Contrary to what I was told-Prince is still pretty sexual

Okay, here is the thing:

Prince, yeah he used to swear and hump random speakers, but was it really that constant? I don't recall any of his tours being mercilessly raunchy (okay so maybe the Dirty Mind shows).Does the album "Purple Rain" even have any swearing on it? I don't think it does. He didn't really start cussing heavily in concert until the 90's and then he layed it on pretty thick with the Days of Wild pissed off slave bad boy in heels routine.

Before watching the simulcast from LA I was a expecting him to be a prude based on what the press (and some fans around here) had been saying about him "cleaning up his act." However, Prince was actually pretty provocative and sexual during his show. No, he didn't drop the F bomb or sing "Darling Nikki" but he writhed around the floor during "The Beautiful Ones" and made several not so subtle references to oral sex while singing "On the couch." Plus, he had the whole crowd chanting "..people call me rude. I wish we all were nude...".

What I am saying is that , after seeing him live a week ago, there is not a huge difference between how "sexy" he is now and how he used to be. I mean his energy level and the "party" atmosphere is still always there. It's like Prince said himself. It was cool to cuss when no one else was doing it. Now he'd just be another singer trying to "shock" people by being raunchy. Trouble is it's not shocking anymore, and after the Janet Jackson boob thing-it's not sexy either. I mean I'd been waiting for years to see Janet's boob and it was really quite a let down. Prince hasn't let me down yet. I wish we all were nude...
"New Power slide...."

Yeah! Someone in the chatroom recently was telling me that Prince was still sexual on stage. I was like, "Cool, I hope he is like that when he comes to Cleveland!" I like it when Prince takes a no-holds-barred approach to his performances, besides, his raw sexual energy is what got him noticed and made him famous. giggle

The sexual imagery of Purple Rain was pretty constant - and it really has to be heard in the context of the film to which it was the soundtrack.

From the get-go of 'Let's Go Crazy', we have Prince making reference to a phone call - what does he hear? Couple that with the early images we have of Prince as 'The Kid' in silhouette, masturbating the neck of his guitar. From then on in, it's probably best to remember how he dresses and acts out 'The Beautiful Ones', and 'Darling Nikki', aside from the preening and pouting.

And the accompanying tour was full of the same. Even when God pays a visit whilst Prince is taking a bath, the conversation is on the difference between love and lust,

He was out to portray 'The Kid' as a horny guy bursting with both sexual energy and ego, who could tease and taunt someone like Appollonia.

His stage persona was equally sexual in his tempting playfulness, asking the audience 'Does your man have an ass like mine?'

Yes, he's still pretty sexual, but not in an overtly brazen way, nor with the intent of playing the ego-driven playboy. It's subtle, and it isn't there to make a statement about his prowess except usually in fun. Rather, he's simply celebrating the joy of intimate sexual pleasure. He still writes and records songs with reference to sex toys ('Supercute', 'Mellow'), but the references are a little mature and you don't hear him impersonating the storekeeper selling the batteries to a woman he originally wanted to call 'Vagina'!

(And there is swearing on 'Purple Rain' - you have to play it backwards though!)

wink

To me that's what's always been so great about Prince, he doesn't have to be vulgar to be sexual or sexy.
I'm firmly planted in denial

You can't take everything you hear around here as gospel. A lot of Orgers have a tendency to be melodramatic. The explicitness is gone, the innuendo never stopped.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I admit it, I downloaded Controversy from the NPGMC, although I half expected it to be either instrumental or with lyrics changes. redface

But Gooey said it was good and I trust Gooey's judgment. nod So I did it!

And I was quite pleasantly surprised that he actually sang "people call me rude, I wish we all were nude." I like that. Maybe I'll actually go see him if the tour ever hits Danish shores. biggrin
