Your "beating a dead horse" statement reminded me of something. Maybe you can work this into your doctoral thesis. It's an actual quote (all caps venom included) someone wrote on a bulletin board. You know, I look at it this way:
This whole "Hater vs. Fam" thing just seems to me like the creation of a bunch of people who get off on sports fan mentality of loyalty to one side with a particularly pleasurable disdain for the other side, simply for the sake of getting off on loyalty and conflict...no matter how pointless or arbitrary. It's the same kind of shitty mentality and energy that's making tons of money for muckrakers like Bill O'Reilley, Ann Coulter, Michael Moore and Al Franken - they're bi-partisan cheerleaders who know how to make the other side look like complete boogeymen, and people eat that kind of manipulation right up, not because of the meat of the facts, because it gives folks an opportunity to be on a "side" and to jeer the "enemy". Meanwhile, all kinds of interesting shades of grey are lurking in the fringe, completely ignored by this weird and stupid binary reality. Well, I say to hell with it. You want an either/or proposition? How about this: There are folks who look at Prince's music from the inside out. They wanna look at his music the way he does. There are folks who look at Prince's music from the outside in, and prefer to analyze his work as part of the bigger picture. Who's to say which perspective is right or wrong? I'd say I'm more "outside in", but I'd be lying if I didn't say I thought "inside out" is a good place to visit. I'm not interested in alienating myself from other people because of opposing views on music. Life's too short and anyway, I'm sure I can find far more worthy reasons to loathe folks than because of what damn Prince songs they like. So I don't know....like, whatever. | |
