comeback-where did he go

an annoyed prince fan-i dont know about you guys but i hate they way all these journalists are talking about the way prince is perfroming so well and this is a comeback, and its good to see his talent shine again, and this is the first time in 6 years and what not, if one wants to say this is a comeback attempt commercially thats fine, but dont act like as a live musician he's been in some cave, the ona tour kicked major major ass, it displayed true musicianship on an intimate level, some of these writers would have known that if they werent busy writing about the britney tour, or nsync's latest chart position. As ll cool j said, dont call it a comeback, i been here for years

preach brutha/ sista, preach!

this backhanded and/or ignorant praise that prince has been getting so much of is absolutely the most annoying aspect of all this media attention.

'comeback', mr. media man?????!??!!!!
How about The Rainbow Children up your ass, ONA upside your head, ONA live in the gut, Xpectation from behind, Slaughterhouse to the face, The Chocolate Invasion from behind again, NEWS as a bitchslap, and then tour to finish your comeback callin ass?? You waking up media man?!

all those jumping the praise bandwagon? Clown Central is what it is. The grammy performance??!
think that was hot?! is that all your sensory apparatus can handle, something as tame as that?!

"oh but this time its in the mainstream, and this time he was next to beyonce's booty, and Outkast said some good thing about Prince, right?"
oh yeah? and here comes my chainsaw again texas style chainsaw

they love it when prince plays safe. its not like i'm in a rage or anything. biggrin
but this twaddle just goes unchecked, and continues to compound upon itself, as one ignorant writer cuts and pastes the words and ideas of the other.

pick any year in the 90's. and he was tearing shit up. why's that so hard for the fuckin knuckleheads to figure out? if mj was giving free concerts, (or $7 concerts) on a weekly basis as his his home studio, like prince has done for years (off and on) at a stretch, then don't you think it would get written about all the time by these fools? it doesn't take sherlock holmes to find out that these shows happen. theys all trippin like prince was driving a taxi or something for the last decade.

what's it supposed to mean really?
it might mean that 'hurrah! it seems prince is willing to play by our rules! he's admitted he was a dork! he's tired of fighting the industry, and things like clear channel, and for ownership of his masters! yea! he's willing to be a slave again!"

ok so call it a comeback.

if anything it's a comeback to good taste by the media.
ok i vented, and it was fun.

Unfortunately, pop culture is at a point today where you're nobody unless your'e on the charts and they're talking about you on Access Hollywood. They feel if it doesn't have a Media Frenzy, and if all the kids aren't talking about it, then it doesn't exist anymore. Prince has been working outside of the mainstream. Your average person still thinks of him as wearing the ruffled shirt and purple coat. One person actually told me about a year ago, "I like Prince, I just wish he would release some more music." They really hadn't heard anything about him since his top 40 pop days.

For Some of us prince has never left to have a comeback. I loved Prince before Purple Rain and I Love him more after and since.

Where have you been, Princes creativity and status has increased over the years.

I admit that I have no clue exactly how big Prince's fan base is but when you go from where he was in the '80s and early '90s to where he has been since Emancipation it's fair to call this a comeback. As far as the general public is concerned Prince hasn't done anything since The Most Beautiful Girl In The World was a hit. That was ten years ago. How many hardcore fans does Prince have now? Under 100,000?

Listen, I love Prince. I understand your point. But to me it is disgusting that an artist of Prince's calibre is not still having million selling albums. If Sting, Rod Stewart and James Taylor can still have hit albums why can't Prince? I think the reality is that it was much harder for him after he left WB than he will ever admit. Does anyone doubt that if he were on a major label for the last 8 years he would have sold a shit load more records than he did? I know to hardcore fans this stuff shouldn't matter. But Prince could have and should have reached many more people than he did over the last 10 years.

Does anyone have any idea how many members the NPGMC has? I guess that would be the best way to see how many fans he now has. I'm very curious about that.

for some of us that's true. but for the people who don't populate this website, or the one where you can buy the music from, (which is pretty much everyone but a few thousand people) it's a comeback.

a comeback creatively, i dont feel he needs to do that, he has made tons of creative songs post warner, now if u mean commercial comeback, then say that, thats what people really mean, and thats what journalists relate to, now its more than creatively when music writers say things like"based on his recent grammy and hall of fame perfromances prince is back" or "prince looks back in form" MAJOR FUCKING NEWS FLASH WRITERS, PRINCE IS AN A-W-E-S-O-M-E LIVE PERFORMER, he can get up in the morning and school beyonce, and churn out that lets go crazy solo before morning toast, the point iam making is, he is always in form as a performer, there is never a comeback, these journalists are busy covering the mtv awards to know much

like togdog said, its easy for us to say this isn't a comeback but, really, most of the world hasn't heard from prince since tmbgitw back in in '94. yes, this is definitely a comeback. i don't agree with any idea that this is a comeback creatively...people who think that need to check out his back catalogue now and get re-acquainted with the man. this is most definitely a commercial comeback, that can be seen already. mtv playing him, vh1 playing him, radio playing him, rolling stone featuring a great review of a NEW record...mark my words, he'll even be on the cover of the magazine at some point in the not too distant future. everybody is talking about him and he's selling out large arenas. yeah, this is a comeback alright.

oh, i'd call it a creative comeback as well. of all of his post-WB albums, are there really any that one can listen to from beginning to end and say "that's solid"? almost all of them are deeply flawed, or just sound tossed off in an afternoon. admittedly, Musicology also sounds like it was pretty easy, but it also sounds like some thought was put into the song selection, and he didn't just go in and sit down with an acoustic guitar or piano and churn out some demos (a la the Truth and ONA). The Rainbow Children, as good as many of us think it is, I think we can all agree that there are things about it that are really annoying or don't work so well. ONALive? well, it's a live album. and back-to-back-to-back instrumental jazz albums (Xpectation, C-NOTE, NEWS) aren't the things that made us fans or are going to hold our interest very long, no matter how good they are.

this is the first real "Prince" album that, while itself flawed in the sense that there are really no killer tracks, sounds like what we know he can do, even if he can do this stuff in his sleep.

i would say Musicology is a creative comeback. it's the first one i've been able to listen to from beginning to end, any time of day or night, in any mood, and enjoy since... well the Vault, but even that doesn't count, since it's actually from 1996 (and 90% of it is comprised of even older stuff than that).

then again, the album isn't even the major part of the creative comeback. i think that his acceptance of his past work, and being willing to do a greatest hits tour with it, to go on TV and actually put some effort into promoting his music and his career, without sticking his foot in his mouth every other day goes a long way toward him getting back on track creatively and commercially.

Plain and simple, since HE was commercially out of sight, he was publically out of mind. I guess Eminem and Jay-Z, 50cent and the hip-pop movement had saturated the airwaves. Dr. Dre and the Neptunes flooded the market with their work, while we famliy members bought his work regardless. All of this new press coverage is only happening because of the successful tour so far. Jump on the wagon.

i'm sure he doesn't mind a few bandwagon jumpers. after all, that's who pays for his lifestyle. selling mp3's to the same few thousand people over and over doesn't pay for those rose petals he wipes his ass with or the oil of olay that he masturbates with. biggrin

Now I wont go as far to say that Prince fell off the planet, but c'mon, he did have an off period. Namely, the Late 90's. He was at a creative low, live and in the studio, between '98-'01. Don't lie about it. NPS sucked a donkey's dick better that that whore in TJ. I went to that goddamn Hit and Run Tour show. I was embarrased to be a Prince fan. When He went on the ONA Tour, he was on his Last thread with me. Luckily I was blown away. That was just last year though. He was barely getting back on the radar then. Slowly working himself in, getting TRC and Jehova out of his system. Just like with anything Prince gets into really hard, it fades a little with time, while remaining present.

But no one can't say that Price wasn't out of it for a couple years in the late 90's. It was probably because of the Kid and shit and him and Mayte splitting up. U can't really blame him. That was some drama. Be going through all that and STILL hit the stage. I give him props.

I think that Prince even thinks he is in a "comeback" of sorts. It deffinately seems like he feels re-born or something. He probably is seeing the world through cleaner eyes now and is more aware of his focus. Mani probably showed him some dry ground.

Point taken, Rialb. From the general media standpoint it possibly is a comeback but since Prince has been touring worldwide, for what 2 - 3 years, to a full houses everywhere, general public included (general seating at the Kodak theatre was packed, sold out even, twice, the HOB after parties, sold out). I'd say Prince has had a very strong fan base and that is what has surprised the industry, that even without the intense media/industry support and hype, he has true honest fans who will seek him out, and the numbers are growing. What those numbers are damned if I know, I don't think NPGMC is releasing that information, at least not yet.
