suffered a near fatal tuk-tuk accident. Disregard anything I've said in the last hour.
Thank you. | |

Personally, I think Prince should add a female back-up singer for that purpose and not have her sax player, whom we haven't heard before for years until this album... "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

I haven't heard her own material which she's sang on - i'm only going on Life of the Party. And i think she's bad. Really bad. She holds the note and that's about it - really unpleasant tone.

WHAT???!!!! Candy Dulfer has played with P since "Batman"! She's played with him for years after that, too... Also, remember that she's a solo artist and often sings on tracks on her album. In fact, Sheila E. sang on one of her albums (I think Saxology).

I generally like Candy's vocals - I've got 4 albums of hers.
But LoTP - sorry babe, I can't stand it. Is that really her?? [speeling edeeeeet] [This message was edited Tue Apr 6 12:41:04 2004 by 1p1p1i3]

I have always adored Candy's playing, but...
I don't hate LotP as much as a lot of people seem to, but it is one of my least favorite tracks on the album, and I think her vocals are why. I'm not sure if it's actually her singing I don't like or the way her part has been recorded and/or processed. I'll try to give her the benefit of the doubt. Is she multitracked the way Madonna was on her early hits, singing her part twice? Her lines sound sort of shrill and echo-ey. That said, the backup singer on 1+1+1 is 3 is still a thousand times more annoying to me. Who the hell was that anyway? I never knew so I just call her Rosie-on-crack. You better wake up, Stella. This is my town!

You've got a great point, freakebear...it does have that shrill quality to it...that's why people are saying "cringe-inducing" and stuff like that...if you're really pumping the album it actually does hurt your ears. But she's got a good voice - not great, but good. And y'all talking about Wendy and Lisa are from another planet. Thank the motherfucking Lord I ain't from that wack-ass no-taste-havin' planet, yo. Out of tune on Let's Go Crazy? Put down the needle, put down the spoon. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

My boyfriend said her singing sux...and he never judges anyone
at the show her face was cringing with pain trying to get a note out. she tries so hard....i think she's an imitator not a singer "What if I called you silly names, just like the ones that you call me"
