I will say Milli Vanilli's first record, light dance stuff, and fun and funky, just exactly like Prince's music

Have you heard Afghan Whigs live at The Howlin Wolf in New Orleans? It was recorded on Thanksgiving and they do a few covers..Curtis Mayfiled etc..and they turn one song into Housequake for a few bars

Oh my, oh my.

yeah, i had it once, and lost it. sad it rocks. live, i've heard them cover hot thing, when doves cry, icntpoym, and purple rain. that greg dulli dude has sure got some soul for a white boy. there ain't nobody like him. i recommend them in their own right. the fact that greg dulli is constantly giving props to prince just shows that he knows what time it is.

thanks for the asking about it. it is quite rare and hard to find.

Beck - Midnight Vultures

Its funky, fun and a party all the way through.. many obvious prince influences (Wendy and Lisa also)

Great pick, along with Boris'.

I would choose: Stevie Wonder -- Talking Book. Not as "sprawling" as "Songs," but flawless. Like SOTT, the subject matter and mood of the LP veered somewhat, but Steview managed to keep the record accessible, adventurous and cohesive at the same time.

I would guess that a few tracks on this record informed Prince's music later on, including "Maybe Your Baby," which to me featured Stevie doing Camille before Camille.

Any of George Michael's solo stuff is prettty cool if you are already hip to Prince. They have some similar career paths. And George's new cd "Patience" is quite good.

Lost Souls by doves.

Its musically dense and transports you to another place.

I like how they mix real instruments with samples of real instruments and its hard to tell where the sounds stop, start and merge. It sounds like a beautiful mess. Its like listening to a rainbow in a puddle when diesel mixes with rainwater.

Its a fantastic album and I hear something different every time I listen to it. I'm pretty sure that they are Prince fans. One B-Side called 'Zither' borrows heavily from the instrumental version of 'An Honest Man'.

Their website is http://www.doves.net

p.s. My favourite Stevie Wonder album is Innervisions.

Tracy Chapman - "New Beginning"

it's as anti-Prince as u can get in terms of people perception of these two artists, yet so darn similar in approach to musicianship!

but a great album, nonetheless... enjoy!

It's a toss up between Terenc Trent D'arby's "Introduction to the Hardline" and Paul Simon's "Graceland." Terence because of the funkiness of the record and Simon because of the skill level of songwriting and lyric writing that went into the record. Yes, I do know that a lot of the songwriting actually goes to the people he recorded the record with

It's my favorite Jamiroquai album start to finish...but it more "electronic" in sound than previous albums. Travelling Without Moving is also good and is a bit more "organic" sounding. But there are songs I love on all Jamiroquai albums.

Stevie Wonder - Songs In The Key Of Life

Just cuz it's one of the best albums ever made. Sprawling like Sign O' The Times, with a great
mix of commercial and experimental tracks. Fantasic Songwriting and inspired musicianship.
Plus, if you haven't heard it before, you'll still recognise half the tracks on there cuz it's been
covered and sampled to death over the years. And if you still need convincing just listen to...
I Wish, As, Sir Duke, Love's In Need Of Love Today or Pastime Paradise
...I rest my case.

yeah that's my pick.

For those Prince fans that vibe to guitar, I have to point you to Stevie Ray Vaughn's Couldn't Stand the Weather. Why? SRV had a sound, a gift, an emotion and a pure talent that cuts right to your soul. You don't know whether to laugh with unmitigated joy, shaking yo' ass like a possessed fiend, or stand paralyzed with disbelief and reverence, certain that you are hearing a spirit and power far greater than the sum of its parts. Inspired.

For those of you that get off on lyrics and songwriting, try out Peter Gabriel, either Security or So (oh hell, get Peter Gabriel I, II or III or comb stacks of vinyl in hopes of finding Nursery Crimes or Foxtrot). Gabriel has the ability to paint pictures and moods, incorporates outside influences, but always sounds like himself.

And if you like the smooth, loverboy R&B groove type o' thang, my guilty pleasure would be Eric Benet's Day In The Life. boxed
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

I recommend anything that Gamble and Huff wrote and produced between 1968 and 1979. They had some wonderful work. Among them The O'Jay's Ship Ahoy, The Ebony's, MFSB, or Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes 1st album (which just got reissued). These albums are masterpieces. Gamble and Huff were way ahead of their time.
