Why do you want Prince to sound like very other track on the radio? When Prince produces you get the Prince sound and product. I dont want no Neptunes pile of beat laden crap for fucks sake. I want Prince. If you like the Neptunes so damn much turn on the radio and breath in some car exhaust. ... ***damn i swear, if prince got the neptunes to produce him, that might be the point where i stop being a completist... The Musicology CD is a return to form for Prince. Only time will tell if it is a great CD. Some people are so controlled by what others think that they cannot make up their minds on liking a CD. Turn the computer off and listen to the music. I liked Rave. I loved TRC . NEWS was cool. In 1998 when the ORG was new people "hated" Gold. Similar discussions were posted about production etc.Now Gold is "one of the greatest Prince albums ever." THIS IS SO GODDAMN TRUE!!!!! 555-4444 you're on coffee talk.

I just wonder how so many of the music experts on this site have time to work on their own albums when they sit on this computer and complain in the forums all day. I think the experts should put their musical and production skills to good use and show Prince what needs to be done to make the perfect album.

If the org was up and running in the 80's the likes of Sign/Parade and Lovesexy would have been slated too. Some people will never be satisfied

Folks it is what it is. It sounds like Prince wants it to sound. If that sound is not to your liking that's fine. The state of music in general would be more interesting if we had more people producing themselves instead of looking for the sound of the moment. Its so funny that so many on this site know just the right things prince should do. I guess u all will be inducted into the hall of fame anytime now.

tricky99, You took the words right out of my mouth. This CD sounds like prince wants it to sound. If he wanted an over or under produced CD then he would have made it sound that way. It is what he wants it to be. I though that this is what we liked about him. You have to except that he doesn't care to have hits, he just wants to make great music.

Is not this whole thread an excersise in futility. Prince has never and will never ever have an outside "Producer". He hasn't done it in 26 years so what makes you guys think he would even consider it now? (Hell the closest he came was when he was O(-> and he had "Prince" produce Rave) But really that is besides the point. The reason we love and respect our man so much is exactly because he doesn't sound like anybody else. I don't want Prince to sound like one of the Neptunes super produced acts, I want Prince to sound like Prince. I respect the man and his musical abilities far to much to question the production qualities of any of his albums.

simply put, IF Prince had someone else produce his album, it wouldn't be a Prince album would it?

WORD!! I think that is one of Prince's main messages to the next generations of musicians/performers. Seize the reigns of production and do what YOU want to do. Production is an infinitely variable field, just like guitar playing. 6 months to learn the basics- a lifetime to learn. But the TOOLS of production- mics, recorders, keyboards, etc. are much more affordable and accessible than they ever have been and the quality is unbelievable. Artists should learn to do their own thing. That's cool. Why chase the sound of the day, man? Prince got where he is be doing his own thing and makine THAT the sound of the day. It would be a betrayal of his artisitic vision to start chasing some contemporary "sound" now. The man has to do what he does. Let him be and groove on it.

LoveGoD LoveLifE LoveSexY I completely agree with your whole argument. I just gotta point out one thing. Although I understand the meaning of your post, the point of the neptunes is that they are very "underproducers" if U follow me. Minimalists. What I think U're referring to is when they remix trax for those "put-together" acts like britiny and the such...am I right? Prince has been producing for so long I'm sure he knows every trick of the trade. Prince's songs don't sound dated. They just don't sound like everything else. That's been Prince's policy since day one. Sometimes it's a BAD different, sometimes it's a GOOD different. In the studio, Prince knows what he's doin, He doesn't need hints from the likes of the Neptunes and such, no disrespect to them. I lov'em and wish Prince could co-produce a song with them...it'd be intresting. but, alas, will never happen.

chrisslope9 said: FutureShock said: Basically, what you're saying is a back-handed compliment, whether you mean it that way or not. So... if you're know you're not an expert and you know you don't know how to produce, then basically that means you don't know what you're talking about. Sure you can have an OPINION, but that doesn't mean you actually know what you're talking about. I just find it ironic that it seems that no matter what Prince does it's never quite good enough for some. I realize it's different complaints from different people. But think about this for second. First, Musicology was going to suck because well... somebody heard the single and didn't like it so of course that means the rest of the album was going to suck too. And besides, it was going to be a new Prince album, so of course it HAD to suck. Then, the tracklist was released, and people complained that the titles of the songs didn't sound good. So, quite naturally, the album was going to suck. And besides, it was a new Prince album, so it had to suck. And now this... the issue of the album Production. It's like "well... the album is pretty good after all BUT, the production still sucks!" And I'm just like... WHATEVER!!! It's just un-frickin-believable how some fans respond. It's like some people just aren't happy unless they have something to complain about. If the argument about Prince needing a "Producer" wasn't brought up EVERY SINGLE TIME PRINCE RELEASES A NEW ALBUM, I might actually be inclined to give that point of view some thought. But it happens EVERY time, and it's such a weak argument. Give it up! the reason why the arguement is brought up EVERY SINGLE TIME PRINCE RELEASES AN ALBUM , is because every single time Prince releases an album, the production style sounds so outdated. therefore, it is only natural that people with who are capable of hearing sounds with their ears to pick up on it . anyway, would it kill Prince to (god forgive me for suggesting this) try expierimenting with a differnent producer or two on ONE cd. the world wouldn't stop spinning if you did Prince and you could always go back and produce your next 40 cd's if it didn't work out just like the 40 you produced before it. [This message was edited Thu Apr 1 23:02:11 2004 by chrisslope9] Actually, I really would like for Prince to allow another well-known producer to produce one of his albums just so people would see how disastrous it would be and then stop making this silly argument with each new release. The bottom line is that the only good reason why some people want to hear someone else produce Prince's music is because those people for the most part are holding out some kind of latent desire to see Prince become "popular" again in the sense of being number 1 on the charts and have some kind of huge appeal to the masses again. What you all are suggesting is like someone saying to Picasso "Hey P, I know you draw all of those wonderful paintings, but I really think you ought to let this guy in Compton show you a couple of different colors and images you should use to make your paintings more popular... or at least to where your paintings would look better to me" See how ridiculous that sounds? Well that's what you all sound like to me. And that's really about all I have to say about the subject for this album. I'll wait until the next album before I have to make this same argument again... PEACE. "You've got to believe in something... why not believe in me?"

I like his production style but it's a limited sonic palette with a very distinctive stamp. I agree he could benefit from collaborating with other producers. It wouldn't kill him to try it once, just as an experiment. I know it's not gonna happen because it's not how he works, but I can fantasize.
NOT the fucking Neptunes though. They are played. Someone like Steve Albini, Butch Vig, or Rick Rubin. You better wake up, Stella. This is my town!

Yeah , let's have the Neptunes produce Prince - so Pharrell can tell him "no you don't sound like that , you sound like THIS ..." and play "Frontin."
No ? How about Kanye West . He can loop "If I Was Your Girlfriend" around a drum machine's beat ( like with Chaka's "Through The Wire" or Luther's "Superstar") , and call it his "new" direction in hip hop . Or how about Daniel Lanois ? I think the depressing sound with the jangling guitars is huge . Or Mutt Lange . They could do pop and market it as country - I mean , funk . "Man . I Feel Like A Symbol ." Woow !! There are basically four sounds on the radio right now , and they are all tired . The everpresent throwaway pop , the pop/r&b rap/hip hop made to sound "hard" by including sure- to-be edited profanity ( whassup , Ludacris ) , Lil Jon , and bands with bad white rappers - marketed as "Alternative." If Prince wants a "hit," he'll have a hit - if he decides to wait and play "I got next." Or he can challenge others to a game they think they can surely win , and then kick their asses . Ask Charlie Murphy . I got a bass guitar for my 21st birthday . That doesn't mean I can make "When Doves Cry" a better song .
