Musicology and Sign 'o' the times

For those fortunate to have heard the new album, I pose a question. Anyone hearing the strong SOTT vibe? Musicology the album, reminds me of the more rawer cuts on SOTT. Approach wise, and some instances music wise. Anyone? cool

I think the exact same thing. Add a bit of the Gold Experience Vibe.

Please, how is Musicology worse than NPS? NPS got a soul so new it's still in the shrink wrap. It's glossy, overproduced, and impenetrable. Musicology, has got a kind of groove driven levity that puts NPS to shame. As for SOTT: I hear it in Life O the Party, Cinnamon Girl, What do you want Me... Really, while I think you point to many records to find the inspiration for Musicology, the two records I hear the most of are TGE and Dirty Mind. Sly's got be Prince’s most significant precursor and he’s buried deep and shallow on most of the grooves on Musicology. Just like "Make Your Mama Happy" "Dear Mr. Man" could almost be Sly straight up.

not in a million years! really, i'm trying, but damn, it's a tough job getting through the musicology material. and please, take the LINN back or take a real drummer like 'the rainbow children' album. thought he was back on track with that album, this sounds more like 'rave' and 'new power soul' to me... and there not MY favourites. sorry

I admire your love 4 "The Rainbow Children" masterpiece, 4 I love it too. Definitely in My top 5. But man give "Musicology" a chance. It really is that good.

As for the original post. I am feeling some real connection to the "new" influential genius work of music "SOTT". I just wish it was a double album as well.

There are 2 flawed tracks on "Musicology" (LOTP) and (Call My Name). I think another jamming ass song like "Loose" or even a complete song like "Life of the Party" metamorphs into towards the end (the part when the song completely changes beat) would definitly work and instead of a slow song like "Call my Name"

I would have loved a slow song in the vein of say "When 2 R In Love", a highlight for me from both "Black" and "LoveSexy". I love "SOTT" most of all in the Prince catalogue, but I always found that it's flawed songs were "Slow Love" and "Play in the Sunshine" (My definition of flawed: is the songs I skipped the most) not saying that I did not totally like either, but they just did not hit me as the others did. (Just like the 2 new ones don't) A double LP would make up for this.
Almost every Prince LP of note has these "two songs" for me tho. "1999" had "All the Critics..." and "Free", Controversy had "Ronnie Talk.." and "Annie Christian" etc

SOTT has some songs that are just ok. I don't understando why people liek forever in my life so much, the cross is very simple, it's an ok rock song, play in the sunshine is so happy it's almost embarassing for a rock song, starfish and coffe is nothing extraordinary too. I really think that SOTT is overrated. I rather listen to TRC, Purpel Rain, Dirt Mind, Parade, LoveSexy, Symbol, Gold, and musicology than SOTT. Even tought one of his better songs IMO is if i was your girlfriend, i could never take the place and housequake

Not in the slightest.

Unless you are referring to the Linn-by numbers drum machine beat on whichever song it is that has it.

Look who's talkin'. You just trashed All The Critics and Annie Christian. I know Annie Christian isn't held in high esteem around here but All The Critics?? While we're at it you're wrong about Free too. wink

I can see where your comparison is coming from. While I'm still warming up to some of the Musicology tracks, my favorite thing from it so far is its production. It just has a raw almost demo-like feel. P's voice is rough in many places and it just sounds good to me. I'm happy with the CD so far.

I just can't get a handle on LOTP yet! It just meanders through 2/3 of the song, but damn, when the different beat kicks i towards the end, it's just slammin!

Ok so I know that 7salles is getting something very different from Prince. Maybe a large dose of the Temptations will help you with Forever in my Life?

Can I just say something? I know I am gonna get slammed on my ass for this BUT I am gonna say it anyway! lol Why are people so quik to compare Prince's work with other albums that he's done? To me I think every album is different from the last. It's like comparing your children when there is no comparison. Can we just accept the differences and talk about that insted of..this sounds like this one ? OK I'm done slam away! biggrin

Flawed in your opinion which is what it is an opinion. Every album from every artist has so call throwaway songs because somebody or critic does'nt like them. It's all subjective. Thats y music is never ending because there has not been a be all end all album or song ever made that 100% of the people like. I did'nt like starfish&coffee when i 1st heard it but thru live performances by prince i started 2 appreciate the song and now it seems 2 flow with the album in my eyes. But then again thats my take on it. I never bought THRILLER but 48 million plus did and i like only 3 to 4 songs on the album and just becuz that many people bought it does'nt mean it was the best of all time but just the most popular. The majority say elvis was king and i totally beg 2 differ! Prince will never make a album that u will love every song becuz he is 2 diverse a performer/artist. He is truly 1 of a kind. So just chill and enjoy the ride bcuz it's going 2 be a long 1!!

A bit of SOTT, yes. Some Parade even. It's in the instrumentation - not necessarily in the drums, but in the bluntness of the melodic instruments.

The songwriting is different though.

I agree. It's the bluntness of the whole approach. I hear Ballad of Dorothy Parker elements in What do u Want me 2 do. There are other "references" I hear as well. It don't matter cause they don't sound like rip-offs are anything. I'm just really digging the new album. Very pleased.

I love Prince because of this. Dude's music is so diverse that so many opinions can diverge on one song or Album.

4 the record tho we're cool wink
