What is SOul? Im starting to come to the conclusion that some things require "SOUL" to get into. Like the Musicology single. If you have any ounce of SOUL what's so ever, the BASS line alone will pull you in. James Brown homage or not. Repetitive or not. Some things naturally grab those of us with SOUL. Not to come off as a elitist, that's not what im trying to do here. It's a natural thing that I cant really describe. You know it when you have it. Everybody put on the title track again and close your eyes. This is the SOUL detector. There are those who understand and those who will not.

I agree 100%. However, many of the fans here didn't get into Prince when Sexy Dancer and Let's Work were the album cuts you had to hear back in the day. As much as MTV was his vehicle into mainstream with Little Red Corvette I think it also kinda ruined the entire perspective for those who weren't down with Prince's sound from day one.
**disclaimer** not saying you had to be a fan since 1978 to be appreciative of Prince's soul. But it seems a lot of the fans weren't exposed to grooves like Musicology during Prince's creative peaks. [This message was edited Wed Mar 31 22:01:11 2004 by psykosoul]

The Musicolgy is better than Lovesexy topic inspired this thread. I saw people responding to it saying they didn't see the big deal with Eye No and Dance on which are the heavier tracks on the album. Annestesia, Lovesexy, I wish U heaven, which I love, are obviously lighter tunes. If you are naturally a person who gravitates towards more Soulful stuff, a la Houssquake, Exodus...then Musicology as a single should be a breath of fresh air. However, I love the psychedelia rock side of Prince as well.

I wasn't always a fan of P's. I discovered him around 1999 and went backwards. In any case I think you are right that there is an element here that is simply missing the "soul" peice you mention.
I mean several people have said Musicology is horrible...which is simply crazy and out of touch with RB or Soul music. First the song plays homage to Prices forfathers..second it is a tight groove with kick ass horns to boot, and the music stops and starts again on Princes signal I for one enjoy Princes vast and broad range of music. When he writes a good song it is good. She Always In my Hair, When Doves Cry, Sign of the Times, Kiss, Erotic City, The Ballad of Dorthy Parker, Adore, How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore, I wish U Heaven, Head, 1999...I mean I could go on...those songs are sheer brilliance regardless of there very different styles. Just like songs like Ronie Talk to Russia, Thunder, the entire Chaos & Disorder CD, Princes cover of that Cheryl crow song & Rave Un2 the joy fantastic were awful awful songs. Now those were bad People need to learn the difference between liking/disliking the style of a record RB, Rock, Pop whatever from a song that is bad Just because you don't particularlly care for the song in this thread Musicology doesn't mean its weak We have heard weak efforts from Prince far too many of them over the last 10 years and Musicology is not one of them..that song getthe body movin If yours don't move than its probably because you are missing some soul Dance... Let me see you dance

This is silly. I have SOUL. Why don't u stick on an Otis Redding record and then u'll hear soul. Following this, listen to 'Shaky Ground' by The Temptations and u'll hear funk. The way u will know it's funk is because u will be marching around your room stomping your feet. If u put Musicology on directly after this record I guarantee it won't feel so impressive. Call My Name, now that has some real Al Green-esque soul.

That it is one of the albums that P-Funk's Eddie Hazel plays on. And 'shaky ground' features Eddie Hazel. As far as the topic itself. I dont think its silly at all. We all vibe off of different tones and I think the title track is very Soulful. Some people will not feel it. Soulful yes, Temptations Soul..... no.

Prince is a house with many doors. We are all in the house but we came in different doors. Please refrain from saying how awful some song is as if that is a fact. Its just an opinion. I like C&D and ronnie talk to russia. Just because u don't doesn't make them awful.

I like the expression "house with many doors", that's really cool. Prince reminds me of, well me! One, he's a genius , and 2 he is not stuck to one type of music. I'll play some Frank Sinatra and then be pump-n some Average White Band an hour later. Kirk: "KHAAANNNN! KHAAANNNN!"

I totally agree.
I think many are missing the point of the album...it's quite soulful and earthy and people are really not getting it cause they prefer Rave or what have you. And they'll never get it, cause they don't have it themselves. However, I think those people are in the minority fortunately...most of the reviews I've seen have been very favourable.
