Never liked it. I asociate it with the begining of the end of Prince as we knew him in the 80s. It coincided with massive rise of gangsta rap. It always seemed like a lame attempt to look hard. Back when it seemed that Prince was unsure about himself and tried too hard to appeal to the hip hop community.
The end of prince of the 80's began on 1/1/90! Gangsta Rap which was called hardcore rap began around 1997. If Prince was trying 2 be hard he would'nt be wearing makeup. Just like the symbol shaped gtar and the liquid cane he is just being different and not following gangsta rap. Prince twirls the gun mic just like Sammy Davis Jr did his gun thing back in the day with his mic! Prince was never unsure of himself and he was'nt appealing 2 the hiphop community but doing what he has been doing his whole career which is incorporating a different style and genre of music in 2 his own. Just like he did with his influences James Brown,Little Richard,P-Funk,Sly,Jimmi Hendrix, the Beatles etc.,etc. Prince obviously has been influenced by rap, he is a sponge as a musical artist and always will be. Look at his jazz fusion stuff that be hinting at Miles. So please get off this he lost himself crap just bcuz u don't like a certain segment of rap! Prince has been a musical chameleon his whole life and always will be.

I never used to like the gun mic, probably because the whole gangsta thing never worked well for Prince. I found his work with rappers and hip hop music in general always very awkward and sometimes embarrassing. Even though the gun mic was unique, to me the image of him holding the gun represented him copying trends....and copying badly. He came off like he was trying too hard and the lame rappers and dancers really destroyed his credibility.

Recently, however when I saw him twirling the new black gun mic at the RRHOF performance. I must admit. He looked kind of badass!!! I think it was the combination of the more realistic looking gun mic and the white Tony Montana style suit. It seems to work for him now. The awkwardness is gone. He didn't just have Tony's look down, he also nailed Tony's swagger and confidence. You almost expect him to start talking trash like Tony.

I don't buy that whole "the gun is violent, he uses his words of peace into the gun" thing. He's doing it because he thinks it makes him look like a badass. This time convincingly. At the RRHOF he looked like an OG.
The awkwardness u speak of is that u felt awkward bcuz u did'nt like the hiphop vibe that he was on at the time. The D&P and SYMBOL ACT1/ACT2 tours were critically acclaimed by Rollingstone Mag. and other music critics. And exactly who was prince copying?, becuz i don't know of any rappers who travel with a skin tight kick ass band! And i also don't know of any rappers who have gun mics and who play gtar and play piano and dance and do tha splits wearing a police cap with chains! Holla atchya boy!!

The way I see it is if U've got to hold a mic it may as well be in the form of artifact.
But I've never seen him hold it against his head
And no, Prince is not glorifying viloence or anything like that.

The way he holds it sometimes its like blowing the smoke from the barrell after getting a shot on target, Now we all know P never misses ,right?!

And no. Prince does not glorify violence with that mic in his hands. I've never seen him hold it in an obsene or riddiculous manner at all.
To me its like he's blowing the smoke out of the barrell after hitting the target, now, we all know P never misses, right!?

And when he points it to the croud, If U're lucky enough to be close by, it makes an impact, U know he's pointing straight at U and not just holding a mic in the air.

I've never seen The Godfather, but I'd bet Prince got Apollonia's name out of the bible: Acts 17:1.

what is the deal with the mic/gun thing ?? i am not trying to be negative, but, really, what is that about ? what a horrible thing to look at, and once i did really pay attention to the horror of what i was looking at, it was hard to see anything but that...why o why would prince sing with a gun pointed at his mouth ? what message is there to get out of that ??? confuse

the mic gun is cool

when prince holds it,

it's sexycool

even more than that,

it symbolizes power

in the right hands,

power can be used to

change things 4 the better

prince is back

thangs is gonna change
