The One-Woman 'Dirty Mind' Brigade™ sums up "Musicology" (longish!)

...awright. i had typed up my review of the album once, but it didn't go through cuz i got an error message. pissed here's to hopin it goes through this time.

WARNING: if you are gonna wait till the album comes out in a few weeks and don't wanna be surprised by anything, or are currently in a state of "likeomgthealbumSUX!!!111oneone!!11", then DO NOT read past this warning message. i mean it, NO PEEKING AT MY REVIEW! resist the urge...and stuff. no no no!

whistling whistling whistling

...so you wish to know what i think of musicology, hm? well, here goes. track by track:

musicology: more than likely you know how this sounds.

illusion, coma, pimp & circumstance: best. song title. ev-errrrr. evillol that, and this is a really nice narrative/story-type cut. that, and it's kinna humorous. i currently have a quote from this song as my signature, cuz it has me crackin up.

a million days: if "dolphin" and "little red corvette" went to a hotel and had a quickie, this song would be the offspring of that encounter. mr.green

life o' the party: the music/beat in this song annoys me to death, ya'll. lyrically, it's okay.

call my name: this is some babymakin/quiet storm stuff here. it ain't within the league of say, "adore" or "do me, baby", but it holds its own.

cinnamon girl: another "dolphin"-esque track.

what do u want me 2 do?: most of ya'll may be familiar with this one, thanx to the npgmc and uh, other means. mr.green

the marrying kind: ain't too familiar with this cut yet, 'cept for the fact that it segues flawlessly into...

if eye was the man in ur life: ...which i'm not familiar with yet, either. i've listened to this album 1½ times. give me time and i'll come back and talk about these two a bit mo' redface

on the couch: ladies, you'll dig this one. ya'll shoulda heard it live last night...had me grinnin at both ends. horny

dear mr. man: very thought-provoking track. it's like a combination of 90% "mercy mercy me (the ecology)" or "inner city blues" by marvin gaye, and 10% "partyup", in the effect that it's like a protest/ills-of-the-world kinda song.

reflection: ya'll should know about this one, too.

highlights: overall, the album sounds very nice. don't matter what era you like the most, there's a bit of sumfin for damn near everybody on here. this album is definitely another "grower", for those of ya'll who need to spin an album more than once.

lowlights: a lot of the songs have beats/music that are either annoying or uninspired, like prince is tryin his damndest to be on b-96 or sum chit. that, and his usage of some new-skool slang makes me kinna cringe--like if i were talkin to an older relative and they decide to drop the "crunk" bomb in mid-conversation, y'know. it's like "wha?" whofarted lol

overall (1 to 10 stars): star star star star ½

imo, for those of you who are hoping for a hit song to come off of this album, think again cuz it ain't happenin--"call my name" might have a chance at sumfin, but i dunno. this is all just my opinion here, so don't read into it all extra-close.

...and that's my twocents about it all. peace!

thumbs up!

Great review. And i have added confidence in saying that because it's very similar to my first review - great minds think alike, and all wink

Except...i never would've guessed that after what appeared to be quite a complimentary review it only merited 4 an a half stars out of 10. eek

Oh yeah, and i love that "boy i was fine back in the day!" Always makes me smile. smile

Well, I will say there are at least two potential hits on this album. Namely, A Million Days and What Do You Want Me 2 Do? (on R&B radio). Will they be hits? I doubt it. But we'll see how Sony pushes this to the public and radio.
