The Hits Video Collection: VHS v DVD

Well, I bought it on VHS because I was offered it for about £1.50, so I couldn't refuse. I liked it but when I stuck it on after listening to my old Prince vinyl, the sound quality sounded so crap. It seeemd really flat, muted and muffled next to my old wax.

Now I know DVD is a digital format and can't recreate the analogue sounds of vinyl, but have the tracks been given a remaster to make them sound good? I'm very wary about buying another WB Prince DVD after the bumming they gave me with that worthless Purple Rain DVD.

Should I shell out for the DVD?

I've only got the hits on DVD...quality seems quite good.

But like I said, I haven't got much to compare it to. shrug

Well, I can only talk about the Region 2 DVD but I felt ripped off after buying it for £7 in the sales. The picture would be acceptable for a VHS, the sound quality would not. In fact, the onlyword I could use to describe the sound quality would be "impotent". It's not in widescreen of fullscreen but a strange inbetween that pleases no-one. It comes in a cardboard cover.

It is arse.

Hence, my nervousness about shelling out for "The Hits". I don't expect supersonic DTS fanfares, I just want nice sound quality! "Purple Rain" is the worst DVD I have ever come across. Here's to the August edition!

Yeah, in fact I have held-off on buying that DVD in hopes of a super remastered DVD (more likely to have extras).

Didn't The Hits DVD came out with The Hits/B-Sides collection though? I wouldn't expect it to be low-quality (or expect that it will ever be re-released in better condition) but again, I haven't bought it so I wouldn't know for sure.

I have the Hits DVD, was listening to it yesterday while cleaning the house. It sounds terrific, and the older hits are remastered (I believe) they sound very crisp and the bass is pumped up a bit. Overall, if you can get it, get it, you wont be sorry. The sound quality is WAY better than the Purple Rain DVD. Plus, it PRINCE! No collection is complete without it. Its way, WAY better than the bootleg "import" Sign of the Times DVD I bought recently.

There ain't nothin wrong with the sound or Picture on the Hits DVD(region 2 anyhow) the Problem lies in the Track selection. I mean you could've filled 3 discs with all his vids but this 1 disc has, well, a bit of a patchy collection!!! shrug

I've got both the VHS and the DVD of the hits.

The DVD is remarkably very much defenitely A LOT better than the VHS!
The VHS is lifeless and VERY flat in sound. I gave up watching it. Then I got the DVD (for free), and started to enjoy these clips all over again. OK, the DVD is not 21st century surround sound (or whatever), so people WILL complain ...

Ah-ha! I knew it wouldn't be amazing but I just wanted reassuring that it wasn't the crime that the VHS was.

Many Thanks

Need to keep an eye on ebay, then.
