Musicology is not funk Musicology...it's just a blues vamp that doesn't go anywhere.
It's not funk at all. I don't understand why everyone keeps calling it a funk song. I really hope there's more to the album than this...cuz this song is a snoozefest!

It's not funk at all. I don't understand why everyone keeps calling it a funk song. I really hope there's more to the album than this...cuz this song is a snoozefest! Just as sure as the sun ain't hot musicology is no funk! go back 2 books brotha! Funk is a many splendored thing. Funk is a nasty vibe, and a sweet sexy feeling Funk is funkiness, a natural release of the essence within. Funk is a high, but it is also down at the bottom, the low-down earthy essence, the bass elements. Funk is at the extremes of everything. Funk is hot, but funk can be cool. Funk is primitive, yet funk can be sophisticated. Funk is a way out, and a way in. Funk is all over the place. Funk is a means of release that cannot be denied... Village Voice writer Barry Walters explained The Funk as well as anyone could: "Trying to put that thang called funk into words is like trying to write down your orgasm. Both thrive in that gap in time when words fall away, leaving nothing but sensation." "Funk is like a mixture of soul, rhythm & blues, and jazz. Heavy on the bass and drums with scratchy guitar riffs and choppy keys mixed in. Top it off with a powerful vocalist that can shake you out of your shoes and you've described the artists that brought funk to the world in the late 60's and 70's. In the late 70's and early 80's, funk made it possible to dance without having to deal with the dreaded "disco" phase. Through that phase and many more, funk remains a staple in a well balanced musical diet. Gotta have that funk." (James Brown) naw, what kinda funk ya being hearin? damn!

In the words of the immortal George Clinton "Funk is on the one." And Musicology most definately is not. There's no drop...there's no power...theres no soul...no sweat...no feeling...its just meandering and bland. Not too unlike NEWS...it's musical wallpaper...kind of like a MUZAK version, or John Tesh version of funk. Prince is/was capable of so much better...

Sure... that must be why people have been saying it's a JB-influenced song. As we all know, James''s best known as a bluesman.
You don't have to like it, but to deny it's funk is lunacy. Just because funk and blues share components doesn't make Musicology a "blues vamp". I think you're arguing in purist terms because you don't like the song.

If it tastes like peanut butter, looks like peanut butter, and feels like
peanut butter....it's probably PEANUT BUTTER! In other words....FUNK makes me move, makes me groove, makes me bop my head without knowing i'm boppin', hear me? Musicology is FUNKY...true PEANUT BUTTER! Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

It's people like you who claim to have a veto on authenticity that keep trying to put musical genres in little boxes where they just have to be this way or that way to conform to your orthodoxy. Now, if you know anything about Prince, you know that's what Prince does - get out of the boxes. He's been confusing musical purists since the beginning and you haven't caught up. [This message was edited Sat Mar 27 10:34:01 2004 by Aerogram] "People like me"?? I did not mention anything about authenticity. It has nothing to do with purity. Prince has either lost the craft of songwriting, or simply refuses. It's ironic that the interviews that he does now he mentions about folks getting back into the craft of songwriting, when Musicology at least sounds like he put it together in about 30 minutes. Come up with one riff, and vamp on it for a few minutes and there's your song. He's still inspired to come up with music, obviously, but once that moment of inspiration allows you to create something, it's at that point that you craft a song out of it. I'm just dissapointed, because I know it's in him to do something more. Perhaps he's getting complacent in his older age....perhaps he's surrounded himself with too many yes-men...perhaps with no boundries, there's nothing to challenge him anymore. Either way, I won't be looking forward to this release as much as ones in the past, and sadly that is becoming an increasing trend with me. But ...whatever peanut butters your bread....like Frank Zappa once said...if one person likes a song, it's not crap. If you dig it...great...enjoy it. But I still contend that it's not funk....by a long shot.

But I still contend that it's not funk....by a long shot. I'm sorry to break it to you, but you are most certainly concerned with authenticity, otherwise you wouldn't be stating it's not funk. You ARE saying it's not authentically funk. Then again you go on to say it's lite or tofu funk, which is again a statement about the lack of authenticity of the song (not the real thing, eh?) besides being a contradiction -- it's not funk but it's lite funk, etc. It doesn't faze me as I think the quest for authenticity is one of music's most paralyzing trends. There are people who don't listen to any funk made after 1978 like there are people who are preoccupied with sounding as close to the greats as possible, never taking any chance taste-wise. They are Slaves of Good Taste, and that's why Norah Jones is at the top of the charts. Ironically, Prince is also heavily referring to the greats and mourning more creative times, but then again what he does with Musicology is missing from black/urban radio while you can hear classic elements in the sound of every white band. Do I think Musicology is a "brand new bag"? Not in the least, but we're comparing a new song to classic grooves we've heard hundreds of times over years. It's a good song and a solid groove, and it IS funk. You are only the latest in a long line of people who have been saying that what Prince does is not "true" funk, rock, jazz and whatnot. It's been going on for decades.
