If Prince isn't going to play his funky nasty stuff anymore then what's stoppin' others from adopting these songs? I heard a great modern techno version of "Drive Me Wild" on a college radio program...
If he's disowning these sexually-explicit songs then why would he sweat the rights?

Trolleriffic, no doubt...

But Prince REALLY needs to either ease up his self-imposed verbal restrictions (I'm not saying he has to go back to cursing) or come up with some creative, heartfelt lyrics to replace them, so he can play some of these songs....

If Prince is not going to play these songs, why would he let others do them?

Besides, do we really want to hear just anyone covering these songs?

Wait a minute. Somebody straighten me out again....

I thought that Warner Brothers, as owners of the master tapes, controls someone broadcasting or sampling the original recordings of Prince's performances on those tapes.

But covering the song and performing/recording it youself would require clearance from the publisher or the songwriter?

If that's correct, then it would mean that Prince gave clearance for all those who have covered his songs, which seems a bit peculiar. My mind shrinks away in horror from the thought that Prince thought it would be a great idea for Brittney Spears and Lee Ann Rimes to cover Purple Rain. eek

So I'm thinking that the publishing company and the songwriter each get some sort of payment by the covering band, but don't have control over who makes a cover as long as they get their cut.

I need a legal eagle to help me out.....
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

I thought it was similar: If you're going to use a sample, say for a rap song, then you have to get clearance. But, there's nothing stopping someone from recording a cover of the song. It's just that royalties will be paid to the original songwriter per their publishing deal.

That sound right?

You're partially right. Anyone can cover anyone else's song, as long as they pay the statutory rate for the license to do so.

BUT, if the group or artist covering the song wants to change the arrangement of the song considerably, they need permission from the songwriter (i.e., the copyright holder of the song) - the songwriter has the power to veto the cover only in that situation.

And everytime a song is played on the radio, the songwriter(s) get a percentage of money. This includes cover songs, so whenever you hear a Prince song on the radio covered by someone else, Prince still gets a cut. He's the songwriter.

Warners has no say in who covers what. It has nothing to do with master recordings.

Interesting question. Still, I don't exactly wanna see Britney Spears cover "Purple Rain" or anything.

Once again, Larry wasn't even the one who introduced P to the JW religion. P first heard about it from George Benson and was intrigued. A few years later, when Larry and P started hanging out, Prince asked him for more info. All Larry did was answer the man's questions. Point is, Prince sought out the JW faith. Larry didn't come in and hypnotise him or something.

the funny thing about that is...prince never admitted to using profanity in that song. if he was really saying "'funk' until the dawn", he would have no problem performing that song.

Well fuck it right? This is his "journey".

It's a shame he won't perform it again, but maybe that's better. If he did, he'd butcher it.

I personally don't want to hear other people re-do P's stuff. Especially one of my all time favorites like 'Erotic City'. I just wish he'd do them and change the lyrics. It's his music though and who am I to criticize.
