It's not Ronnie Talk To Russia, and therefore it is not his best song ever. That was easy.

I know after the Jay Leno appearance I dissed the song but it didn't sound as strong a groove as the studio version..and sorry bout the cross post but:
I hadn't heard the studio version of the song until I finally five minutes ago got the link to work on the site to the video--I have heard the song a few times now and my opinion:
nuts
That song is HOT!
The guitar and drums at the forefront with that funk lick, the ending with the synthesized horns like early Time stuff. I'm sorry. I am being honest. I have heard THe Work comparisons (I've made some myself) and all that. I didn't really like The Work when it came out and it hasn't grown on me.
Musicology has a much better groove, the pitch in his voice is much cooler than the falsetto from The Work, and the guitar riff won't get outta your head when it's over. THis is going to be a huge hit. ANd knowing this is the opener on the album makes me feel so good!
THis is going to be a classic. It ain't Kiss. It ain't LItte Red Corvette. It ain't Purple Rain. It is Musicology.
Please believe.
I don't agree with the haters, but I still love you all.
As for Prince--my opinion of him stands worship

Not his best song ever though because there is no best Prince song ever. You Got The Look, Sister, Holy River those are just three examples of how ecclectic his sound is. Good luck ever finding that 'Best' song. It is futile.

this song is not his best....but it certainly isnt his worst.
i rate a song by how long it keeps hold of me for.The first time i heard it i was bored after about a minute.
Each time i hear it though i can appreciate something else in it.

its a good song but its not a great song.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

actually, in all seriousness you mean "in my opinion, its really one of his worst"

dude, you think slipknot rocks... for that alone you obviously have no taste in music...

i'm getting really sick of this board and its negativity...

all i know is that more people i know that havent grooved on prince in years are loving musicology when i play it for then, than any track i've played for them in a long time... maybe the old bitter people on here jsut dont know what they are talking about anymore and are out of touch.

Honestly, I think it's a good song. He's released much, much worse.

It's a good, funky song to relax and groove to, but it lacks more of a hook to make it great.

Personally, I thought The Work sucked, so I don't see the comparison between it and Musicology.

To me, it's more like a clean version of Sexy MF and Return of the Bump Squad combined.

not his best song ever, but it is a funky ass little song... i think i would like it better if my expectations hadn't been set so high with "the rainbow children" and "news"... it's the same way i felt when "parade" came out... i could appreciate it, but after "1999" - "around the world in a day", it just didn't hit me as immediately, but it grew on me...

that's what i'm expecting this to do...

and say what you will, yes, i do think that "news" and "the rainbow children" are some of the best work he's ever done... they are both very musically inspired... the most musically inspired that he has sounded since "gold experience"... and lyrically, i think that "the rainbow children" is equally as inspired... whether or not people agree with the lyrics, the fact is that it is obvious that prince cares about them and he sings them with more passion and conviction than anything he's done in quite some time...

but that said, i do think "musicology" is a jam... razz

this will be a song that is skipped whenever i play the album. hopefully the title track is not an indication of what we can expect on the album. i really liked what i heard of reflection, though.

I was definitely underwhelmed by the song when I first heard it live on Leno, but recently saw the video and heard the studio version, and I think it's really great. I'm not gonna pre-judge the whole album---gotta wait until the drive home from the movie theatre tomorrow before saying a thing!

I really really digMusicology. this song grows on me and keep playing in my head. I already know the lyrics by heart and believe it proves I really like it!!

It does me a lot of good because it sounds fresh organic, interesting and especially the drum beat on it.

Musicology simply enlightens my musical universe.
