Now that Prince has recaptured the imagination with his brilliant musicmanship, I wish the intellect that we're so accustomed to would also reflect his songwriting abilities.

Am I the only one who thinks that Prince's writing style is now a bit cheesy??!! I mean, where's the subtlety? He doesn't really write deep songs anymore. Now he either writes cheesy, popcorn lyrics or wants to preach all the time. And it's not deep or subtle.

Any ideas???

His songwriting is GREAT and that is that! So what his music is maybe a little different now but that is ok! Prince loves change! As his life changes so does he! So keep it to your self!

I don't want to flat out tell you that you are wrong but you are. Prince's lyrics aren't much better or worse than they've ever been. I'll tell you what, give me 3 cheesy lines of lyrics from the new album and I'll give you 3 equally cheesy lines from and older album.

I am amazed by his lyrics all the time.

sometimes I feel like he should have taken a little more time with a line or two.


But man how can we expect him to keep coming up with new ways to say things , it is amazing

There are very few thought provoking songs out there now.(by other artist)

I agree that Prince has been having some lyric problems with releases like ONA so even though I haven't heard the new album I guessing there are some lame lines.

There are some great lyrics and some lame lyrics just like every Prince album.

My only criticism of the lyrics is that the chorus on Call My Name is pretty damn lame (although I love the song).

It might help to define what you consider 'lyrically lame'. He definitely has them. But this is not recent. Prince has always had a mixture of cheesy, preachy, deep, subtle, and overtly in your face lyrics. I think what is most important, is whether or not the song is effective. Deep and subtle doesn't mean quality. Some might find it to be arrogant. Songs that are direct and to the point and not seemingly clever can still be effective songs.

'God' was preachy and and not very deep. But a gorgeous song and got across the message he intended. The chorus for 'Lets Go Crazy' is about as cheesy as it gets (as was joked about in purple rain). 'Ronnie Talk 2 Russia' was cheesy and in your face. 'The Love We Make' was very deep and full of subtleties. I don't see how you can call out recent work while not recalling those same examples in his earlier work.

I have 2 totally agree! Musicolgy is the shit musically. But the lyrics I find kinda lame!! I mean he says he can't stop writing songs about her but I didn't really FEEL any of the songs he wrote 4 her!! Nothing like Soul Sanctuary, FLSMW, Lets Have a Baby,Dreamin' About U, Saviour etc.....
Don't get me wrong I do LOVE this CD. & I do like the lyrics I just don't LOVE them like usual.
& by the way I haven't taken the Musicology CD out of my car stereo since I got it!!! I LOVE IT!!!!

i thought that the lyrics sounded a little cheesy at first, but it is more the phrasing than the lyrics..

like war drums beat in babylon - sounds a little cheesy, but if you read the lyrics of the entire song, it is not cheesy at all.

things i dont care for are lines that include terms like bridal path door

but over all, he has some great TOPICS for his songs. he addresses politics which i like in his music (sign o the times, america) he sings about sleeping with his woman (on the couch) he sings about struggle in his relationship (what do u want me 2 do)
