Princinicity Thought I’d share an experience I had last night.
Running on fumes from the Regal Viewing (little sleep that night) I had to DJ a gig in San Fran for the new Oxygen Bar/Sushi and Sake lounge for their Press Party. I DJ chill beats/triphop/ambient. I was supposed to warm up for a band called digitonal…basically 2 laptop guys and some other gear. Really beautiful stuff. I played Musicology before my warm up…just the first 3 songs. By song one…I had somebody asking if this was the new Prince. Just had put it on and someone was already digging it. During my break, I went past a local bar and Purple Rain was playing from the jukebox. I stopped and swooned thinking about the concert the night before (like it had left my head-NOT) and realized I may have heard that song for the last time live the night before. After their set, Not knowing how I could possibly top the beautiful music I heard, I was going to go back on when one of the gals who ran the O2 bar asked for Prince. So, I took an extended break and played Musicology all the way through. They all loved it! All heads were nodding to the music. In line for wine, someone asked who was playing. When I said Prince she was like I told her it’s the new single and new album. She had no idea. (neither did someone who claimed he went beyond fan (had symbol tattoos all over the place)…but had heard nothing of the tour or album... ) The girl in line asked if this was his revised spiritual self. I said this was but that this wasn’t what she was thinking of (I think TRC). This was new, and though spiritual in some of the songs , there was no overt religious message. I got several requests asking what I was playing and if I can make them a copy (imagine asking a DJ to make you a copy) I said if they liked the music, go to the website…it’s all there. The new single went over very well. Hell, all of Musicology went over very well. After playing Musicology, I went back to my chill stuff, the same gal who requested P before was doing it again. All I had on me was Musicology…but didn’t want to play it again. Again, she kept bothering me. I was like “Where’s NEWS?” If she asks me one more time…she’s going to get what she asked for (and some schooling in manners) and it’ll clear ‘em out of here. That or the War…but it was not in it’s case. Love NEWS myself…but I knew that’d clear em out. Then like a ray of purple sunshine, I located a compilation of P-music that I was going to listen to on my way to the Regal show. At least now if I was going to play prince I could do it proper. Mentioning I found some P music…I was asked do you have Lady Cab Driver? I said Abso-freeking-lutely…as it was on that compilation…and it was all over after that. We funked for 2 more hours (LCD got asked for 2ce) I had to go between that and Musicology. And just playing him, brought even more people off the street. So we all heard Musicology, Illusion, Coma, Pimp and Circumstance and a Million Days like 4 times throughout the evening. Along with Billy Jack Bitch (ext), Lets go crazy (ext), Cindy C, Superfunky.., Joy in Repetition, Sex Shooter, Kiss (ext), Rave unto (remix), Let it go, Scarlett Pussy, Something in the water. Dancing to it all. I am sure that most had not even heard half of the “old” stuff. I’ve not had this much Princinicity ever. I’m sure others experienced this phenomenon…where you have done your share in getting connected (going to the concert, joining the club, buying his music recently etc)…and then the purple stars just do the rest. I thought I was Princed out…I was wrong. Some got schooled last night...they just HAD to be taught! Schools now out and I am tired and need to take a bath to wash off all this funk!
