Best since Sign of the Times. Truly.

I went to the screening in NY a few hours ago, having read all the reports on here about the album and, frankly, feeling a little glum. The Rave, NPS comparisons were really getting me nervous, and I was starting to think that if I liked "On the Couch" as much as I liked it at the Club Black show, I would be satisfied. That show had me falling in love with Prince again, and the screening just reaffirmed it, especially after that AMAZING acoustic set we were denied at CB (folks who were there, you know what I"m talking about). I slipped the CD in my pocket, headed home to Brooklyn, opened a beer, put on the headphones and prepared for the comedown, and...

...and, I really, truly, completely am confused now about how many intelligent-sounding, passionate Prince fans could even begin to slag this CD. And yet, I've been so cynical after NEWS and everything crappy thing from the music club (including, just to give you my frame of reference, SM Groove, Golden Parachute, Props 'n Pounds (ugggggh), Judas Smile, Peace....as opposed to the few I liked, When I Lay My Hands, U Make My Sunshine, Beautiful Strange, Avalanche and the MUSIC on Rainbow Children) It was a lot of lame programming and tossed-off sounding tracks, or gorgeous music with no lyrical anchor...I didn't really think I could like Prince like this again.

And yet, this album is amazing, dense, beautiful, not perfectly produced (with, like many have said, a FEW bad programming choices), but most importantly.....passionate. His heart is in this shit through and through, from the thought-out narrative of Illusion, Pimp, etc. to the gorgeous melody of Milions Days to the funky vocal layering in everything to the jazzy breakdown in If I Was the Man to the political fire of Dear Mr. Man to the heartbreaking finale of Reflection. Also, whoever's been talking down the lack of a band is straight-up wrong. They are here, in just the right doses.

And, no, Life of the Party is not bad at all...in fact, the beat's kinda banging. If anything, Musicology's the weak link here, which I think is what set the tone for a lot of (justified) doubt. But 1 out of 12 ain't bad, and that one is still better than anything on Rave or Emancipation.

I'm really confused by the haters. Mostly, what are they looking for? This is Prince how I want him, all grown up, full of contradictions, still examining, still trying to get in her pants. I've said a lot of half-hearted shit on here in the last few years, and to quote Mikey from the Goonies, I'm taking 'em back, I'm taking them all back.

So you're saying this is his best work since Sign? You said it in the title, but not in the review....better than Lovesexy?

Yeah, sorry, I'm a little brainfried wink

I like it better than Lovesexy, but I was never a huge fan of that CD, which I know puts me in the minority around here. This ablum really touches on elements from all his work, which I love, just a really fantastic balance, but it's fueled by real ideas and feelings rather than just opportunistic nostalgia. On second listen, my only overall gripe is that the treble's a little low throughout, creating a slightly muffled sound. Waaaaay better IMO than Emancipation, Rave, TRC, NPS (obviously), and I think it just barely has an edge over TGE.

And thanks for the Goonies expertise!

THANKS FOR THE REVIEW.

to me, nothing can be better than lovesexy. that album is so amazingly special to me, just as a piece of music, not to mention what it means to me personally.

i can't put musicology on a shelf with that album. not yet anyway.

but it's leagues - LEAGUES - better than anything he's put out in the past ten years. it's more engaging, more accessible, it has more personality, it has more melody, more sophistication, more playfulness...to say it's like rave or NPS is just silly.

And just to add to that, I don't think anything on here comes close to Alphabet Street or Eye Know or Wish You Heaven. If he's faltered in anything over the years, it's in creating instant classic tunes. You have to listen to this album in a different way, it's just really consistent and works really nicely as a whole.

Wow, I love albums like Emancipation and TGE, so this sounds like something I'll really enjoy.

Prince's overly jazzy TRC material never did really suit me anyway compared to some classic pop/rock/funk etc. sounds.

This is really great to hear.

musicology is just a good Prince album, nothing more but nothing less

I LOVE about 4 songs off it and at this point of his incredible
career I feel more than satisfied

the songs I like are:

the marrying kind plus If I was the man in your life are my absolute favourites

on the coach is gorgeous and bluesy, supremely sung

dear mr. man is GREAT too

There are some outstanding songs on this album, but there's no way it's up to the standard of Lovesexy. IMO it ain't musically anywhere near TRC either, and i think as a pop album, it's not as good as the Gold Experience.

But it's a damn solid album with some outstanding tracks and one piss poor one. It's streets ahead of Rave.

Oh, and i thought your review was a good one - very evocative - and then you had to go and use the term "haters" . lol

Spot on with that list! definetly prefer the second half more

I know it's getting too picky but I think it is well recorded and sounds great on my hi-fi, especially when compared to TRC which sounds 'compressed' and all digital to me when listening on a revealing system.

where's Mindflux with that amazing stereo he has....

Hmmm its hard to judge at this early stage, but this cd has definitely got more chart potential than anything he has released since diamonds and pearls! RAVE attempted this and failed, if this fails i will truely b disappointed as this is a million times better than rave! I would say this album could give us some of prince's biggest hits with great promotion!

1 A million DAys
2 Cinnamon Girl
3 Dear Mr Man
4 Musicology
5 Call my Name

Those should all be released as singles with great videos! Along with the biggest prince tour in a decade this cd should sell well! Possibly his biggest seller since Diamonds and Pearls, im guessing 4million worldwide!

So what? Let him feel that way if he really does.

All it means is that he'll enjoy his copy a lot more than others.

I only hope I can be so lucky as to feel the same way about the album when I get my copy.

An album as amazing as SOTT? Man, I'd give anything to feel that way about a new Prince CD. I envy this guy.

Yeah, right, except the last time I said that was over 10 years ago.

In the light of day, after a little sleep, I admit I may have been a little bit carried away the concert, but I'm still loving the hell out of it. Definitely give it a spin with some good headphones, the vocal tracks are really incredible.

This album made me listen from beginning to end.Loved it on first listen.
It should get plenty of airplay .

Man it sure felt good seeing that show last night and seeing all of the Prince fans, old and new, just feeling it.

The nightcap was Musicology the CD .I listened to it on the 1hr plus drive home and getting to Cinnamon Girl and pressing the replay button.

The real litmus test for me is What 2 U Want Me 2 Do...my god, I love this track. It sounds like old Prince, but with a slight new twist. And, yeah, people keep comparing the rockier stuff like CG to C&D, Dolphin, etc., but I think these are so much better. They're all a bit more grounded, and the slight cheese factor doesn't overwhelm the songs. And am I crazy, or is Blackwell all over this thing?

I agree-- this album is hot! These are some of Prince's best lyrics and ideas in years. The new album only drags for me a couple of times (two ballads, and even those are pretty good-- Call My Name being one of them). I loved THE RAINBOW CHILDREN, which to me sounded fresh, and this album sounds fresh again. Barring a couple of instrumental albums and a live collection (which was great), Prince seems to be on a roll. I think the next single should be WHAT DO U WANT ME TO DO-- that song is a hit. Illusion, Coma, Pimp and Circumstance is a great track. This album is so much fun, and it has that feel-- it has the spark ("Don't you miss that feeling music gave ya, back in the day?"). This is it, and no annoying vocal intros like "Sex me baby, Sex me not," or "Every day is a winding-winding road"-- the mark of a horrid groove.

Anxiety

I wish the title of this thread could be changed to "Best Since O+>. Truly."

Now, don't get me wrong. I love love LOVE Come. I love Chaos & Disorder (I know, I know...tastes are subjective, lay off me dammit). There are parts of The Gold Experience I think are absolutely brilliant.

But ya know what? Since Musicology fell into my sweaty little paws last night, I've listened to it about six times. Hell, I went to sleep listening to the damn thing last night. And I'm ABOUT to play it again. lol

And I gotta ask myself...when's the last time I played a Prince album over and over as soon as I got it? Answer: the O+> album. It took me a few years to warm up to the Come album. I like Chaos & Disorder a lot, but it didn't flip me upside down...it's pretty much what I wanna listen to when I'm sick of hearing everything else. TGE took a long time to warm up to, and quite frankly, there's a lot on that album that just plain gets on my nerves.

And the symbol album has a lot of weak stuff on it too - it's big and bloated and garish - but there was a lot to be excited about when you heard it right outta the gate, and there was tons of stuff to dig into - lyrically, musically, stylistically...and that brings me to Musicology.

Prince isn't wasting anyone's time on this album. It's under fifty minutes. It's just a dozen songs long. Nothing goes on too long or meanders into jam band noodling territory. It's a pop album. No excesses, no indulgences. He's gotten back to crafting music for people to enjoy. And it doesn't sound a bit compromised to me (unlike, say, Rave).

Comparing Musicology to SOTT to me is a bit like comparing the best of any given Beatle's solo work to Abbey Road or The White Album. No matter how good the latter day stuff might be, the deed's been done, the mark's been made, and ya can't take something to a higher level that's already hit such a glorious ceiling. And really, why would ya want him to? Better to move out of the house and find a new, higher ceiling to hit. Maybe one with a bit less stucco. Ouch.

I would love it if this comeback would validate all the amazing yet overlooked material Prince recorded in the nineties up through the past few years. If so-called "casual music lovers" were to start burrowing around for stuff like TRC and Come and Xpectation the way everyone used to clamor for a bootleg copy of The Black Album back in the day, then I think Prince has done himself some justice.

Jury's out for me. I've listened to a few times, and there are some tracks I really like. Musicology grows, Call My Name and On the Couch are gorgeous ballads (and I was never a huge fan of songs like Adore and Insatiable - I think as a teenager those didn't resonate with me as much). I think Life 'O the Party is more fun than people are giving it credit for on the site. Also am really liking Dear Mr. Man and Reflection.

HOWEVER, there are definitely some low-lights. A Million Days has the potential to make me tear my hair out, and If Eye was the Man in Ur Life is pretty abysmal. I hope they'll grow on me. But their operatic overproduction is already grating pretty hard.

I think that overall it's a solid, nice album. But I have to agree with some who have said that what the album is lacking is a classic. Just that one song that'll elevate it from a perfectly acceptable release to something that'll stick around.

After seeing the astonishing concert last night, I can't help thinking a hypothetical: if he was playing a big venue in 10 years, is there anything off Musicology that when he kicks into it, people would go ape-shit? Probably not.

No, seriously, his catalogue is so vast and varied, at this point there's NO set consensus about what's the best/worst and that's a good thing, right?

Anxiety, you really nailed some stuff in there. I probably would change this to best since TGE, which I happen to love more than the Symbol album. Upon further listening to Musicology, I'm not sure it beats TGE, but it's damn close, and you're right, I keep putting it back on. I think people freak out cuz there aren't any "hits" on it, but that's not something that bothers me anymore. As he says on "Reflection," what does one thing have to do with the other. "Hits" and "art." They can intersect, repeatedly in a true genius' career, but are not dependent on each other.

I agree for the most part

Clearly his strongest disc since Diamonds and Pearls (in terms of a collection) Perhaps his best since Lovesexy. We shall see I've only listned to it 4 or 5 times yet lol

I don't understand the problem many have with the song Musicology. Its a hot simple dance record...and it will be the record that introduces him back to everyone. RB records always cross over as opposed to other way around. Musicology is/was the way to give him instant credibility. And with the RB & Rap dominate the charts it was a logical and wise decision

But there is plenty more. I don't under stand somes fasination with A million Days and thers with Pimp & Circumstance. Or for that matter Reflection. Those are the true filler records on this disc if there are any

The rest are simply outstandig tracks. If I was the man in your life is simply the best and most absurdly well done song Prince has done in years!!!

Way to go P!!!

The Chocolate Invasion is also very strong...I was very suprised b the quality of that disc. I would not be shocked to see a major pick up that record as well...stay tuned

I'm glad to see people coming out of the woodwork as fans of the album. Think it's going to be one of those slow-growers for some people (or not, who knows)

Yeah, I think between the best of the slaughterhouse and chocoloate invasion (I guess that would be "High"?), he would've had a really nice album.
