Prince needs to record more rock, but not happy rock It would be cool for Prince to record an album that's more rock influenced, but it's gotta be done a certain way. I love songs like Endorphinemachine, Interactive, Peach, Let's Go Crazy, etc. But I'd like for Prince to add a more serious tone to his rock music, like he did with Bambi and I'm Yours. I think it would register a bit better with listeners. Prince needs more attitude in his music, and I think that's a big part of what's missing. It's time for a Prince album with a holy shit!, kick in the teeth, get fucked type of sound. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

Do you mean like a Lenny Kravitz ("Mr. Cab Driver, fuck you! I'm a survivor") style of song?
If so, then hell yeah! | |

Happy rock is the kind of rock you can play with a smile on your face. I wanna see Prince play rock with a pissed off mug. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

You don't think he can achieve this with an R&B/Funk album? [This message was edited Fri Mar 26 11:28:40 2004 by Joi]

Its been said that "Dark" rock has been the most effective in terms of longevity and influence, I think Malcolm Mclaren was to of said this. He was referring to Hendrix, the Blues, Led Zep, Black Sabbath etc.
Whether people associate more emotionally to a sad/dark song is debatable, in Prince's case these songs may be along the lines of The Cross/SOTT/Darling Nikki.

I wish Hey Ya had been Prince's song. It's retro but modern at the same time.
Musicology is too old school. The reactions to it on the radio are mixed. I was listening to a station that played it and asked for feedback. Some thought it was jam. Others say its corny and old sounding...

I think that would be great. Certainly he is capable of it. Maybe Prince needs someone to expose him to some different kinds of music like Wendy & Lisa did in the '80s. He seems to be stagnating somewhat.

I don't think it' s a matter of exposure but rather inspiration. That kind of music comes from dissatisfaction, unhappiness, and ambition among other things. Apparently that's not where he's at right now.

what, too much funk??? I'm hoping that he stays in this groove! And what listeners are you referring to? It certainly wouldn't register better with the folks I know. There's a lot of information in this post...

That's a recent song and it's pretty negative. I think it would have been cool for Prince to wail on guitar on that one. I think the thing is that hard rock is one of the more neglected areas in Prince's music. When he does it it's great but I wish he'd do it more often.

i actually kindof agree w/ this. my favorite Prince tracks tend to be the darker, more intense ones, like When Doves Cry, Joy in Repetition, Pheromone, things like that.

Who the fuck needs rock? I think they should just burn all the guitars in the world and give everybody a voucher ticket to the drum machine store.

I've heard that Musicology, the album, is set to have some rocky moments on it.

Prince never took his rock side to where I thought he was always capable of.
I always wished he would've done a dark rockish experimental type of thing, whenever he tried to do the rock thing it always seemed light in the ass. I guess all hopes for that is gone, damn Prince if you're reading this let me produce some of your shit.

You mean like Marilyn Manson kinda dark rock?
Somehow early Prince (in bikini briefs, fucking his guitar on stage) reminds me a lot of Marilyn. Well, actually, it's the other way around. I think Marilyn HAS been influence by Prince to some degree. Man That You Fear makes me think of Gold, F*** Frankie makes me think of Orgasm taken to the next degree. The entire vibe of Portrait Of An American Family seems Prince Rockish to me. So I've grown quite fond of Marilyn Manson. To my mind, he picked up where Prince left off and continued/build from there with the same kinda edge Prince used to have. It rocks, but you can still dance and sing along to it. As for Prince himself doing rock, I would love it. But I have to agree with the others on this thread that he just doen't seem to have it in him anymore. I like Prince's funky stuff as well, though, so... [This message was edited Sat Mar 27 3:10:39 2004 by scififilmnerd] FREE THE 29 MAY 1993 COME CONFIGURATION!

Prince tried the Nine Inch Nails thing with Loose; and that was only mildly interesting. When he is happy he makes better music. Remember Black Album? '
There's Other's Here With Us is that kind of song. All you others say Hell Yea!!

You don't think he can achieve this with an R&B/Funk album? Nope. He needs to get back to the nasty guitar stuff if he wants to make an impact. He can't be boring anymore. Besides, his funk and R&B ain't what it used to be. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "
