RUMOR: ?uestlove wants 2 be the drummer 4 Prince?

Strictly a rumor, but an interesting topic for discussion. The site I pulled it from (allhiphop.com) has been months ahead of some true rumors, but also misses at times. Figured true or not, it was worth posting:

Now, the word is Questlove of The Roots is a huge fan of Prince, you know the dude from the 80s that sold 17 million copies of Purple Rain. Not that the crew is breaking up, but we hear that Quest is really trying hard to be the drummer for the Purple One and would leave the group faster than you can say "Malik B" if ever blessed with the chance to do so. Must be nice. Speaking of the Roots, what happened to a root of the group Malik B? That was our boy!

?uestlove has always wanted to drum for Prince on at least one entire album. That's not really a big secret if you're a die-hard of The Roots as well. Malik B is recovering from crack addiction. I think he has one appearance on the upcoming LP, The Tipping Point.

Not a chance. Prince would be nutz 2 take Ahmir over John.

I would truly love to hear them on at least one studio track. His drumming on Erykah Badu's 'Penetentiary Philsophy' was enough to convince me that he could hang.

Of course it would (rock that is)

?uestlove is probably one of the best drummers ever. Johns not going anywhere I'm sure of that...but Prince would be a very lucky man to have Ahmir working with him

And anyone remotely familiar with him knows he is a huge Prince head as is D'Angelo and Common and Eryka Badu and that whole Philly/Roots crew

?uestlove is awesome, but this is pure fantasy for the time being. When has Prince ever done something like this when people come to him with their idea? It has to come from him...

Also, Blackwell's fine, but I really miss Michael Bland. That brother could throw sticks!

Anybody know if he's still performing?

you've got me really thinking about this neutral Ol' boy is good. No doubt about that. But beyond the twirly-twirl thing and the visual effects he provides are his chops that phenomenal? Case in point: His performance on Shhh! It looks good on camera, but he's a tad bit sloppy with it. He still can't whoop Michael B hmph!

I've seen Blackwell stomp that shit more than a few times now and I agree that his drumming Monday wasn't as ferocious and fierce as it usually is. But comparring ?loves drumming on Pennitentiary Philosophy (I absolutely LOVE this song btw..) to Blackwells less than Stellar drumming on Monday night....Blackwell k-i-c-k-s-h-i-s-a-s-s

Blackwell does kick his ass but the main reason I think ?uest could hang is because I've seen him play the beat for 777-9311 lick for lick. I think any drummer who can play that verbatim to the Linn Drum is worthy IMO.

Anxiety

It would be cool only because ?uest would more than likely hip Prince to some truly cool music - I read an interview with him in The Believer last year, and his tastes and attitudes regarding music are fantastic. However, just in terms of having a drummer in the band, Prince would have to be insane to let Blackwell go.

?uestlove is amazing. Just check out The Philadelphia Experiment.

He is one of the best pure groove drummers in the business.

Plus he has an encyclopedic memory of classic break beats and grooves that he can immediately recall at the drop of a hat.

I've never understood the big deal about Ahmir's skills on the kit. He's solid, but not dynamic.

See I disagree, I think that if you put them on two sets next to each other
?est is going to get eaten up. I mean he is a good pocket drummer but that really is it. I don't find a great deal of skill in his fills and that to me is what differentiates the drummers. Anyone can hold a pocket. But how do I make that pocket live and breathe. Blackwell has great pocket and we all have seen his fill and his showmanship. Honestly what would ?estlove bring to this party? I like him but he is no John Blackwell, Micheal Bland or Sheila E. Not by a long shot.
Peace

Wasn't there a story of ?uestlove's visit to PP where Prince told
him to "play the drums right", talkin' about his ackward style.???
Prince would be crazy to let Blackwell walk...he's the MVP of that band...
not easy to be, seeing how great the other musicians are...
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.
