Goddammit! I want the new album

Unfortunately, my OS is Windows 98, so I can't get the new downloads.

You can only play the new copy protected NPGMC downloads with Windows Media Player 9.
and you can only get Windows Media Player 9 if you have Windows 98SE or higher
(the newest version you can get with Windows 98 is Windows Media Player 7.1)
So I'm stuck. I could download the new tracks, but I wouldn't be able to listen to them.

mad (sorry just had to vent there for a minute)
I'm sure I'll be able to "get round" the problem later... but I shouldn't need to resort to that.

The files can be converted to mp3 without too much trouble. If you know someone with a computer with Windows Media Player 9 installed;

1. Purchase & Download the files to that computer
2. Burn them to CD from within Windows Media Player 9
3. Take that CD and rip it into mp3 or WAV format with a program like CD-Ex
4. Since Musicology doesnt seem to be in CDDB yet, you will have to re-name the files manually.

thats it.

I tried it, and it works.

Sounds like a good plan to get the tracks from .wma onto a CD and my mp3 player. Is Windows Media Player 9 also a CD burning program at no extra cost?

Yes, you can burn music files to CD with windows media player. It's not a full-featured program like Nero, but it does the trick for audio cd's. Interestingly though, during the burning process, it first converts all the files to (wav?) then burns them to disc. It's gotta be temporarily saving those files somewhere, though I couldn't find where. That would at least save you from wasting a CD.

I also read on discussion boards where people have used Nero 5.5 to create an image of the tracks then extract from that. I've never been able to get that to work.

Some folks aren't getting shows anywhere near them. I'm fortunate enough that my city is getting the movie theater simulcast tonight, but not everyone is. Some cities aren't scheduled for a show for a good long while, while others are not getting one at all. Besides, who really wants to wait when it is available now?

confused I appreciate that the majority of people have PCs, but for my work and out of principle I have a mac. I am loathe to download the album and to find out that I cannot play it. I have read the systems requirements and it states that it 'might' not work on a mac. Can anyone enlighten me on this point?

Just save your money (do buy the CD, but just don't waste money on crap quality downloads from the NPGMC) it's for free and in wave files (lossless for the idiots who don't know what wave files are) on a.b.m.p...

Just go to Kazaa and get mp3s of the Musicology tracks. I saw 'em on there this morning.

Ah, good for the NPGMC!! They're acting like a Big Time Corporation now. I'm sure plenty of people will be ripping either the WMAs or the CDs into mp3s tonight....I think it's assy as hell that they use a format that doesn't work on a Mac - arrogant and uncaring.

But I know, it's a business, I shouldn't take it personally.

BTW, it's not true the files can only be burned with Windows Media 9. I did it with Creator Classic from Rokio Easy CD and DVD Creator 6. Of course, I do have WM 9, so maybe you need both to do it.

You don't need to install the actual "Windows Media Player 9" application, you can just install the codec.

Don't feel so bad, I haven't downloaded it yet either. Although yesterday I finally heard the title track, Musicology, on the radio! I'm waiting until the official release date to hear it all. Hope I survive long enough. nutty

I have heard the album now.
Since I first started this thread I found out that you can indeed download and play the NPGMC
files on older versions of Windows Media Player, you just can't burn them to disc (as earlier
versions didn't have that ability). So I have been listening to the album while I've been using
my PC,
