The Rainbow Children is prince's second greatest album of all time... as far as i'm concerned... absolutely brilliant! - top to bottom! i feel bad for those who dont get it...

but right now all i'm listening to is musicology... too soon to tell really, probably not in the prince top 5 albums of all time, but aside from TRC its his best album in over 10 years.

definately a few instant classics for me...

Appples and oranges, really. Two very different types of albums. TRC is better musically, no doubt about it, but it gets a tad bogged down by the lyrics and annoying voice overs. Musicology is more stripped down, but it has some of Prince's best lyrics in years. TRC flows much better as an album, while Musicology sounds more like a collection of various songs. I like 'em both, but for very different reasons. If we're going on sheer musicianship, then TRC is the superior album.

Not everybody. I thought it had some problems lyrically, and I found the narration to be quite distracting, but I've always said that I thought it was Prince's best album since The Gold Experience. When TRC came out, it certainly had a mixed reaction, and its detractors have been far more vocal by far. Still, MANY folks loved it. I see what your saying, however, that some folks do tend to start claiming the previous disc as a masterpiece whenever the new one drops. Silly.

I am still not a fan of it. Beautiful musically, though. You have have to take into consideration that sometimes it takes people a long time to appreciate something. I just started liking the Come album about three months ago.

I think TRC is better musically and as a work of stand alone art. Musicology is a better pop album that has potential to appeal to the masses. for me TRC is among his greatest works and better represents the concept of "musicology" as claimed by prince on leno than Musicolgy itself.

OOOOH this is tough. Right now I still say The Rainbow Children, which I consider one of Prince's best albums ever. But I do love Musicology.

I'm paraphrasing here but Prince said it best:

(Musicology) is a bowl of sugar, no smack (like TRC).

TRC is a musical adventure for the music lover, whereas Musicology is a collage of Prince moments we've heard before. Really!! Because of this, I prefer TRC. It is fresh, interesting, thought-provoking, and sophisticated.

Musicology, and I have to be careful here since I've only been listening it for a few days, is so elementary. Aside from a few tracks, they're really just NPG downloads à la Props 'n Pounds. Not to say I'm not enjoying it. Trax like Musicology,Cinnamon Girl, WDYWM2D, The Marrying Kind, If I Was, and Reflection are good songs but they dont' pack the same WOW! that TRC does. Don't want to sound too critical but not having a backing band weakens Musicology's punch.

My feeling is that Musicology is an introduction of sorts to a new power generation of fans. I am hoping that the April 20th version offers MORE just like the special edition Rave did to the original Rave.

"I'm gonna put her on the same diet Missy went on. You know she eat too much tonight." Don't know what this means, but I'm loving it just the same!

Im freakin out at how much people hated TRC and then musicology comes out and everyone LOVES TRC. Its just weird, ive never seen people complain more about an album, with its lyrics and content and whatnot. Are there just LOTS more people talkin now or are we rubbing elbows with hypocrites?

Musicology.

TRC is crushed under the weight of its own pomposity.

I think that's it, there may be a lot of people that didn't post before--for my part, I've been a member since '02, but never posted til recently, just read the threads. I really thought TRC was special, but the next wave of people that join may all hate the thing.

i've never hated on TRC... i've been singing it's praise since the day i burned that baby down onto cd... you'll never even see me hate on the voice... i thought it was a novel idea... the only complaints that i've ever had about TRC is that the voice isn't mixed higher and the length of "digital garden"...

the voice on TRC is so far down in the mix that it's hard to make out what it's saying, if you're not listening to it in a quiet room... if you've got it on in the car or as background music, the voice is hard to hear...

and "digital garden" ends too damn soon... should've been longer...
