Which Version of "Purple Rain" Is Your Favorite? And what guitar was Prince using?
I especially like the version he did on the Rave N 2 2000 concert. He was using the blue O+> guitar and his solo was awesome. The different effects he was using were amazing. I've recently picked up on the different sounds his guitars have. Like on the Grammy performance I was trying to figure out why he switched, but now I see why (although I personally believe one of the cloud guitars would've sounded much better for the solo at the end of "Let's Go Crazy." ) Also, what is it called when Prince his a guitar pedal and makes his guitar sound kinda spacey like his Linn Drums?

I have 2 say, i did love that version of "Purple rain" but when i watch "LoVEsExY", it sounds so much more rocky, and watching him getting really emotional, is my fav!! But i also love the grammys version, when i first watched It, i thought it was too slow and beyonce was singing far much, but now i love it . p.s. I also love the 18min version of Purplerain, on the prince & revolution love video, that is sooooo amazing!!!!! i love all versions [This message was edited Thu Mar 25 14:24:41 2004 by andykeen] Keenmeister

AMA's '85 prob.
Only thing i didnt like was when he started screetching during "Ooooooh Aoooooh AOooooo" at the end. But.....wow. "...because no-one gets there alone." - "...I like the floor. It's the only thing that seems real."

The version from Rotterdam on the Diamonds & Pearls Tour (May 28, 1992) is awesome. He starts it with an extended intro that I really love. The song goes on for almost nine minutes.

The 1985 American Music Awards definately.
a kick-ass, from the heart, performance letting rip with a SEARING guitar solo on the white cloud that ive yet 2 hear him better live. Then, just 4 added good-measure he goes all rock n roll and kicks the fuck outta the mic stand cuz it's in his way. Just an AWESOME performance at the height of Purple Rain 'fever'. I cant fault it. Syracuse '85 was the best, I think. It went from cool to jazz and then to rock with a little gospel thrown in. Plus, I am partial to looooong versions of his songs. I think that clocked in at about 10-12 minutes.

AMA's '85. Hands down.
This is the only version I can listen to... besides the Lovesexy tour. Lovesexy Funkateer

The original, at First Avenue. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

The Live 1985ive concert in Syracuse, NY....
THE BEST EVER!!!! "So strange that no one stayed at the end of the Parade..." - Wendy & Lisa's "Song About" on their 1987 self-titled album.

You know, guitars themselves don't have that much of a distinctive sound when used for overdriven distortion...
It hardly matters what guitar he's playing: the variations in sound are more due to the amplification, it's mic'ing, the EQ settings and the amount of effects.

I ain't never seen a better version than on the Prince and the Revolution Live video, 1985. It just kicks ass from beginning to end.
I even love it when he comes in with the vocals a little early at one point and tries to cover it up by pulling a funky face (just before the, "Honey i know, i know, i know..."

Indeed, to me the August 3rd 1983 version is the only true version... The rest are pretty cool too, but this is just the one... Neversin. O(+>NIИ<+)O

I've always liked the Nude tour version and the version he played on the album tour the best. It's funny, I love the live versions of thesong, but for some reason I've never been a fan of the album version. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 6, 6...

The final performance of the Purple Rain tour. That version of Purple Rain blows me away...the first time I heard it, it brought me to tears.

Does anyone knows what it is when Prince makes his guitar sound spacey-like? Kinda like the effect you hear on the Linn Drums?

I got the video. Took shot during the Purple Rain Tour in March 30, 1985. It's all started when, Wendy played her gutair as a start. Then the rest of the performers including Shelia E.
Prince came out with a dark purple hooded cape, black pants and playing his first guitar. Then He came out later with a custome made white guitar. It was sweet! "Welcome 2 The Dawn!"

it's called a "flanger", or perhaps a "phaser"...depends which sound you mean. it's one of the two, or both, they're pretty similar.

Hard question. I could probably make a triple CD-R with all the versions i've got on bootlegs!
I'll go for Syracuse though.
